Ben:
Since Knox was knocked out of business I haven't found any 3/4" screws, I do
have the remains of a box of 3/4" straight shank, nickel plated screws that
do the trick most of the time.
However if you're not in a hurry, I'd try:
7-Corners Ace Hardware, not as busy as it used to be, but in the corner of
the first floor, they have a gazillion fasteners in bulk.
The hardware store over in Golden Valley, in the same strip mall as Down In
The Valley records. Off Hwy 55 and Winnetka/Golden Valley road. Also a wide
variety of fasteners, at a bit of a premium.
Then maybe Fastenal, they have many outlets across the Twin Cities.
Then after driving around some 50 miles and pissing away an entire
afternoon, I'd probably order from McFeeleys online and have them delivered
to my door (they don't _have_ to be square drive).
Also, I'd ask for "construction screws" -vs- "drywall screws", because while
they may exist, I've never seen a 3/4" drywall screw, and for the purposes
of woodworking I find them generally interchangeable, with a preference for
the construction screws, they seem a bit stronger than the traditional #6
drywall in my experience.
And I found these...
http://www.chaircitysupply.com/pdf/SG_Page10_CONSTRUCTION_SCREWS.pdf
Frankly, I'd prefer a different set of screw sizes, like 1 3/8" for
fastening 2x3/4" pieces, 1-1/4 seems too short, 1-1/2 might "peek through".
Or 2-3/4 for a couple of 1-1/2" pieces because the 3" will "peek through"...
Good luck.

As far as I know, Lowe's is not around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
Home Depot and Menards are the two big chains.

I bought a handfull at my local True Value hardware store. The were labled
"cabinet screws" but looked just like drywall screws and they were not cheap.

FWIW, I've never been able to find them. Of course, even 1/4" drywall
(when you can find that) works better with a longer screw. Just wanted to
let you know that it seems like a difficult thing to find. Good luck.
maybe im not understanding what you are doing, but if you have 1/2 inch
drywall, that leaves 1/4" to go into the stud. not enough.

What are you going to use them for? Everyone here it seems assumes you
want to use them for drywall. Drywall screws get used for many purposes
other than drywall.

I have purchased them at Menards in the past - but it has probably
been a year or more since the last time I got a box.

so you got 1/2" now. personally i would feel better with just a bit more.
in any case, assuming a 2x4 stud with a 1" hole in the center for electic,
thats still 1-1/4" you can go into the stud without worries of hitting
anything. the guy said he could find 1 inchers which would be fine also.
and like i said, maybe im not understanding the situation. there really
isnt any need to use 3/4" drywall screws under 'normal' circumstances.

Probably not a good substitute for a dry wall screw. Square drive screws
don't cam out like dry wall screws and easily over drive into sheetrock.
Ben,
I have a few 3/4" and 1/2" drywall screws. How many do you need? They are
great for woodworking and hanging bathroom fixtures. The longer ones are
great for hanging cabinets. Those wood screws you refer to are junk I know
how frustrated you must be. If you are not using bulk quantities you can
cut off the first thread of 1" screws, but thats not practical if you need a
lot. Just curious what are you using them for? You can get 100 here for
$3.00. http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/3drsc1.html

Maybe you are misunderstanding the situation. 1/4" sheetrock is use in
curved walls and curves in the walls are often shaped with 3/4" thick
material like 1x4's. Typically a fastener only needs to be 3 times the
length of the material that it is supporting.
Dang!! $1.85 for just ONE screw??? :-)

McFeelys sells a lot of screws with their "combo" configuration - it
will work both with square drive and with Phillips.

Fred - Excellent point. I buy 3" "drywall screws" but not to use with
drywall. When I commented above about also having looked for 3/4" drywall
screws, it was not for drywall. My focus, and maybe OP's, is a screw head
that will hold the bit well and not easily strip. Dywall screw. Doggie
bag. Simple terms, broader meanings.
As for the McFeelys link Larry Jaques provided, it says squarehead but the
image looks like Phillips.

Business section of STRIB today. "Home Improvement retailer Lowe's will
open its first area store in November or early December in Coon Rapids.
Lowe's is planning to open several locations in the Twin Cities market."

Well, learned somethin' today after all. Thanks.
I don't live in the metro area anymore, so I can't check myself, but
have you looked at Fleet Farm? I know Farm & Fleet in Wisconsin sell
a huge variety of fasteners, and the prices are right... generally
$1-$2 per pound.

Maybe McFeely's? http://www.mcfeelys.com/
(Hey, Ray. You gotsk?)
If not, they have flathead square drives which should work.
FWIW, I've never seen anything other than coarse 1-5/8" and
fine 1-1/4" in a drywall screw.
