I think you're having a problem in comprehension and going way over board on
this. Read my original post. It stated my opinion outright, it was not
ambiguous and didn't imply anything other than what I said.
1. I don't feed the trolls and don't advocate doing so.
2. I do advocate reporting them and if their posts turn into harassment -
such as it did to one individual, then it can be made a legal matter. Free
speech forums do not turn libel acts into non-issues as you may seem to
think and they can be legally prosecuted.
3. Don't underestimate who and what can be done to find an individuals
identity.
4. Who are you to judge that no real harm has been done? The person/s being
harassed will obviously think differently.

Usually true but not in this case. I have bothered to set up filters so
that I will not have to read any of this jerk's posts. He can change ids
and I still won't see them. As a precaution, I also killfile him. If
everyone did this, the problem would go away, starved of attention, the
child will go elsewhere.

Go for it. Give the troll what he wants: attention. There is nothing you
can do about it unless you find out his real identity.

Yes and it is obvious you don't understand the nature of the troll. By
reporting him you are feeding him, it is the attention he craves. Some
children are so starved for attention, they would rather be punished than
ignored.
> said nothing about giving them attention - and as for finding out

You will not get a subpoena, it will not happen. If you think you can,
shit or get off the pot.
> this case ? "Starved of attention" - they haven't gone away
Exactly, they have been reported several times and the troll just gets a
new email address and starts over. You know why he bothers, because
people are making a fuss over him by responding to his trolls to tell him
he is an asshole and by reporting him and posting it in the newgroup.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the troll isn't one of the people
responding to his own posts.

My suggestions are the cure and benefit everyone but the troll.

Shhhhhh Robert's on a roll......
He seems to think that violating an ISP's or a USENET group's rules are a crime.
Careful he knows some cops and he aint afraid to tell them...something....

Libeling who? An anonymous screen name that belongs to someone that
none of us could name and few could identify in a picture? To prove
slander or libel you have to show damage done.

I think Mxpx was speaking more to the issue of what could be done even
IF the individual could be found.

I think the person involved has already spoken on this issue himself.
The harm done? He left the group for a short time (a very short
apparently as I see a whole new batch of postings from him this week).
I agree with Mxpx - you are living in a fantasy world. But what the
heck - we all can dream...

McQualude,
Maybe he *does* understand the true nature of the troll and we have
been had by the best? Food for thought...
-Chris
Chris,
Fair enough on your responses. Both of you have been saying reporting them
does no good, etc. and saying essentially that making it a legal matter is
nearly impossible. First of all, about half my relatives are on a police
force either in NY or PA and Wash. and that includes the NYS State Police,
County Sheriffs Dept., local City Police, one with the FBI and a number of
others on the City of Philadelphia force. Some have retired but still have
connections. As I said - do not underestimate what can be done to find an
individuals identity if needed bad enough.
I would like to know why you're saying you can't get someone prosecuted ?
Do you have first-hand knowledge of this, are you a lawyer and have
experience in these type matters, or is this just something you've heard
that indicates it would be tough to do? I'm definitely not a lawyer but
harassment and libel are as valid on the net as they are anywhere else. I
didn't say it would be easy but when it comes down to harassment, even the
ISP's are telling you (read their policy's) to report it to the police. It's
that simple to get the ball rolling - it's the unwillingness of individuals
to do that because many think that it can't be done. It can - and its done
nearly every day. Some of the larger ISP's have made the press fairly
recently about the individuals they're prosecuting for spam - and
harassment - and they're winning cases.
So reporting it does a lot of good in the long run - providing the ISP's
live up to their responsibilities. Granted, we may not see a short term
fix, the idiots keep coming back but sooner or later, they will cross the
line and ....
Like I said, not going to turn the other cheek, been around long enough to
care and to do something about it, spent a career in the AF and damn well
not afraid of a fight or a legal battle.
