Got the latest tool porn catalog today...

and I'm still trying to figure out the functional difference between the
LA smoother (05P25.01) and the newer bevel up smoother (05P36.01). the
new one is wider, same length. How does it differ enough to be useful
if I already have the LA smoother?

How long of a panel justifies the use of a 22" plane? Let's say I would
seldom flatten anything longer than 4 feet. Would the 18" #6 Fore plane
suffice or should I use the 22 incher?

A long jointer plane is really nice for flattening wood. I have an old
Stanley #8 that I just love. If I were going to buy to buy a new one from
Lee Valley, I'd go for the 22". I like the extra weight and the bolt-on
fence. For my preferences, I never bought a jointer from Lee Valley because
I felt the #6 was a compromise and that was the longest they sold. If the
new jointer had been available when I was looking, I would have bought it.
In the meantime and pristine Stanley #8 came along for $50 and I could not
pass it up.
