I picked up a cheap 2lb dead-blow rubber hammer from Princess Auto
(Our Kanuckistani equivalent to Harbor Freight) and left it in the van
for a day. When opening the door, the whole van just reeked of some
off-gassed rubber. I then noticed that a rubber air-hose had the same
strong smell. Also made in China. (The GoodYear hose doesn't smell
like that)
To top it off, my kid bought a volley-ball set and the ball was also
stinking to high heaven....to the point we had to leave it outside...
it made us nauseous.
Next thing I know, I'm back in Princess Auto for something and the
whole store smells like that.
What kind of sub-standard crap is stinking like that? Are they're not
bothering to cure it properly or is it just bad rubber to begin with?
I mean, I openend a tool-case with a cordless drill in it, and the
handle had a rubber over-mold, it darn near knocked me on my ass.
Phewww.
I think I justabout had it with that Chinese crap.

I tell ya... I bought a few sinks from a Chinese distributor a few
years ago, and I swear that it took weeks to get the stench out of my
shop. The cardboard was just disgusting and the slab of pressed wood-
fibre which was in the box to protect the sink, must have been made
from pressed dog-shit and fish bones.... held together by a mixture of
mung and panda vomit. The excrement of that fibre-board got into my
fingers..and even after I washed my hands several times, every time I
picked my nose....wait...I said too much....

You mean that scent in the Beijing Hilton? That would be piped in pot-
pouri.
If Chinese markets ( and I have visited many in other major cities on
the planet) are any indication, I'd have to side with Swing on that
one... that cheap rubber smell ain't so bad in comparison.
Funny thing is, I absolutely love authentic chinese cuisine. Schezuan
in particular.

Uh-oh.. look what I just stumbled onto:
----------------------------------------------------------------
British pubs in need of aromatic makeover
LONDON, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The recent passage of a smoking ban throughout
Britain has created a new problem for pub-goers, the stale and foul
smells the smoke once covered up.
The Sunday Times of London said a lack of cigarette smoke in British
pubs has revealed the quite unpleasant odor of sweat and stale beer,
prompting one company to begin placing fresher scents inside the pubs
its manages.
Included among the unique smells now filling Mitchells & Butlers pubs
are freshly cut grass and a pleasant ocean breeze.
Oliver Devine, a marketing manager, said such smells became necessary
once the true smells of pubs were laid bare by the smoking ban.
"Appetizing food smells have increased but others are less attractive,
such as stale food and beer, damp, sweat and body odor, drains and --
how do you put this nicely? " Devine said, "flatulence."
The newspaper said similar scents were used in Scottish pubs when that
nation put a smoking ban into effect a year ago.

We have a saying about cheap Chinese products at the bike shop. The
smell that comes out of the box is a mix of:
1.) Paints outlawed in the rest of the world.
2.) Body parts caught in the machine that rotted in the 40' container

Had a hand cart that I bought from Sam's Club, it stunk out the garage for a
few months, especially through the summer heat. The cheap rubber is the
cause, it eventually off gassed most of the smell and now I don't notice it
any more.

I agree. My point, indelicately put for which I apologise, was that you have to buy the crap, to find
out it is crap. Cheap Chinese outgassing rubber crap is shrink wrapped so you don't get the smell till
you get it home. Bosch crap has a German label but Chinese fingerprints all over it.

I think that they are probably pretty smart to be able to unload inferior
products on us. So it is probably that most of "us" are stupid.

Our neighbour is a bit of a loose canon, buying stuff at auctions. So he bought
one of those auto winding drums of air hose (to use with my petrol compressor
for fencing purposes), when I pointed out to him it was 50 feet and not 50
metres, gave me a goggle-eyed look, pressed the thing into my arms and said

I was stung three or four times and I learned my lesson.
I simply refuse to buy *anything* made in China, even branded stuff.
We have a Bosch washing machine - found out it was not made in Germany
after it was delivered - and that was the last time I will buy Bosch whiteware.
Again, the QC simply wasn't up to standard. The plastic parts are brittle,
the paint job is sub-standard...
I'll rather pay 4 times the price next time and buy something made in a first
world country.

