Who is on Facebook?

Hello everyone,

I don't post on here much anymore, so many people have lost newsgroups, a
lot of the old members are not around here anymore.

Are many of you on Facebook? I have been posting my works on there for
friends and family to see.

Here is some of my recent work,

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150090131757741.276400.729937740&l=0a1982f890

If you are on Facebook and I "know" you, add me.

David Eisan - London, Ontario

Take care,

David.

The BeeGees were not just disco. One of my favorites was "I've Gotta Get
a Message to You", sung by Maurice Gibbs.
Also ' Massachusetts', and many others.
Go to You Tube and search BeeGees.

Sorry - though a woodgrain background may appeal to a woodworking group -
the overall presentation of this site... well it sucks. It takes way too
much effor to try to read the author's intent. Might pay to investigate the
conceepts of building a good web site..

I remember you, your name and your face. Saw you working a booth at the
Toronto Woodworking Show several years back just before it changed to the
fall DIY and Great Outdoors Show. It was about that time you mostly stopped
posting to the Rec.

Went to look for the message I replied to, but couldn't find it
immediately and got sidetracked ... I figured as much.

I made the switch from WLM to TB when Vista came out ... took a while to
get used to, but TB is SOOOO much better than Windows Lame Mail,
although I still miss a few of my favorite OE shortcuts, like CTRL H,
which marked everything read, even threaded messages.

We have an account but it isn't "mine".

I participated in our high school's scholarship selection process this
year. The school Principal warned some of the candidates about
Facebook content. School administrators, counselors, grad school
selection teams and employers are finding way to get access to
Facebook material. Postings about last night's party, a hangover,
drinking, or a conquest are ending up is student files; and in
selection processes. A few months ago I watched an old co-worker get
himself laid off because of less than discreet Facebook comments.

Yeah, I know there will be a rash of comments regarding privacy,
lawsuits, etc. But at the end of the day, when you put it on the
internet, it is on the internet.

I had the biggest damn belly laugh when i read that I almost fell out
of my chair. I can just SEE and HEAR you saying that.

All that was missing was a big **sigh** after that update.

All I would change to make that my profile is "seem to be tired a lot

I can't remember the exact phrase that Keith Bohn used to

or a biblical reference to "smote with a vengance"

He always had some really sharp one liners.....

When I first got on the internet through my telephone company when they
first started internet access way back when (1985?), I didn't know I
could pick a username of my choice.
The person at the telco told me my username would be 'willshak'. She
never asked if I had a different choice of username. The first part,
'will', is correct. My first name is William. The second part, 'shak',.
is close to the first characters in my last name, but not exact.
I found out later that willshak is a nickname, used on the web, for
William Shakespeare.
I took advantage of that with my sig line, that told how to decipher my
real email address, which was 'out spammed dot', a takeoff on
Shakespeare's Lady MacBeth's "out damned spot" in "MacBeth", Act 5.

Oh? First thing I see when I go there is a request for my name, email,

that. And yeah, I know I could fake it, but there ought to be a way to
peruse the site to check it out without entering any personal info.

Your name, and email are being posted here, what is the difference.
The birthday is a legal requirement for letting young kids get on line,

Well, the email addy is a spam catcher, I look at it now and then. I
take your point, but I started using my real name on Usenet a long time
before it became popular and didn't see much sense in changing after
that. But lots of posters never use their real name anywhere.

How did you know to shake the yellow striped green wire? If you shook

How CAN you forget lyrics as classy as these:

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk,
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk.
Music loud and women warm.
I've been kicked around since I was born.
And now it's all right, it's O.K.
And you may look the other way.
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man.
Whether you're a brother
Or whether you're a mother,
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Feel the city breakin'
And ev'rybody shakin'
And we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha,
Stayin' alive.
Stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha,
Stayin' alive.
.
.
.
Now TRY to get that song out of your head.

I agree that no privacy issues are required, but for me, it's more the lack
of discretion in private matters that I shy away from. Sure - that's not a
FB thing - it's more of a social statement, but I elect not to be part of
that.

