Doug Miller, or anyone: Has anyone used NFilter with XP Pro? It's not
mentioned on the Web site, but I'd hope that NFilter will work with it if it
works with NT.

Thanks.

Agent. Get rid of OE.

Takes about 10 minutes to get a nice, clean look at the messages
again. And you can filter out by domain address...a big time saver.

Thanks anyway. No doubt I should just install it and see, but I am always a
little wary of putting software I'm not sure of into a system that's working
well as it is. Comes from years of dealing with Win95 and '98. (Don't
hardly seem right using a Windows machine that doesn't freeze more than once
or twice a month. It ain't nachurl.)

NewsProxy aka NFilter, available at www.nfilter.org

Search the archives at Google Groups for information about how to install and
configure it. Those instructions have been posted here repeatedly over the
last couple of months.

George:

You might want to consider reading the group on a newsreader like

http://xnews.newsguy.com/

As well as using a filter like

www.nfilter.org

I use Nfilter with Agent and the only thing I put in my .DAT file is

* drop xref:*:*:*

Which tells it to ignore crossposts from more than three groups. I
use three groups because I also subscribe to the two binary
woodworking newsgroups. If you only read the Wreck you can delete the
last two asterisks and periods.

For the non-crossposting trolls you will have to filter within your
newsreader by author or subject. I have been filtering by author and
it works well - with only a bit of daily maintenance.

I've never used OE and so can not give you any advice on filtering
within it.

Tom,

I use XP. I tried NFilter a couple of months back without success.
Everything seemed OK, but the shit was still coming through and nothing was
appearing in the "Dropped Articles" bin. I assumed it was an incompatibility
with XP and gave up.

However, inspired by your post, I've just had another go. Dunno what I've
done differently installation and configuration-wise this time, but I
deleted and reset the "Wreck", reloaded all the messages, and, what do you
know, all of the trolling assholes and their crossposting hangers-on have
gone into the NFilter bin, and the wreck now looks like it used to. Sure
there are still assholes there, but at least they're *our* own homegrown
assholes :))

Thanks for the encouragement to give it one more try. To those people who
haven't got NFilter to work yet, I'd say that it's not a particularly
user-friendly piece of kit, but if you follow David Eisan's instructions in
the FAQ and persevere with it, it's well worth the effort.

Cheers,

Frank

Thanks for the input. I think in my case it was the "Enable Regular
Expressions" which might have been the problem. I certainly don't recollect
it from my last foray into NFilter.

Nfilter works. www.nfilter.org

Once you get it fired up, there are already proven filters for the wrec
floating around on the back channels that someone will be glad to get to you
by e-mail. All you gotta do is ask ... (try to keep at least a half step
ahead of the trolls by keeping the proven filters OUT of the newsgroup)

Right, that's all it is, just a proxy. Nfilter connects to the newsserver, and
your newsreader connects to Nfilter.

That means your news server doesn't provide that header. Remove the filter(s)
that are attempting to filter on "path", or ignore the warning (it's
harmless).

The most common problems are:
1) blank lines in the nfilter.dat file,
2) using "regular expression" filters, _without_ 'enable regular expressions'
enabled in the config screen. or vice-versa.
The syntax of the two styles of filters is *not* very compatible
Note: 'regular expression' filters are *MUCH* more powerful, allowing
you to do a _lot_ of things in a single filter. As a result of
bing that powerful, they _are_ considerably more 'arcane', and
the learning curve is fairly steep.

Nfilter works well on all of them but newsproxy.exe does bail out on

I haven't found any reason why anything posted to this NG is relevant
to any other NG, therefore I just filter anything that's crossposted.
It doesn't get rid of everything, but it's pretty effective.

Owen & Dave,
I'm having 'some' trouble.
WinXP stopped it twice before I selected "Run in compatability mode for:
Windows 95".
NFilter is now saying "OVR:09D0 WARNING: Header 'path' is unobtainable
(can't be filtered) OVR:09D0 +006 WA".
I've had enough for tonight.

Thanks Doug.
Took some time but I think I got this thing figured out. At least to do the
trick.
I modified some of the ones people have posted, and then made a couple of my
own.
Time will tell.

Thanks too all!
Yep, it's behaving as you say!
I had some crappy filter commands (at least for my news server) that

Spoke to soon....
This thing may have been working ok, it sure seemed to earlier. Now it's
choking...
I've had it. Just going to use "Block sender" in OE and call it a day, cause
I got plenty to do rather than fighting with nfilter.
Thanks anyway,
PS I am not leaving the rec cause of some jerks.
