Getting ready to do said subject. Seams to be 2 methods for avoiding glue on
the exposed part of the tenons. First is apply glue only to the non exposed
part of the tenon and none to the mortise. Second is to apply finish to the
exposed part of the tenon and apply glue to both M&T. Not sure yet what the
finish proceedure will be yet so I'm favoring the first method. The project
is Stickley style Morris chairs and the M&Ts are large and double pegged
Any better ideas out there?

Some of tips
1. put a chamfer on the "inside" of the mortise (the tenon shoulders
will hide the chamfer) so squeeze out has a place to go that
won't
be visible. While you're at it, chamger the end of the tenon
as
well. The chamfers on both the M and the T will make putting
them together easier and helps avoid splitting the corners of
the tenon if the fit is very tight.
2. with a soldering brush - apply glue to only to the sides of
the tenon - but none on the first quarter of its length.
3. Waxilit - available from Lee Valley. Has the consistency of
thick vasoline. Apply where ever you don't want glue to
stick.
Let dry, carefully wipe of excess and then do glue up. Any
squeeze out will come off easily. Wipe the surface down with
alcohol on a rag or Q-tip to remove Waxilit before finishing.
Michael Fortune shared this little trick at a woodworking show
demonstration. He found it while doing a bunch of windsor
chairs.
He was spending more time cleaning up glue than he was making
the chairs.
