"A straight 2"x4" clamped to the plywood can serve as an edge guide."

Where does one find such a beast? The guy at the BORG said that straight

Try shopping for wood at a real lumber place.

MDF comes quite straight on factory edges.

I tried this after reading it somewhere, and I like it a lot: rip off
a strip of MDF 3" or so wide. Cut some 1/4" plywood 12" wide. Nail and
glue the strip onto the plywood, face-to-face, with one set of edges
coplanar. Do this so that the factory edge from the MDF is on the
inside of the newly fabricated guide.

Then, using the MDF as a guide, rip the plywood with your circular
saw. Make sure the wide side of your saw shoe is against the MDF, not
the narrow side. When you're done, you have a saw guid thate allows
you to cut without measuring to offset for the saw shoe. Just mark
your work, and clamp the guide down so the edge of the plywood is on
the cut line. The blade will go right there.

Well . . . right. But if you want really straight circular saw cuts get one
of the aluminum cutting guides on the market (you can joint the 2x4 to get a
straight edge but it probably won't be straight for long). Take care setting
up and running the saw and you'll be amazed how straight you can get it.
