Canadians - guess who's coming?

Just read on another forum that Lowes and Woodcraft are coming to
Canada! What do you think of this? I think it is great news -
especially Woodcraft, because I am getting fed up with just going to
Lee Valley. Time for some choice! I just checked Lowes site and it is
already announced there. Checked Woodcraft site but couldn't find any
info' yet. Can't wait!

Anything specific? My experience with LV tools is just the opposite. I
consider them to be an excellent value.

You may have got a dud. I assume you contacted LV and they replaced
it/refunded your money? I haven't used it, so can't comment.

The site says "These screwdrivers come with a lifetime guarantee when
used for driving screws (as opposed to chipping concrete or random use
as a pry bar) and will be cheerfully replaced free of charge as
required." Pretty clear to me.

Works with my chisels and plane blades to my satisfaction.

That's four tools. You said "A lot of the tools are poor quality, they
make them look good with their pictures."

As I said, your experience contrasts sharply with mine, and I have a
"lot" of their tools.

If I were to consider four tools to equal "lots", then he'd have to
list no more.

LV isn't all that it is cracked up to be. As has been stated on this
thread, they have lots of gimmicks and gadgets. A lot of the tools are
poor quality, they make them look good with their pictures. Most of
their stuff is made in places like China and India. If it doesn't say
made in USA or Canada in the catalogue, chances are that is where it
comes from. Yes, they are good at taking stuff back when it breaks but
it's a pain in the a** going back and forth. I am sure Woodcraft has
its problems but at least it would give LV some competition and us
Canadians would have a better choice.

To answer Dave and Bob,
- LV Hammer - massive advertising on this quite a while ago - small
hammer, head came loose on my straight away and later the shaft broke.
Had a look at the one on display and there were gaps in the top where
the handle goes in the head. They are cheap imports.
- Life-time screwdrivers they adverstise - I guess they will last a
lifetime, if you keep taking them back. The head twisted off mine.
- Engineers squares - haven't seen one yet that is accurate
- New Veritas Mk 2 honing guide - not able to hold my chisels; they
just skew in the holder so I took it back.

These are not signs of quality. I can go on, but these are a few
samples.

No wonder things are less expensive 'up north'! In L.A. it takes _five_
people to change a light bulb -- one to do the task and four to 'share the

Could not find similar at Lowes or HD or Ace.

And I apologize for the Dumbass remark. This is just very frustrating.

I won't even go into rebates.
Futureshop refused to honor a $100 rebate because my mailing address is a PO
Box. The store manager finally went good for it. He is a nice guy.
But it says in small print right on the form they give you AFTER you make the
purchase that if your address is a PO Box you don't qualify for the rebates.

Lucky you, you must get mail delivered to your home.
If your mailing address is a PO box like many small communities, or even new
communities, your parcels have to be picked up at the post office.
If I lived in a large community I would have more shopping options and wouldn't
mind so much.
Bosstools is great. They deliver right to my door.
I'm a customer of any company that delivers to my home. I have stopped dealing
with those who don't.

At this point I'd hazard a guess that some very shrewd people at Lee Valley
Tools decided long ago that your business is just not worth the harassment
you'd put them through and decided to pretend they couldn't ship to your
door.

Makes sense to me. I certainly can't fathom what might make sense to you.

Have a good day.

Not according to the Lee Valley rep I spoke with.
If you place an order through the 1-800 number the parcel will ONLY be delivered
by Canada Post. Because that is NOT a brick and mortar store.
If you order from a Store IT'S SHIPPED from the store, not the distribution
center.

Do you drink much Upscale? It certainly seems that way.

I never even asked for a refund. I just suggested that a warning be added that

Rob I loved Lee Valley but did make a change to other companies that have served
me well since.
I tend to be a very loyal customer and often buy things from a favorite supplier
even if they are cheaper elsewhere.
If they let me down you are first in line for my business if I can get
reasonable home delivery.

Thanks for the clarification.

Well "Jimmy" -

With respect - I disagree...

If your address is a PO box, then UPS or FEDEX will not accept the parcel
from us - as Canada Post will not take delivery of it... unless someone puts
postage on it. That's just the way it is - and we have no choice.

