Spam - Porn

I belong to several different newsgroups such as this one, but I have
never come across so much porn spam as I see coming up on this list!

It is unacceptable!

What can be done to get these postings to our list to cease?

Bryan

You see, its the psychology of the
trolls in this particular group that
they would be capable of writing
a message just like yours to get
a lot of replies and a big old hearty
yuk-yuk!

Try installing "News Proxy"

http://www.nfilter.org/download.html

I'm using it and haven't seen any of the porn.

Jack,

Did you finally get it to work with 4.79 or are you using 7.1? If 4.79
would you mind sharing what you did to get it working? I think I've
tried about everything with 0 being my results. My email addy is good if
you'd prefer off-list.

TIA,
Scott

I have leafnode (local news server) set up to reject anything crossposted to
more than two groups. Even that has been enough to cut out everything I
would consider "porn spam." (That cowardly choad who keeps giving JOAT a
hard time isn't really a spammer.)

I find that people might occasionally have a legitimate reason to cross to
two groups (ie the Wreck and the metalworking or woodturning groups) but if
they're posting to three they're either spammers or they don't really know
enough to know what they want. Either way, filtering them out is no loss.

(G) Not all that bad, but with all the virus stuff running around plus the
spam and porno the last thing I needed was some clown that just joined the
group making a post as if we were all a bunch of yokels sitting around with
our thumbs up our asses who haven't yet stumbled on the concept that porn
isn't a good thing.

With a few exceptions I really don't think we needed to be told it's a bad
thing and something should be done.

I also don't like the assumption that if something universal could have been
done, we haven't done it. This "What can be done to get these postings to
OUR list to cease?" from a newbie set my teeth on edge. If his other lists
are so wonderful and he's got to post anything let him post a solution.

Not that it matters much. Now that the clown has chosen to call me an
asshole (in a private e-mail) guess what list he's going on in my computer.
He can get his help somewhere else as far as I'm concerned.

Take care

Well gosh and golly gee I'm sure glad you came along to tell us all the porn
was bad. I'm sure none of us were aware of that up till now.

Of course none of us, not knowing porn was bad, ever ever had any thought
about doing anything about it.

Maybe you, with your wide experience, can handle it for us now that you've
made us aware it is a bad thing.

There isn't anything reasonable you can do to get them to
stop.

I'm not seeing much of the porn at all and the only thing I
have filtered out is cross posts. Get a newsreader that
will filter out messages based on how many times they are
cross posted. I set mine to not accept any cross posted
articles and the few times I have checked I wasn't missing
anything worthwhile.

I'm using Gravity (it's either shareware of free now), there
is an add on you can add to other newsreaders but I forget
it's name. It does improve the newsgroup experience.

If you're accessing the newsgroups thru Google, you don't really
belong to them.

That's because Google, for a variety of reasons, collects a lot of
crap that most newsservers filter out.

Well, you could start by trying to get Comcast, Roadrunner, and
Attbi to go out of business (most spam comes from clueless
broadband users who have installed misconfigured proxy servers).

Failing that, I suggest getting a decent news reader, and accessing
the groups thru a proper newsserver. If the newsserver you use
doesn't filter out the spam (most do), you can either filter it
out with the newsreader (if it's a scoring type like Xnews) or
install a filter program (like nfilter).

I have installed Nfilter and I don't see the porn spam you are referring to.

Check out any of the Mini-FAQ's I post, or today's post on how to filter the
Anti-JOAT and I think you will enjoy the wreck a little more.

Thanks,

David.
