newbie bookcase help

Hello folks, I just posted a picture of my first attempt at a bookcase in
abpw. I'm stuck on how to go about gluing it up, would anyone with the
patience and interest take a look & see what you think. BTW, if you're
easily offended by poor quality work do yourself a favor & don't look -
I've got thick skin so don't worry about holding back negative comments ;)

Good evening, Adam ~

I'm sure that your bookcase will turn out fine and you and your family
will enjoy it for many years.

Welcome to the wonderful world of woodworking.

I'm 80 years old and I spent most of the day in my shop. I have acquired
a fair amount of hand and machine tools over the last 50 years and
recently bought a lathe. Now I am learning to use it,

Please keep us up to date on future projects.

Peace ~ Sir Edgar.

I agree - trying to slide glued up shelves into dadoes is
a bitch - I have made this mistake several times. You can
get them to go, but when you get 1/2 to 3/4 of the way
in, it requires a lot of persuasion.

In my (limited) experience, it is better to assemble
all the shelves/top/bottom to one side, then drop the
opposing side onto this assembly.

Of course, I've learned from Norm.

do the glueup from the center out.

first label all of the joints so they go together in the right
sequence.

glue up the center box. make sure it's square and the joints are all
pulled up tight and you have all of the squeezed out glue cleaned up.
let it dry, then put the top and bottom on, make sure square -n-
tight, yadda yadda, then do one side then the other.

1. Glue up the four outer faces (top/bottom & sides) to make the outer box.
If you're going to have a plywood back, then put this in place now which
will help square the case. If not, check the diagonals for square and
adjust as necessary. I'd pin the joints with brads when you get it square,
and then use bar clamps for at least an hour while the glue sets.

2. Apply glue to the dadoes and ends of the two tall interior dividers and
install these. As long as your case is square this will be no problem. I'd
use some brads through the top and bottom (won't be visible anyway) to hold
it in place and then use some clamps again while the glue sets.

3. After the tall dividers are set up, I'd put all the shelves in place.
You probably could get away with putting this in right away.

The main thing that I'd worry about with this design is ensuring that the
outer box is glued up square and stays that way. Having a plywood back to
it would be the most effective way to ensure this and will add a lot of
rigidity to the case.

Hey Mike, thank you very much. I was wondering how I was going to be able
to apply glue to all those joints and manage to keep everything square
before I ended up with all my glue dry. When I first thought about doing
this I wanted to leave the back open but it's turned out bigger than I
originally envisioned so I'm going to take your suggestion & put a back on.
Thanks again,
Adam

Thanks everyone for your kind words & advice, I had a full day today so
the glueup will have to be on Sunday. Once I get the edge tape &
finishing done I'll post some more pictures to abpw.
Hope everyone's having a great weekend

I don't know why you'd worry about how it looks... it looks fine. I'd be proud
of it.

Back installed would preclude using clamps to push the insides to
where they need to be as glue sets up. I frequently put the back on
last attempting to get/keep things square through earlier steps.

Mike-
that assembly sequence means sliding every one of those dados.