If you can give a shipping address that's a street address - then it's
usually no problem (and your shipping address can be completely different
from your billing address).

Having made exactly the same sort of trip to the CP depot many times
myself - I understand it can be frustrating. Sometimes parcels are left on
my doorstop, sometimes they're in the community box, and sometimes they're
2km away at a Pharmacy. You're beef's with Canada Post - not us. We have
enough difficulties with Canada Post ourselves...

Take a look at www.postalproblem.ca and then let me know if you think it's
MY business decision.

Cheers -

Rob

VERY RECENT development.

You certainly can't order from their website and have it delivered UPS.

I was not offered a choice of UPS in December. I asked.

I see STORES are different from the website. So if I want to phone a STORE (long
distance) I can use anyone I want for delivery.
I can have it shipped by mule from a brick and mortar STORE.
That's the same with ANY store you DUMBASS.

You're welcome. The next time you visit Toronto, drop over for a beer and we
can start again. The internet lets people fall into arguments much too
easily whereas meeting them in person makes that event much less likely.

You like playing the poor put upon flake don't you? If as you say, you can't
get
Canada Post to deliver directly to your home (and I really don't blame them
to be honest), then that's the fault of Canada Post and the limitations of a
PO Box.

All of that aside, I just called the Scarborough store in Toronto and
explained the situation. They can and are willing to send orders in Canada
by UPS. Naturally, UPS won't deliver to a PO Box, but they will deliver to a
street address if you supply one. Got that flake?

And City Chef doesn't use the post office. They ship right to my door with
Purilator.
I have to drive to the post office and stand in line for 20 minutes (if I'm
lucky) to pick up Lee Valley stuff. In December I waited in line for 40 minutes.
I have quit buying from all companies who use the post office for delivery
including Lee Valley.
I was a huge customer of Futureshop until they switched to the post office.

Hi Jimmy -

Last public reply - but, I'd be glad to deal with you directly on this...

If your address has "PO BOX xxx" in it - we can't use anything but Canada
Post...

Since your orders have been placed on the internet - you are in control of
what address is entered. From the orders I have reviewed - there has been no
"Shipping address" used, nor has there been a request to ignore or remove to
"PO BOX xxx". You have requested catalogues, and you have returned a vase
brush after it melted when you used it with xylene....but those are the only
notes.

While we can ship to you by FedEx or UPS, we would have to quote you exact
shipping for those orders...the rates are significantly higher than we've
allowed for in our pricing.

For example, to ship a $10 book weighing 1 kg (2.2 pounds) to your
residence would cost :

$27.30 by FedEx ground
$26.13 by UPS Standard ($41.29 Express)

$11.97 by Canada Post (and, I would add - that's for delivery in 6 business
days, which is pretty good for all the way across the country)

Cheers -

Rob

Ahh, now the problem comes to light. You don't understand things very well.
Why didn't you say so? Hey, there's no shame in needing things explained to
you. Every six year old needs an explanation now and then. *You* just happen
to need more explanation than most.

You're not too bright are you? Orders are shipped from Ottawa. The stores do
not ship directly. As well, I've placed orders by phone using a credit card.

What excuse do you have now? (aside from needing extensive explanations for
every step of the ordering process)

My street address is right on the top of every parcel you have sent me. They
still go to the post office.

This is NOT true, at least not here.
If I leave off the PO Box and you ship with Canada Post they will RETURN the
parcel as no valid address.
Futureshop suggested I leave off the PO Box and only list my street address and
the blender I ordered was sent back by the post office as address unknown.

Future shop uses the identical service you do at least as far as I can tell.
Priority post told me that if you live in an area that get's it's mail in a PO
Box that is the ONLY address they consider valid.

We have KMS tools which is usually much cheaper than House of Tools.
There is Bosstools online as well but they carry very little in the way of hand
tools.

I just wish Lee Valley would stop using the post office for delivery. I won't
buy again until the do.

Personally, I love Lee Valley's catelogs. I look forward to them. The
Christmas one in particular. I end up getting a lot of stocking stuffers
for the kids there. I think it's great.

