I'm looking at the smoothing planes. I'm curious if anyone has
perspective on the difference between the coffin smoother and the
finish smoother.

the coffin is good for pushing and doing large surfaces for longer
periods of time. the finish plane lets you hold the plane in different
ways push or pull one handed and such.

The hammer you want to use is from Chester Toolworks. It's a sweet little
gem, brass & lignum, and lightweight. Steve sells them.
I sure miss having the time to do the finer things. Gotta finish that
darned kitchen!
Patriarch,
owner of a couple of Steve's beauties...
Got one and use it. It is sweet.
Just that a 'beginner' finds it strange to beat on fine tools, even
with fine tools.
A kitchen's just for food. Work on the important stuff!
Regards.
Tom
Owns one, ordering a second...

I have only the coffin smoother and it is a joy to work with, after
you beat it into adjustment (just kidding, I hit all my pretty tools
with big hammers).