I don't use Twitter because I haven't been able to figure out how it
could actually benefit what I do.

Broadcasting "I'm now sanding your cabinets/table/what-have-you to
150grit" doesn't seem to have any profit or time saving potential, at
least as far as I've been able to determine. If I saw that it could, I
wouldn't hesitate.

I do see the benefit to those in the media, blogosphere, etc ...
everything else is like Mike says.

Although there are plenty of folks in the category, you have to be pretty
damn dumb to allow technology to wag the dog.

You bet, Bubba ... I use technology, it doesn't use me. He says, as he sits
on a construction site, waiting for a plumbing inspector to show, while
posting on the wRec using an iPad2 ... IOW, eatcherheartout! :)

Actually, I was an early adopter of FB to keep up with my daughter in the
UK and my grandsons, and my youngest in college. My youngest daughter is
visiting in the UK now and we have been part of the entire experience
through both FB and Skype. Basically, it's as close to being there as you

Turns out I may be making a business trip to Houston in the next month or
two. Will have to get together for a cold one. I want to hook up with Leon
too - I want to steal one of those F tools he's always talking about - just
to see if they're really that good, of course. Not gonna let that Robert
get away without shaming him into making the trip for a beer as well.

Your newsreader probably snipped it as part of the previous person's
signature. My newsreader considers everything under "-- " to be a
signature.

...yeah, but the way they got it set up you really can't do that. I've
got 3 email accounts and maybe 8 NG's way at the bottom of the page. If
you write an email, that's what it is...same for the groups.

He's running Windows Live Mail, which is not derived from Outlook
Express. OE-Quotefix works with OE and Windows Mail but not Windows
LIVE Mail, which is the only newsreader that Microsoft makes available
for Windows 7.

Usually you mark read instead of deleting.

If you just plain don't want to see the message, run a Hamster
<http://www.arcorhome.de/newshamster/tgl/misc/hamster_en.html> and use
it for filtering.

I must be doing something wrong, It seems I had the problem when I tried
Thunderbird out in the past.

The best I can get is an error saying that I did not create the message
therefore I cannot delete it, when I "run rules on messages".

You're not doing anything wrong, and it's right, you can't delete someone
else's post on usenet.

I'm onsite and on an iPad so can't look at the TB menu, but the problem is
in the action you are taking after identifying a message ... Check for
other actions besides "delete the message" including ignore or mark as read
.... It should be intuitive what action to take.

I went from using OE as a newsreader to "SeaMonkey" , a spin-off of
Thunderbird after I started using Windows7. It works fine--especially
considering its free.

It appears that you then have to "Run Filters" when you download new
messages. Is there a way to configure it so that the filters run
automatically? I am using SeaMonkey, derived from Thunderbird, so its
conceivable that SeaMonkey will be different (but I doubt it).

You can set each filter to run on download or manually, or both.

Or, when reading a message, right click on the senders name, click on
'create filter from' in the pop up window...

Here are two descriptions/reviews of the free QuoteFix program
for OE which I originally posted a link page on. If you try it and
it fails your problem, it can be uninstalled.

Yeah you do Lew - how else are you going to talk loudly in front of people
you don't know, in places where you should not be talking loudly, about
things nobody really cares to hear, so that all those people around you
realize that you're important? Truthfully, one of my favorite observations
is that time when you are getting off an airplane - you just taxi'd to the
gate, and watch the number of women who get on their phone to call the
people who are waiting for them at the security gate - to tell them that
they are at the gate. Sheese! I'm a big time cell phone guy but how in the
hell did these people survive that 4 minutes from exiting at the gate, to
the security point before cell phones?

Lew - you just gotta get one...

immediately after trying to call, and they immediately reply. Go figure.

