Hello, I am an architecture student with interest in furniture design.
I've designed a dining table which I'd like to have it built. I would
either like to do the entire thing my self (but alas, I cant seem to
find any schools in Toronto area that offer night/weekend courses) or
have it built by someone else with my input and help.
Is there anyone out there with an interest in furniture design that
would be willing to take this on as a project for a fee? Unfortunatly,
I just started working so cant really afford to pay you big bucks like
some companies might (but hey, trust me, you'll love the design:)
I am thinking if you are a senior student this might work best for
both of us.
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

no luck so far in finding schools that teach woodworking in Toronto. I
called George brown and found out the course got filled 2 months ago.
I guess it's quite popular. The basic description of the table would
be it's a table for 8 (3 each side X 2 at head table) I am just
looking into getting the table built first, will think about the
chairs after. As for material I really wanted to get it built using
"antique" reclaimed wood or floor boards from old factories - I am
doing my inquiry in to acquiring some. I like the idea of it since it
tells a story. There is no fancy carvings or any of that for that
matter, the legs are tapered and will have stainless steel base which
I think I can order online. What do you think of it so far?
I don't mind it getting it built by someone else with my input, but
unfortunately I am not in a position to dish out thousands $, only a
few hundred and the love for design which I can share with you. Anyone
interested please contact me. I live in Toronto.

sorry for not being clear enough. I am thinking of spending around
C$250 dollars building it, which does not exclud material cost Am I
too neive in expecting to have someone build this or me for this much?
I was hoping if I get a senior student, or a hobbiest, who is more
interested in design than making a profit it might work out. I am a
designer with architecture background and I am also prepared to work
on building it. The only thing is I dont have the big $$ to spend
it...
Any luck in finding a place in a woodworking class?
Is the table in solid wood? What sort of timeline are you looking at
for completion? If you are still looking by next week, contact me.

Have you approached the Toronto School Board to see if there
are adult woodworking courses available in any of their
schools during the evenings? Does the city board of
recreation offer any woodworking courses?
From the description of the design, seems to be a fair size
table. Designing it with leaves (or leaf)?
Does the stainless steel base also include the apron?

If materials run $100 and it takes less than 10 hours you may find
someone willing to help you out for $250.
Be warned, price goes up by 25% if you want to watch, 50% if you want to
offer suggestions that will be discarded, and the price at least doubles
if you want to help.
For a hobbyist the result of their work is their profit. What your
asking is for someone to basically do free work.
You were being clear, this is the nicest answer I could come up with.
Go to your local wood worker shops and supply places, shop your 'free
labor' idea, see what reaction you get. You'll probably get a reaction
more like what I really want to write which is somewhat ... harsh.

OCAD used to offer evening/summer courses in the woodshop, but I'm unsure
what they offer now. You might want to try calling/stopping by the shop
there just to see if there is someone interested. Another option, Central
Tech (Bathurst and Harbord) probably has something available.
Let me know how you make out.

Neat project...
Realistically speaking, a budget of few hundred dollars means you are
in the market for someone willing to build your table for free. if you
cannot find student in a furnituremaking program, perhaps there's a
woodworkers' club or association around Toronto that could solicit
interest among its hobbyist members.
Here's a place that's about a mile from where I am that sells
reclaimed wood: www.longleaflumber.com --I'm sure there must be
something similar near you....This stuff is more expensive than new,
not less, by the way. With a few hundred dollars to spend, the choices
may be using something more prosaic or doing the reclaiming yourself
from a demolition dumpster.

A person that 'love(s) the design' may eventually USE the design.
You should look into your national patent laws...and how to protect
yourself...before you venture any further.
Good luck.
