Re: Spam in this group, Why us?

I subscribe to about eight usenet newsgroups that reflect my various
interests, and they have varying degrees of spam. Some have none,
some have a little and then there is rec.woodworking the champion by
far.

Wonder why that is? Is the criteria some level of posting activity or
do they think we are all dumb enough to consider the pitch.

Inquiring minds.....

Google doesn't care. They live on volume.

Stop giving them the traffic, Charlie.

It's probably related to the posting volume. Low volume
groups seem to attract less spamming activity. =20

Hard to believe, but even spammers are efficiency minded.

I forwarded about 50 of "Mr Watches" posts to Google Abuse this morning.
They didn't pay attention to the one complaint that I made last week, so I
decided to let them see what it looked like to get the spam forwarded to
them. I got one abuse complaint number e-mailed back to me (maybe they got
the message?). Only time will tell if they really paid attention. Last week
they didn't even send me a complaint number.

I would suspect that the spammers post in groups that have
a high rate of hits on certain search terms. Dunno what
it is in this group that would do it, but I did notice a spam
for an online game called maple something or another.

There is a newsgroup dedicated to discussion of newsgroup
spam, news.admin.net-abuse.usenet, should you wish to
consult with people who may be more on top of the issue.

I sent one complaint, and got back a blank reply from Google ... I'm
thinking they're developing some kind of spam filter they can use on
gmail/googlegroups that will have ample room for built-in advertisements, so
why kill the goose that lays the golden spam/egg?

I've never heard of any responde from zGoogle regarding spam.

BTW - you can also "report spam" using googlegroups/browser.
That doesn't seem to do any good either....

Here is their toll free number, 1-888-765-3990 according to their website.
I'd call them and ask to speak to their spam department.

Well if their business strategy is based on trademark infringement
I rather doubt that they are concerned about spam.

But

1) at least the call will be on their nickle.

2) It ties up one of their lines for a while.

I note that their automate answering system pronounces their
name 'glob all replica'!!!

Uh, whose number is that?

The antecedent of 'their' is rather vague.

I suppose it could be a spammer,
the ISP who hosts a spammer's webpages,
the ISP hostling that spammer's domain registery email address,
the DNS registrar,
or Google.

I'm right there with you, Frank. I subscribe to three or four more
besides this one, and this ng is as bad as it gets. Usually these
torrents of spam seem to subside after a couple of months as most that
have been here for a while know.

I don't recall it being this bad for this long. Over on the barbecue
ng, nothing. Same with woodturning. The only thing I can think of is
that this is a higher activity group than either of those two, making
it a better target.

FWIW, I get almost no spam. In this NG, maybe 12 pieces a week.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird (free) and aioe.org (also free). I assume the
server does most of the filtering, and I've done some active filtering
inside Tbird.

YMMV

Thanks for the heads up....I just added "nntp.aioe.org" to my
newsreader(Outlook Express) and it has close if not zero spam...quite the
difference. For those not changing or adding the news server (one can add
multiples to Outlook) setting your preview to zero seconds(marks message as
read) makes slogging through it slightly less painful. Rod

The problem with Google, and several others, is ZERO server side
killing. I usually don't see much either