Sure, they're a tool store that has grown to include garden stuff. Frankly,
I know a lot of woodworkers who are also into gardening (or their spouse
is) - I think it's a good fit.

That said, if you don't like the trinket stuff - DON"T BUY IT. Obviously,
enough people do like it - if you go by the store around the holidays, half
that stuff usually gets sold out by the beginning of December.

I think Lee Valley is great. I certainly welcome Woodcraft and Lowes (I
hate the Depo), but I will still be a pretty loyal Lee Valley customer.
They've always done right by me. I've received updated manuals in the mail
for products I've bought (without asking for them). I've received refund
cheques when a price has dropped. I've received replacement parts for a
product because they thought the original design was defective in some way.
While LV is not the least expensive store in town, I have to believe that
I've always got my money's worth. And when you look at the big picture
(like those things I just mentioned) - that's customer service that is
unheard of, and I appreciate it.

Three - you forgot about the guy checking how they do it in L.A. (That's

It's funny how so many Torontonians compare themselves either to New York
(finance centre, art, theatre etc) or L.A. (film etc) when it's really mostly
like Chicago (mid-continent Great Lakes city - one used to smell from the
cattle trade, the other is called Hogtown for similar reasons etc).

In addition.
Mark's deliver to my PO BOX as well. Their system is set up to drop at the post
office if a PO BOX is in the address. If I remove the PO BOX address from the
order they can't process it because it doesn't match my CC address.
I asked them if there was any solution and they found one.
Now I email my order with a notice asking that the POBOX be ignored for delivery
and they deliver right to my house.
$5 any order.

So as you see some companies DO put their customers first.
I spent $1200 at Mark's this winter. I buy almost all my clothes from them.

BTW 4 different courior companies have delivered to my home in the last two
months. So no it isn't out of your hands. You could use a different courior
other than Canada Post.
It's YOUR business decision and I support that. But I refuse to support any
business who uses Canada Post when there are plenty of companies more than
willing to deliver to my door
Canada Post can't even provide a dolly to get the boxes to the car for Christ
sake.
Your business might be first class Rob but your delivery is decidedly third
class.

I like LV also but give the guys a break. He listed four tools and specific
problems with each. How many would he need to list before you were
satisfied.

Hi Lee -

Yes - I do check in frequently...but have been out of the office.

I'm perfectly willing to discuss just about anything... but will not debate
specifics publicly with anonymous posters...it's a no win situation.
Particularly ones that are vulgar...

If "jimmy the shopper" has a PO box as an address - our hands are tied...we
can only use Canada Post. It's not up to us...

Cheers -

Rob

Been there done that with Lee Valley. They have no plans to switch away from the
'cheap' Canada post. If your mailing address is a PO Box in Canada you pay the
same price as those who get home delivery but you have to drive to a post office
to get your stuff. Which means we get screwed.

Look it up Rob. ON 12806032
I think that was my last order. The jar on the paint sprayer arrived smashed. No
biggie because I have 30 just like it but it was my last straw with Canada Post.
I have had no problems with your staff.
I politely asked last year if I could get home delivery and was told no...end of
story.
I wasn't rude or vulgar until the likes of Upscale called me a liar.

I stopped going to Lee Valley when they started selling yuppy toys
instead of tools. Hell, you can't work in the garden and get dirty
any more! Now I browse the catalogue, but it's like going to the flea
market. There's always a minute chance you'll see something among the
junk [I once got a great antique small yankee drill, mint, for a
dollar, and several planes for a dollar or two each]. Who needs a
gyroscope, or a long hose that attaches to your kitchen tap for
watering your houseplants without carrying around a nasty old watering
can? What happens when you disconnect the thing after every use? Do
you empty the hose, or leave it coiled around the kitchen tap and
greet every visitor in your rubber apron and gardening shoes?

Sounds more like bad luck than bad tools. I sink more of my income into that
evil store than I care to admit, and am continually impressed by the quality
of their tools...and they get a hell of a workout around here.

If it is a flourescent bulb, you'll need at least one more to file the
environmental impact statement and, since you're in California, maybe a
lawyer.