And that's how I know that I'm really getting old. I understand the
technology just fine. I grew up in technology, was one of the early guys in
the world of UNIX, and had my hands on the original DARPANET - before Al
Gore invented the internet. So - I'm no techno-phobe, but... and it's a big
butt... Twitter - what the hell is that all about? The social media of
today just strikes me as too open - too much information shared and/or
forced upon "friends" that just does not need to be "shared". Too many
people blabbering about too many meaningless and insignificant things - that
they just must share with everyone. What do I really care that someone I
know had gas today and blew a big fart? Hell, if that were really
newsworthy, I'd be a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter!

There is a reason I'm a sailor.

You very quickly realize your priorities if you want to stay alive.

My ultimate goal in simplifying my life is when my key ring is down to
one key, the boat key.

Some how, an electronic nurse maid (AKA: Cell phone) doesn't fit into
that game plan.

Again, I share the broad view.
However, no "live time" updates and no "friends"
is how I advise all close to me. So far most have
adhered to the advice.

How long it all lasts who knows.
It has all been done before, the protocols used are
not a mystery.. to many.
However it is not the White, Red or even Black hats
one need worry too much about, you wont stop
them noway. It is the "fskd in the head" types
like Josepi/Mho - types that will start an account
in your name and proceed to invite every known
(to them) deviate along. When the pool is full they
ring the Constabulary. You end up answering a lot
of questions you know nothing about - as in why
they are asking. Its been done, "networking" they
say.
Where the networking starts is in tracking across
mediums. You haven't said who you are on FB, I
haven't said who I am on Skype.
The OP has told the freaking world who he is!!
FB is packed with dickheads of the same degree
of naivety.
A sociopath's picnic!

Tagging my comment to yours, SM... as I read
you and you prove to be an "ok kinda fella".

... and to ask if you did anything with that pattern I
built and if so was it workable?

One of the funnier lines in the movie version of The Flintstones (John
Goodman, Rick Moranis, Nicole Kidman, FB O'Donnell, Elizabeth Taylor)
was when Goodman said: "My father lived to the ripe old age of 34."
Clarke would likely take exception to that joke as well.

Come to think of it, that was actually a pretty good movie, B-52 doing
the theme song..yup, was kinda fun.

And THAT reminds of the time I gave the keynote speech at the wedding
of a Navy buddy in Halifax Nova Scotia. As he was one of the members
of HOG, the party was very well populated by bikers (there were 70+
HOGs in the procession). As the night wore on, I slipped a quickly
assembled CD into the player and the opening cut was The Flintstones
by The B-52's. The place went nuts! Lots of fun. Then Flowers On The
Wall by Eric Heatherly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DM9f7uhZcbfQ)
really got the place rocking.
One of the bikers, named 'Tiny" (400+lbs) said: "You're a crazy son of
a bitch, you know that!?" and proceeded to damn near break my back in
a bear hug.
Fun times.
Fun times.
I think Tiny liked me. *blush*

Don't look now, but the fact that the average caveman scratched fleas
around an open fire, lost his teeth at 15, and lived to the ripe old age
of 21, BLOWS your "technology seems to breed ignorance" contention
completely out of the water, there Bill!

IOW, if the advancements in quality of life and the increase in healthy

Note by the way that the average cave man did not "lose his teeth at
15" or "live to the ripe old age of 21". If he made it to 20 he usually
made it into his 50s or 60s. People equate "average life expectancy"
with "average age at death" and it doesn't work that way. As for teeth,
the incidence of tooth decay in the paleolithic was about 1 percent--
most of those 50 year old cave men died with their teeth intact.

The actual "increase in healthy life span" hasn't been that great. The
big improvements have come at the other end, with major reductions in
childhood and infant mortality. A modern adult is not likely to live
all that much longer than a cave man but a much higher percentage of
infants make it to adulthood.

You maybe right, I feel really healthy.

Except for the repetitive stress syndrome.
The 75lbs I put on while snacking on junk food when I'm playing games four
hours a day on the computer
The dozen mostly empty fast food cartons littered everywhere around my
computer, composting where they sit.
The pile of laundry that needs cleaning but I couldn't be bothered since I
don't need clean clothes to use my computer.

