Which compressor to buy.

Looking for feed back.
I'm replaceing my old worn out 2HP CH compressor.
I want one of the 60 gallon 3+HP upright models. I've narrowed it down to
two models. Ingersol Rand model SS3L3 or Porter Cable C7510. Both meet my
needs (both car repair (just my cars and my kids) and woodworking (personal
non commercial home shop use). Sand blasting, spray painting and airtools,
on a very casual basis). My 2HP CH compressor lasted 20 years, so not a
lot of use. I can't decide which one is better, the price is the same for
both. I like the "V" configuration of the PC model pump, as opposed to the
in-line config of the IR model, plus the IR pump looks "small" compared to
the more "Robust" PC. Of course IR is a respected well known name in
compressors, and PC is well know in power tools, well at least before they
were bought out,(although not sure about compressors). Both packages have
made in USA on them (or should I say "not made in China"), The motor tags
say made in Mexico, didn't know that the US absorbed that country! Same
Emerson motors (almost) and pretty much the same air flow and electrical
specs. The IR pump actually has "made in US" cast into it.
So is the "V" config a better choice (cooling, noise, efficiency, etc.) or
is the inline cylinder pump from IR a better choice. The PC pump has no
indication as to where it is made.
And OBTW, is there actually somebody making compressors in the US these
days. I thought all tool making moved offshore.

Thanks in advance, Ray

You just detailed some pretty heavy air consumption. Sandblasters are very
demanding of a compressor and the cheap siphon units are almost useless for
any amount of sandblasting. Spray painting can take a fair amount of air,
especially if you're using today's HVLP guns. They require more SCFM than
most people think. Your better approach is to shop around and look at the
various air tools you think you'll be buying - or that you currently own.
Look at the air consumption of these tools and then base your compressor
purchase decision on these demands.

Which unit is rated for continuous duty, get that one. If neither or both
the IR would be my choice.

I'll just focus on the sandblasting part as I have some recent
experience with that. 5HP won't cut it either. A real 10 HP with an 60
- 80 gallon tank is barely adequate for sign blasting in 1-1/2" cedar.
I know this because there are two local sign makers who have come to
me to hog out the bulk of their signs with my CNC so their job will be
so much easier.
I suppose you 'can' blast with less, but most jobs get tiring right
quick.
Having said that, one of the nicer car-paint jobs I have seen was all
done with a 2 HP and 60 gallon tank. This guy had the timing down like
Buddy Rich. (or Steve Gadd) (Oh... and that was a REAL 2 HP.)

The IR claims 100 % duty cycle. The PC doesn't give a claim for duty
cycle. I may have over stated the use of the compressor. Yes I do sand
blasting, but not much, and only small articles. Biggest thing I've ever
done was a 35 Chevy gas tank, and it only needed a partial blasting.
I've painted one car (a Gremlin) and my 2HP 20gal compressor did that
just fine with a DeVilbiss pro gun. All my air tools seem to do what is
asked of them with the 2HP compressor. BTW, thats 2HP as printed on the
compressor tank. I at no time in the past thought I need a larger
compressor or more air, all though when I spray painted my sun deck, the
compressor ran continuesly.
I'm only stepping up because the old one died, and I'm trying to save
real-estate and maybe getting a bit more air. 20 years isn't bad, IMO,
for a compressor (It was left in auto mode and powered all the time even
though I may not have used it for several months at a time, it would
cycle frequently). Looks like IR is winning out, with 100% duty cycle.
Thanks again for the comments.

The above tasks consume a lot of air.

If you are serious about doing them, 3HP is just too small unless you
want to stand around and wait while the compressor catches up.

A 5HP, 2 stage compressor with an 80 gallon tank is more in line with
the above jobs.

Can offer no help concerning the units you are looking at other than a
60 gallon tank is GOOD.

For sandblasting, you need a five HP compressor. (as in, five real HP,
at least 24 amp 230v motor).

My own compressor is 58 years old.

My choice was a IR SS3L3, but it's still on it's shipping pallet, so can't
say IF I made the right choice yet.

i got the ir about 5 years ago. i use it for sandblasting glass using a
pressure pot. it's continuous duty. works like a champ. not very quiet,
though lots quieter than a small non-oilless HF that it replaced.

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_158284_158284

inspect when you get it. it's drop shipped from ir to you directly. the
first one delivered was broken and i never took it off the truck.
