Non-toxic finish for toy box?

A friend recommended salad bowl oil finish, but he said it's around
$60/Gallon. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jerry

$60 a gallon? What is this stuff? Mineral oil is the standard and
even in small bottles at a drug store it wouldn't come close to $60
per gallon.

See Pawlowski's and Mike G's comments. Toxicity isn't a problem today
because you can't hardly find a toxic finish to buy since lead was
banded from paints.

Behlen's "Salad Bowl Finish" is a tung-based varnish.

Sort of reinforces the fact that _any_ curing finish, once cured, is
probably safer than the splinters that would go with it.

If it may be cleaned with all-purpose cleaners, which are alkali, or contain
alcohol to help evaporation, shellac is probably not your best choice.

Shellac.
Pills and candy are often coated with Shellac.

Waterlox Original (medium sheen) is only $34.99/gal, but a gallon
will finish several dozen toy boxes. He has quarts for $14 which
would probably finish 4 or 5 large toy chests.

baby oil, but if you don't want the pink tinge, use mineral oil instead.
This would be much cheaper than $60 a gallon mineral oil that is called
salad bowl finish.... LOL