So, in actuality I exercise my fingers and right arm frequently, I'm
contributing to the economy by keeping the fast food companies operating,
I'm keeping delivery boys working and I'm recycling garbage by composting.
Finally, I'm saving energy by not doing the laundry and saving the
environment by not dumping my used phosphate detergents down the drain.

Yup, technology has made me really healthy and a regular contributor to the
living well magazine.

Amen. My niece is in the far flung lands of the Northeast Provinces
in school, and she rarely even checks her email. Forget voice mail.
Ain't happenin'. No text, no communication with that young lady.

Too pass=E9. It is "like really old school". They identify email and
voicemail as an ancient artifact left by ancestors unknown to them.
(She is 22, by the way)

I won't text now, and have it turned off on my phone. I don't like
the interruptions during my day, and I have found that I cannot
respond in a timely manner. I won't listen to any whiney crap about
how "I texted you an hour ago, *sniff* *sniff* and you never
responded".

What I am really worried about besides the constant and incessant
interruptions, is the fact that it could become part of my business.
I have a life sized picture of a $5000 load of roofing material ($125
delivery fee, 15% restock once the truck leaves the yard) and my
roofing sub (guaranteed 1/2 day by me win/lose/draw) with 4 - 5 guys
in the truck en route to the job and suddenly getting a text saying
they needed to put off the install because their son scraped his knee
and they were at the doctor late in the previous evening.

Or I am at Sherwin Williams having my paint order filled of custom
colors and I get a text saying "Scratch paint colors; SO has new
ideas! HMU ltr." Of course I would miss that text, and not only
waste my time getting the paint, buying non refundable colors, but not
get paid for either one.

I don't want a weasel text sent to me at 4:00am by one of my subs
telling me he won't be on the job for some reason, real or imagined.

I have found that when my clients and associates are properly handled
in an immediate, voice driven manner, things go smoothly for me. If I
had only one job at a time, texting might work. But I either have 5
or none, or 2 and I am negotiating as many as possible at the same
time.

I have found the new pidgin enormously unhelpful with my style of
communication and won't tolerate that silliness from my clients or
colleagues.

My voice message: Mr. Smith, this is Robert. I have your door color
samples on your front porch as we speak, and would like a call back
from you letting me know what you and your wife decide. Please call
me back on my cell phone at XXX-XXXX. Thanks -

Return text: Tks 4 smple. Jst fin l8 lnch, hm l8r. HUB here thn.
Tks -

Me: WTF was that?

I expect the same level of professional treatment ( I know, what an
arrogant ass) from my clients that I give them. I don't write
contracts or communications with my clients in all the nonsense, and
won't take it from them when we are negotiating or under contract.

And professional reciprocation doesn't include getting texts at all
hours of the day and night because it was completely convenient for
them at the moment they thought about it. In these difficult economic
times I answer the phone no matter when I am called by current
clients, or someone that simply can't get to a phne during the day.
But for the rest of the world, I have to keep it to 8-6pm. I don't
like getting phone calls from bored husbands on Saturday wondering if
I can come out on Sunday to look at their project. Texting would make
that waaaay to easy.

Here's the no-texting bonus for me. NEVER have I had a <guy> tell me
they preferred to text me. In fact, when I give my clients my cell
number, they tell me they *prefer* talking to me personally, live in
person. Occasionally there is an irritated soccer Mom or other
important female that doesn't have the time for a voice chat (but
endless time to text all day), but even then, most folks seem to
prefer voice.

I know one day I will have to join the relentless marauding horde, but
not one day sooner than I need to for me.

Robert

I'm thinking that a circle of friends, satisfied clients and their
friends, etc. can add up to a lot exposure for self employed folks like
dog groomers and house painters.

Just another cog in the business machine ...

