grain filler to dark on end grain

I am getting ready to apply mahogany colored grain filler to a
mahogany table top however my test piece end grain is way to dark. Am
I supposed to put the filler all over even the end grain?

Options...

1. Seal the end grain first

2. Use transparent filler (end or everywhere)

3. Don't use filler anywhere

IOW, do it so it looks the way you want.
