Newbie Question - Featherboards

I've heard of 'em, and seen 'em in use by Norm on TOH, New Yankee Workshop,
etc., but I've never seen a picture of one so I could duplicate it. Can
anybody post a link for this and other basic beginner tools & tips? How do
they fasten to the saw?

what's a "non-standard acronymn"? All groups of people use there own
terminology, some of it as TLA and FLA. When in Rome.... roam around.

hahaha, easy NorthStar, a little less coffee maybe? You are both right.
Doing a google search in the rec.woodworking group for "featherboards"
only takes a second, not hours and results in much the same links as you
did get and perhapse more.

After doing the google search if you had more questions about it's use
or best wood or why would anyone make one out of plywood then that is
where the post comes in.

I have to admit that it is far easier to not reply to a post than to
take the time to hammer DAGS at evryone that asks a question that may
have been answered before but not all of us work the same way. that
what makes life "interesting".

Just to keep this on topic, I also have the bench dog feather boards
but did not buy the miter bar. I just made my own. they are very easy
to setup and I can use them on my router table and my TS. I use on for
rips and the other to hold down.

ok, I stand corrected. from my information gathering experience I start
the the narrowest search and expand if I get insufficient results. if I
am trying to get an answer to a woodworking question, I start with the
wreck and expand from there. I don't read any other groups so have to
plead ignorance on this one.

This page is OK for tips on construction. I prefer poplar over plywood
for featherboards. The illustration of how to use the featherboard is
WRONG! Having the featherboard extend past the front of the blade is
asking for kickback.

Bench Dog Tools makes an excellent plastic featherboard called the
Feather-Loc. It is connected to an aluminum bar that locks in a mitre
slot with two screw down handles that expand the aluminum bar. It is
so quick to set up that I use it for all rip cuts where it will fit. My
homemade featherboards work fine but take more set up time to clamp to
the table or clamp to the fence.

You need to go to the google search for this group:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&group=rec.woodworking

Then click the little butonthat says/reads:

"Search only in rec.woodworking"

Then you won't get all the "BUY FEATHERBOARDS" crap

696 Items it took .7 seconds first six pages and not a single "BUY
FEATHERBOARDS" Item

You can also "Sort by Date" once the results come back then you'll have
the most up todate info.

If more people used it we won't have to tell SO MANY people what table
saw to buy. But that will never happen, thats why old timers just type
"DAGS"

If you took my post the wrong way, it is entirely YOUR problem.

Now, be prepared to 'WTF" some more:

Did you search the archives before you posted? Obviously not ... but had you
lurked a bit before you tried to become a forum moderator with the post
below, you would have known it is expected that you should do so before
posting that type of question.

Count yourself lucky that it was me that TOOK THE TIME to answer your

I have several shop made ones and a commercial one similar to the links
below. The commercial tightens in the miter slot and is very handy when
what you're cutting doesn't cover the miter slot.

Well, I think that a lot of folks would interpret DAGS as meaning search
web sites, not newsgroups. The former can take hours.

The _only_ newsgroup that I frequent which assumes newsgroup search by
default is this one. This newsgroup has it's own inside jokes, it's own
abbreviations/acronyms/whatever etc, and the learning curve isn't as
trivial to the newbie as some other newsgroups. Even going through the

Ok, that's it. This will possibly alienate me in this group for a bit, but
WTF...

Just WTF is your problem, Swingman? What's with all these barbed comments
about searching the web? Yeah, I can search the web. I can sit here at
this damn desk for hours on end looking for answers to simple questions on
the web. Instead, I chose to post a question here for someone more
knowledgeable than myself to answer. The name of this
newsgroup--rec.woodworking--implies that people can come here and learn
things about woodworking. Tips, tricks, techniques, etc. This means
imparting knowledge to others about what works well, what doesn't work so
well, and what flat-out sucks.

Just one USEFUL thing that I've learned in the last two days of reading this
group is what Steve James just posted about positioning the featherboard in
front of the cutting blade. That useful tidbit will certainly prevent me
from possible injury and possibly ruining a project piece. It may also
enlighten others, too. That is, by my definition, a useful post.

You, on the other hand, dull your usefulness with rude and insultingly
barbed comments. If you don't like a question that is asked here, DON'T
ANSWER THE DAMNED THING!!! Insulting someone who is looking for information
and help is asinine, childish, and wrong!

The first reply you made to my query, I just chalked it up to your having a
bad day. When you responded to Steve's reply in the same base way, and
managed to work in another insulting comment to me, I pegged you as another
Internet jackass that feels safe and secure in his little room while trying
to ruin another person's day. The same kind of immature idiot child that
pokes a stick at a chained dog just to torment it and thereby make himself
feel big, or tough, or good. While the rest of the world sees you for what
you really are...

Oh, and lest you think you can delve even farther into childishness and
commence ranting and raving at me here, I can killfile you. Picture this,
if you will: you sitting at your computer in your pathetic little room,
pounding at the keyboard and venomously frothing at the mouth, and I won't
see a stupid, damn word of it.

On the other hand, if you decide to lose your attitude, we can get along
famously. It's your choice--be unsociable, or be sociable. Either way,
it's no sweat off of my backside.