Although I've been too busy lately to try doing anything along that
line, I do know Linda has just recently started using FB and Youtube to
get the word out about past and upcoming concerts, and what her kids and
teachers are doing in the studio, etc:

According to her, it is something the parents love to see and

Linda doesn't miss a trick at promoting her endeavors (none of which I
have absolutely anything to do with)

It's a method of making yourself so dumb that you walk into telephone

Good for you. I have never even texted (and have no regrets so far). I
Have been reading a couple books, on pdf, written between 1903 and
1907--go figure. I'm beginning to get a handle on figuring this stuff
out: Civilization (technological progress to the n^(th) degree) seems to
be unraveling humanity--at least in the US of A. I'm sure that my
statement can be reasonably be attacked or defended, but I find it an
interesting notion and note examples in my day-to-day life.

Old people have been saying that about every technological advance in
the history of civilization. I'm sure there were old cavemen who said
fire and the wheel would make everyone lazy.

And how many people in your family could start a fire without a pack or

Technology seems to breed ignorance--especially such as the "assembly
line"--which devoured the tradesmen whose "lost" skills are coveted by
many of us. Just sayin'.

I understand what you're saying and it's always a good discussion to have.

But there are many lost skills that are simply unneeded anymore, due to
technological advances. Just being lost doesn't add any inherent value
to the skill. All those hand tools that Roy guy on PBS uses are fun and
I'm sure it gives one a sense of accomplishment, but so does mowing the
lawn and I'm sure as heck not going to do it with one of those push mowers.

And if I'm ignorant because I'll use a combination of table saw, band
saw, router, jointer, etc, to make table legs instead of a spokeshave a
draw knife, then I'll revel in my bliss all the live long day.

I couldn't remember how to thread a movie projector if my life depended
on it and it used to be part of what I did for a living. In my lifetime
the keyboard I'm typing on will be obsolete and it won't make stupid
people any more stupid or help anyone be smarter.

I'm ignorant to a whole heap of things that are completely irrelevant.

You are right. But I like the way you put that ("puppies")! : )

BTW, not too long ago a new driver in my family tree texted his way into
an auto accident/totaled car, running into a stopped car in front of
him... Careful out there.

I'm pretty active on FB because in my line of bidnis, everyone seems to
be on there blabbin away. It's a decent way to network and stay on the
radar.

I would love if this newsgroup went to a FB group. It's great to see
those pics you post of woodworking and be able to interact on the same
page, etc.

Yeah Buddy! ... Of the three hundred FB "friends" at least +/- 250 are
musicians I know from 40 years of playing and recording. Great way to keep

I had a cell phone for a while. No one but my family knew the number.
The only calls I made or received, were of the following types:
Calls:
1. 'I am going to town to get xxxxx, do you need anything"?
2. "I am in (some store), they don't have the brand you wanted, should I
get the xxxxx brand"?
Received:
1. "While you are at XXXXXX, will you pick up some xxxxx"?
2. "Where are you? I need you to pick up xxxxx".
I no longer have a cell phone.

All so true, I don't even like having a cell phone, but it is a company
phone and I am on emergency call everyday all day.

I am increasingly getting request for texting by clients of my dog
business, I decline. They have my numbers they can call or email.

Some buyers are very efficient, 1 email for pictures, 1 email to
arrange payment, one phone call by me to arrange shipping,
deal done. Others require as much as 1/2 dozen phone calls and
20 emails, I can't imagine having such a person empowered with
texting, there aren't enough hours in the day.

Please delineate your sig line by typing two dashes, then a space, and
then the Enter key to put the sig on the next line. This will gray it
out so I doesn't look like part of the message. It looks like you tried
but forgot the space after the dashes.

Tried it. Didn't like it. Can't cancel it. Best I could do was
unfriend all my "friends" and inactivate my account. But the account

What's a "home telephone"?? ;)

I'm with David, while there are a few here on FB, would be nice to see more.

It's like any other tool, social or otherwise ... the "friends" on FB
are folks I've worked and played with in the music world, or
increasingly, woodworking folks I've met here. The common denominator is
sharing a common interest.

One of the advantages of FB is that it adds another dimension to those
folks who post on the wRec that you would really like to know in person,
but due to distance, find that a remote possibility. Also a great way to
keep up with remote family and grand kids.