Leon & et al,
I've read all the responses to date. I think it's time I stuck my oar in.
First - on the 'answer the real question' side . . . the smell comes from
out-gassing of solvents & other component chemicals. Probably from very
loose control of additive formulation, quick & barely complete curing, and
final cleaning to simply 'get off the big chunks'. I typically get rubber
'trucker straps' to hold tarps in place {they deteriorate to failure after
about a year - the tarp ABD the straps}. Any rubber I've gotten exhibits
this acidic odor - even rubber parts like the 'strap' on a 'Strap Wrench'.
NOW - what pisses me off about this Chinese stuff . . . NOT that it's
'junk'. I've always tried to 'be responsible', 'Buy American', and purchase
the 'Best' that I can afford - for the long term. Something that will be
destroyed in use, or only for temporary use, go for the cheapest around.
Typically, for me, that was Harbor Freight, FREE SHIPPING mail order.
I knew where it came from and I knew it was typically junk, but the price
was equal to the quality.
Over the last many years a number of 'Home Center' Chains opened - and
closed - around the country. At least six, if not more. I've wondered
through all of them. As of now the only ones around here are Home Depot and
Lowes. I don't see 'pot metal' tools & other junk - even in the 'store
brands'. I do see a lot of 'Quality Names' at slightly discounted prices.
However, my 'tool buying' THERE has actually decreased. Shortly after Harbor
Freight changed their 'Free Shipping' policy, a local outlet opened, and I
go there.
WHY ??? Simple . . . when I pay 'dollars' for a tool or part I expect a
'dollar's worth' of value. When I pay a 'nickel' for a tool or part . . . I
don't expect more then a 'nickel's worth'. However - suddenly I noticed a
great similarity between 'cheap' and the 'Top Dollar'. O.K., a wooden clamp
is a wooden clamp, etc. {and a boatbuilder can *never* have too many clamps
!!} Then I started to look at the other 'Adjustable' clamps, including the
'one-hand, ratchet closing' ones. From there I looked at other tools, and
moved on to 'bigger' items. True, in SOME cases the finish was a bit better,
but in others the items were IDENTICAL!!
If I'm paying $2 for ONE clamp at HF, what is 'XX Company' paying for each
clamp when they buy TEN THOUSAND? And how much profit are they making when
Home Depot sells them for $8 ?
OUR government complains about China's record on Human Rights and their
oppressive Totalitarian System. At the same time they give them 'Favored
Nation' status on business & commerce. I don't think 'stupidity' is the
correct word.

OK, I got y'all beat.
Moca, the 9 month old Great Dane ate supper last night, my son took her for
a run, and when they came back she tossed supper onto the back door mat. If
felt like about 5 pounds worth, thank goodness her aim was dead on. I was
able to carry the mat to the outside garbage can and dump the load. ;~)
The stink was at noon today when I accidentally opened up the outside
garbage can to toss in some wood scraps.

Pete,
You just may be going 'nakid'.
I feel the same way you do, which is way a piece on the evening NATIONAL
news caught my attention. Obviously, MANY other Americans feel the same way.
About a week ago one of the 'stories' was about a woman that was going to do
what you propose. If I remember correctly, she was going to do it for a
month. The 'boycott' lasted about a week !! It wasn't even a case of cost,
it was simply a case of 'hidden labeling'. As in, 'Assembled in the US',
'Made for . .' or 'Packaged for . . .' insert any number of familiar names.
Or finding that the major or critical components are from China.

Two things might be worse my olfactory experience ... "durian" in Indonesia,
and _real_ "menudo", made the authentic way, in rural Mexico.
To say that both smell like week old road kill is putting it mildly.
I've eaten menudo in old Mexico, not the stuff sold here in the US, and at
first it took quite a bit of tequila to get it there, but it was good once
you got it to your mouth.

an acre of rice.
