I think I like the tung oil suggestion too. I would read up a bit more
on various penetrating oils and their suitability for sitting on (You
don't want something that will stain clothes). I do not think I would
use a varnish, poly or what ever. Can you sit on penofin?

What I would do, especially if they will be sitting on the lawn, is
protect the bottom of the legs. Either fashion some type of copper boot
or at least seal the bottom of the leg (end grain) with something tough.

It's up to you. Something like tung oil will keep them looking nice
for a while longer, but you'll eventually have to refinish them to look
nice, since they'll likely look patchy over time, rather than age uniformly.
Refinishing isn't a big deal though.
