Tung Oil Finish vs. Poly For Pine Hanging Above Kitchen Stove

I plan to put the finish on the pot rack this weekend:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeON_DhAwpY/VPOSstcXihI/AAAAAAAAFyU/5Q-wMvqCAgo/s1600/farm1.jpg

It's made from 5/4 clear pine and will have a fairly light Minwax
oil-based stain applied. (something like Minwax Ipswich)

I have a can of Minwax Tung Oil Finish in the shop and I'm wondering
if that will be an OK finish to use over the stain or should I go buy
some poly?

The pot rack will be hung above the kitchen stove, so it's going to
be subject to some amount of steam, maybe some grease fumes, etc. I'm
sure it will require some cleaning every now and then.

If poly is the better idea, is Wipe-On poly OK or should it be brushed
on? (I have a little Wipe-On left, but not enough to do the entire rack)

I'm sure there are other options available, but I don't enough finishing
to need to buy something "exotic". In fact the Tung Oil Finish is left
over from a 2007 project, so that shows you how much I use it. ;-)

Hmmm...Is a ~10 YO can of Tung Oil Finish still good?

Thanks for any advice.

Their web site lists 4 dealers near me. I'll check it out.

Thanks.

I would never use Tung oil above the stove.
Tung never fully dries and will attract every dust nub around.
While above the stove would normally be greasy why add to the issue.

Tung is just an ok finish.. I would go with Shellac first choice, poly
second choice.

Well, there's your answer right there. Pay careful attention to the "to eq=
ual 2-3 BRUSHED on coats" part.

Two more thoughts. Throw 10 year old finish away. Tung oil isn't really t=
ung oil in most cases, but most likely a chemically treated oil combinatio=
n of different polymerized oils (probably a little tung) and chemical drier=
s. 100% tung oil only products can last for years, but there is a lot of d=
ebate on actual shelf life.

As far as "tung" oil itself, it adds nothing to the finish except to muddy =
the grain and a bare minimum of utility value. It abrasion resistance leve=
ls are poor, it can be water resistant with many, many coats meticulously a=
pplied, it will not resolvate well when additional coats are applied and it=
has little resistance to soaps and detergents when cleaned.

That tiny little rack could be easily brushed out with poly in a few minute=
s, and you could get a three coat build in two days.

See Karl's note on conditioning before staining.

Their spec sheet seems to indicate professional use/spray only. Can it be brushed
on by a DIYer?

See if you can find an ML Campbell dealer near you and if so see if they
have Magnamax in stock. I tried it based on a test in Fine Woodworking
ages ago and found it to be amazingly good. Nice finish, dries fast,
and all kinds of stuff just wipes off.

Yep, it brushes nicely. Go for the matte or eggshell, not the gloss--
the gloss isn't forgiving at all.

If the pot rack is going where I think it is, it won't matter. In six
months you'll be taking it down.

Yes, but I still don't like the stain...maybe it's the color. I'll test
some more options.

SWMBO said so.

Actually, she picked out the stain but hasn't seen it applied yet. I
did some scraps late last night and let them dry for various times before
wiping (5, 10, 15 mins).

I don't like the way any of them they look, but I want to put some Tung
and/or poly over the stain and also Tung and/or poly standalone before I
show it to her. Hopefully she will forgo the stain.

On the other hand, as long as she keeps cooking, I'll put purple stripes
and orange polka dots on it if she wants me to. :-)

If it wasn't for the smoke/grease/etc. oil would be fine; in your case, I
would definitely use poly varnish. OIL poly varnish. Wiping would be fine
as long as you wipe enough coats to equal 2-3 brushed on coats.

If your can of Minwax "Tung" Oil finish is still liquid it is fine. Be
aware that there is precious little tung oil in it...it is mostly BLO. BLO
cures MUCH darker than tung oil; how dark depends upon how much is actually
on/in the wood and that depends largely upon how well it was sanded.

Why do you want to stain it? Pine will darken considerably with either the
Minwax oil or poly; staining introduces a problem if you ever need to sand
to repair the finish.

TLDR ... Did you use a conditioner on the pine before staining?

IME with pine, sure helps.
