Then, search on rec.woodworking
That will bring up the most recent threads, and you can go back forever.
If you want to narrow it down, click on "Advanced groups search" to get as
specific as you want. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the
Advanced Search page, and it will serve you well in the future.

Even easier: go to groups.google.com. Type in:
Your search terms group:rec.woodworking
You can also use wildcards in the group field.
To search all groups having woodworking in their name:
Your search terms group:*woodworking*
And, to omit a term, nazi, for example, use a minus sign:
your search terms -nazi group:*woodworking*
