Edge Sander

Well last year I almost built 100 drawers and 90% had dominos to
reinforce the joints. There was also tons of doors and drawer fronts
and quite frankly I am getting tired of edge sanding with a hand held
sander and or by hand sanding.

Is any one here using an edge sander? Any recommendations on brands? I
see most entry sized tend to use 6" by 80" belts and Jet offers a
oscillation sander.

OK, so 241 miles isn't close, but you just gave me one more reason to
question the Texas school system...

Looks like a 31-730, similar to this one: http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?id=5207965&convertTo=USD

Click on the NSN tab, in the item manifest, to see the specs. The Hooks machine may be single or 3 phase, there is no access to the item manifest for the Hooks machine, but they can be emailed or called, if interested.

Like jointers, planers, etc...bigger is better. If you're just doing edges=

Don't know if you'd want to travel this far or take a chance on something as this, but

there's this one in Hooks, Tx.
http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=5200924
That's the wrong model number listed, so don't know what model this is.

There's this one in Seguin, Tx: http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/tls/2902298753.html

Karl's link may be your local best bet for a used machine.

If you wait a few months, I understand that Festool is coming out with a new
edge sander that will hook up to your dust extractor. On $32, 000!! That
should take care of your needs. <g, d & r>

$150. <cringe> I'm going to get some hands-on time with a 55 at
Medford Tool today on the way to the MD.

Returned with meds and more info. OK, the TS55 -ALSO- growls and
vibrates (not quite as bad, but the Makita has a more powerful motor,
so that's expected) during the soft start, so it's common to the
beasts. The guy at Medford Tool said the DeWally did the same thing.

So, I took the track back to HD today and they ordered a new one. The
girl said I could either keep the track or let them dispose of it. I
kept it and will try to straighten it. A friend of mine is a machinist
so he can probably help. It wasn't -kinked- so I might get away with
it. If so, it saves me the $150 from the extra price of the Festool
and another $150 for the second piece of track. All I'll need is the
pair of connectors, and they're only $30. I sure liked that CT26, but
the damned price is just too much. I'll likely use the shop vac
onsite and the DC in my own shop.

Festools are nice, but I can't see spending that kind of money on
green tools. <gd&r>

Yeah, we had some wind yesterday.
Did you see the video of that twister picking up semi trailers and
tossing them like toys?

It was about 20 miles from here - and I had blue skies at that time.
Go figer.

Then it darkened up and the clouds were scratching their bellies on my roof.

But all we got was some medium hail and rain.

About driving in Texas?

Texarkana to Chicago - 700 miles.
Texarkana to El Paso - 750 miles.

What a shock! Soft starts will kinda make a growl when coming up to speed.

A few bucks more and you can get a Festool.

Umm Baton Rouge is like a state away from the salt water bowl, New Orleans.

He made a mistake. The comma should be a decimal point and one "0"

Yeah. There's no _way_ they'd sell it for that little.

Hey, I saw footage of Dallas today. She's suckin' right about now.

Had a Boice-Crane in TN; it was 8x108 iirc; found it at auction.

It was _not_ oscillating; for our purposes it was ok but for kitchen
drawers, etc., like your use I'd recommend strongly to go that way as
it's very easy to burn w/o it, and especially w/ light woods that's a
cure that's worse than the disease phenomenon.

Unfortunately, I don't have any firsthand experience w/ the Jet or other
similarly-priced current offerings; only the above advice regarding the
use thereof.

I have a 6x108 chinese knockoff of General that doesn't oscillate. I did
try using it some at first on face frames and some other stuff, but not on
drawers. It tends to sand unevenly with the left side getting more cut, so
I used it only on short rails, etc. I get some use out of the curved end
where it turns to sand/cut on top rails for curved arched doors. Sometimes,
I use it for misc. stuff, but not regularly. I have an old delta
combination 12" disc and 6x48 belt sander that I use once in a while also.
Both machines are invaluable when I need them. I believe I would get a
whole lot more mileage out of an oscillating spindle sander most of the
time. As for sanding doors and drawer fronts, I cheat and use a small
Timesavers, but a good barrel sander will work just as well, only it is
harder to change the sandpaper. Before I had the belt sander, I used a
Bosch Random orbital, which is much faster than the small critters around.

I'm not sure that I can help you with that. When on some occasions I have a
square edge with maybe a roundover or other pattern, I will just use the
random orbital, and sometimes freehand sandpaper on the pattern. Most of my
customers seem to want an edge profile that can't be sanded by an edge
sander and must be sanded a little mostly with the random orbital and by
hand. There are some high-buck machines that will do this, and even ease
all of the edges on the doors/drawer fronts simultaneously, but I don't live
in that neighborhood.

If you decide to sell your vehicles, cash out on your house, put your kids
up for adoption, and possibly sell your soul, then look up denibbing and
contour-sanding machines in your search engine.

Those are three states. Houston & Dallas are both in _one_, but I grok
your hyperbole, Leon. Metaphors be with you.

I'm returning the Makita SP6000K1 kit. The track was bent and the saw
growls and vibrates in an unkind way during the soft-start, but is
sweet when up to speed. <scowls and taps foot>

I wouldn't own anything from the Katrina washover area nor would I
ever set foot in Nawlins after the storm. That was all contaminated
horribly by the fracking and drilling pools which blew all over hell
and gone before and during the hurricane. The whole area is a toxic
waste dump. (The movie _Gasland_ was a real gagger, and an eye

Like jointers, planers, etc...bigger is better. If you're just doing edges
of doors and drawer fronts you'll probably be ok with a 6" belt, but for
drawers you're probably going to want something wider. We picked up the
biggest Grizzly that takes a 9" belt at auction and it's been solid. The
wraparound table on the end is sort of flimsy but it pretty much works if
you tune it each time you need it. But for edges it's great. As a
sidenote, they ought to put SawStop technology on these suckers...damhikt.

Way back in my teen years, we had vacationed down on Corpus Christi.
My sister and I were looking out the high window of the pickup camper
as we drove from Lake Charles, LA. We drove along the coast road, I
remember seeing the lights of Corpus Christ and thinking we will be
there soon two hours later it looked the same, as it was another two
hours later and we still were not there.