Oh man - not at all! The Bee Gees long preceeded the disco era. They put
out some great music in the late 60's and early 70's. That was the Bee Gees
as far as I'm concerned - not the crap they put out in the Disco era.

Nah - disco didn't kill live bands. Ya can't kill live rock-n-roll.

Reminds me of when we used to use old CD's for targets ... We had to quit
using them because, throwing them in the air, we invariably shot through
the hole in the middle, making it impossible to tell what good shots we

I am getting to a point where Facebook is starting to bore me.
All the fun and informative interactions happen on other channels,
such as my regular e-mail and my gmail accounts. The back'n forth
banter in here is far more interesting than Facebook.
And YOUR mileage may vary.

I was a former member of a usenet/computer group that got overrun by
trolls, now we have a private invite-only group on FB with about eight
people trusted to be admins (read original members). 38 members on the
group now, and a very lively community, more fun. on topic, no trolls etc.

The invite-only being the key, Karl if there is an interest, I can help
you set it up, it took about a year to get to the point it is, first
members have to friend a member, and then invited. There is a document
on the page that links FB names to usenet names if people get confuzed, etc.

We are quite happy with it.

A plus is that it tends to add civility to the general discourse ... I feel
like the guys here who are also on FB are indeed "friends", we "know" each
others wives, children, siblings, pets and, as much as mutually allowed,
their interaction with same ... last thing you want to do is to get into a
pissing contest with a friend here, or anywhere else.

I agree that it certainly expands the interaction, in some ways even
more so than a phone. UseNet is pretty darn shallow unless you bump
into folks who one is more familiar with through FaceBook.

I am on the fence a bit as to what extent I am willing to go with it.
My friends have most pertinent info on me already anyway, but not all
know my shoe size. I like to see the faces of those I interact with,
am always curious about their families, pets, hobbies, what they see
when they look out their kitchen window.

My youngest's BFF just came home from an Italian student exchange
after 3 months. As if she never left. My daughter threw a party for
her in our back yard, and at one point, when the bonfire was low, I
looked down from the deck, on that crowd of about 30, and saw at least
20+ little lit-up screens.... they were all together and STILL texting
each other...<G>

Never could figure out what the big deal was with the Bee Gee's? I always
hated them just for their name not to mention it was DISCO! Disco destroyed
the live band era. But it did advance Blue Grass and Country Rock for those
that enjoyed and appreciated the "Live" sound.

Theeeeeeeuuuu Dick Van Dyke SHOW!!!!!

and
I
wil
raise you

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

Not sure really.

I opened the computer and located the yellow striped green wire running
from the power supply to the SD C: drive. I wiggled it and then looked
around for a while.

Then I installed Thunderbird.

One of those actions fixed it.

I'm thinking I've got "the lady who doth protest too much" blocked already
because I received this response but not the protesting one. ...Signs of a
cronic troll or complainer.

I find just the oppisite, but probably have different uses..
If I post to ABPW at all, it's a link to a FB album..
Seems like most of my friends and family are on FB and "Instant
Messages" have replaced a lot of what I used to do with email..
If I send a friend an IM, they're also notified by email, so it's
twice the chance of getting a quick reply..

Not wood related, but in the last 18 months we've doubled the
attendence of our karaoke gig and the only change has been using
Facebook..

Toy is truly demented, isn't it? It's probably the banana fumes.
And if he's listening to the BeeGees, it's not hard to wonder what
he's doing with all those bananas...

Should I be upset that a karaokeer hates me,
or is that A Good Thing(tm)? How do you feel, Toy?

P.S: I don't like children or Christmas carolers singing off-key,
either.

"Privacy" issues in this realm are largely imaginary, amplified by the
hearsay of those with a basic misunderstanding of the issues and
resulting in playing on each others irrational fears.

However, I do agree with you ... some folks should never be allowed near
a computer in the first place.

Karaoke/rap make me miss disco, and I _hated_ disco.

Isn't "What A girl Wants" a Christina Aquilera song?
