Hi all,
I was in the process of hooking up my trailer to go get a bunch of free 1800's
heart pine (I'll gloat on that later, after I've seen the material ;-)) and I
thought "wouldn't it be nice to have an enclosed box that fits the trailer bed
and lifts on/off via a hoist in the garage?" (like a Haul Mark etc). It would
be the best of both worlds - leave the trailer bare for big ugly stuff (e.g.
the wife's mulch :-)) and put the box on for more security (e.g. taking the
tools to job sites).
Anyone have ideas for this or have done it before? I'm envisioning building a
frame of either 1/2" angle iron or even wood, and then attaching lauan to it
for a shell. Then maybe fiberglassing the whole mess for structural
integrity/water tightness.
The one drawback is that I think I might be getting near the "you could've
bought a damn Haul Mark for that!" point ;p-)
Cheers,
-Henry

First question - is there already a hoist in the garage rated for at
least 500#? If not, re-inforcing the frame in the garage to support
such a hoist will add to the cost.
I saw this done in plywood - it was quite heavy and leaked a bit.
Whatever material is selected - treat it like it will be in heavy rain
frequently. That should eliminate the materials which would rot out.
