Moderating rec.woodworking

The NAN moderators have lifted the ban on accepting proposals to
convert unmoderated groups to moderated groups. I will be submitting a
proposal (RFD) to make rec.woodworking a candidate for moderation,
after a passing vote (CFV). Please look for the RFD. It will be posted
here.

Thanks, and feedback welcome.

Nope, those of us not using your filter are seeing the headers and
ignoring the sad, sick mind behind the posts.

The initial posting regarding moderation seemed close enough to plausible
to illicit an initial response -- the other posts are so stupid as to flag
troll to anyone seeing them.

Not always. I've got my own filter set, and I was beginning to wonder why I was
seeing totals up around 250 posts and finding about 25 when I opened the NG. I
checked Google Groups and was really surprised that the lid had slipped off the
outhouse again.

I dislike censorship in any form, but it does seem as if Google could offer
some kind of filtering for their groups, or do some filtering before archiving
such universally despised nonsense.

None of that matters when submitting an RFD. I have been a very long
time lurker, and lurkers rights are equal to posters rights on Usenet.

> Why in the world do you want to do this?

This house is a mess; time to clean it up. I will submit the RFD within
24 hours. Voting will start about 21 days later. I have a *very* good
feeling that the vote will pass, and that I will become the moderator
of rec.woodworking by next month. I suggest you start being a little
nicer to me if you want me to pay attention to your ideas during the
RFD process.

Hey Bobby boy,
as a long time lurker and a past poster here
I think your really trying to mess up a good thing.
Out side of a few curse words ,I find NOTHING to biotch about in this
forum.
Now ,maybe, having read this group through google maybe eliminates the
porn listings (which I've yet to see any ) but I see nothing here I
wouldn't let my 16 yr old daughter see.

Wow! I go offline for a few days and look what happens. Why can't you
guys just play nice? It was a nice newsgroup when I left and now
you're all up in arms. What ever happened to the old group where we
talked about wood, and new tools for Christmas, and finishing, and
cutting your weiner with a saw stop. That's the way I liked it! If I
had it my way I would..... Hey maybe I could be the moderator?
Whaddya say? How about a vote for me? I'm off to plan my election
strategy. Don't start without me. I'll be right back....

Unfortunately, rec.woodworking is something of a smorgasborg for trolls
for exactly that reason.

The apppearance of the "false Dave Balderstone" as I predicted
demonstrates that the troll is actively following this newsgroup and
feeding off the responses.

Well thanks Robert. About time someone stepped up and took action. As you
can see, some of the guys here are not nice. Not my fault, I've often said,
"guys, you gotta be nice'. Sometimes I've said "guys, you gotta stop
posting off topic stuff here." They just don't listen to me but I'm sure
they will listen to you. You've got a lot of charisma.

Will you be needing as assistant? We could do this together. Maybe get
uniforms. Yeah, uniforms with brown shirts and a logo. We can get business
cards and have a title after our names. You can be the head monitor. In
some languages that would translate to "monitor of the head". Catchy huh?

Whattuya think? Damn, this is exciting.

Hmm... I'd give you around 25% chance unless there is some sort of
cheat-the-vote process I'm not aware of...

> I suggest you start being a little

...Make that 2%. Although I like the idea of a moderated group, I suggest
starting a brand new group to do so. With that last statement, I doubt many
will support you beign the moderator. Moderation takes clear, emotionless
thought and the ability to judge a post for its content regardless of
whether you think the looney who wrote it is an oxygen theif or not.

Here's some feedback for you...

1. Who are you?
2. Why do you think this group needs moderation?
3. Are you aware of the recent failure along similar lines, and the
reasons for same?

Since newsgroups are the only true democracy there isn't much chance
of anyone becoming a dictator. People just wouldn't participate in
'his' newsgroup and would simply move somewhere else. A PITA for sure
but not really a dictator. Fortunately this jerk is a TROLL and isn't
likely to do anything but stir up this otherwise 'bored' group ;-)

the chief cause of NG death is lack of interest, usually cause by
getting your wish, a strictly on-topic, polite place to not spend
time..

If you look at the threads that gather the most responses, you'll see
that most of them are OT or stated on-topic and went OT quickly..
that's a GOOD thing... newsgroups are made up of people, and people
bs, tell jokes and talk about a wide range of things...
take that away, and the only sound you'll hear is the echo of your own

Anyone who's using my filter file with Nfilter is not seeing that
racial-epithet trolling at all. Which might account for lack of response to
it. I didn't even know it was there until I visited Google Groups to search

Excellent! For too many years this group has been full of so much filth!
What according to google groups, here are some word distributions:

woodie: 245 (my god, it seems like a favorite topic. pervs)

stroking wood: 23. Ok, not *so* common, but more then enough to be
worriesome, especially for impressionable young children!

cross dressing: 26 hits. I am seriously worried. I just wanted my kids
to be lumberjacks, and now the little punks are dressing up like women
and hanging around in bars!

dressing wood: 67 hits. 'nuff said.

You are absolutely right. And I didn't even cover glory hole (22 hits),
pole sucking (1 hit), greasing wood (6 hits).

What a horrible, horrible place. Clean it up, please!

It's precisely because "a lot of beating" occurred that it took so long for
the troll to go away. Trolls seek attention; when they are denied it in a
particular venue, they go elsewhere in a big hurry. Witness, for example, the
case of Bay Area Dave, who disappeared within a few days after the group
finally reached a public consensus to never, ever, respond to any of his
posts.

Best to ignore it altogether.

For starters, the post is a lie.

Where's around here? ... I wanna boycott the place. ;>)

I am in the process of formulating a fledgling theory in my mind that it
helps to be totally incapable of being a professional sports fan in order to
really appreciate O'Reilly.

Me? .. an unabashed O'Reilly fan, and making no bones or apologies for it.

More like an O'Reilly, say, than any liberals I know. After all, it's O'Reilly
who has appointed himself savior of the country from fund raisers in Hollywood.

Yes, which explains why most of the posts that get a large number of
responses are of this ilk. Mostly silly and off topic. Hey! Maybe
we should have this newsgroup moderated...
Just kidding!!! REALLY! I didn't mean it...

Actually I like to think of newsgroups, this one in particular, to be
like the old general store. People hang out and talk about
woodworking but most of those conversations are short, and quickly
resolved (after all, how many ways can you stain cherry? Just
kidding! - I really don't want to know) but talk about something that
gets people riled up - well, now you've got yourself a 'discussion'.
Who would want it any other way?

The above threat that you made establishes that you are not fit to moderate
a newsgroup. Moderating is not the same as blocking people because you carry
a petty grudge against them.
I suggest that you petition to form a new NG called
rec.woodworking.emperor_mcclenon where you could openly wield your threats
and rule with an iron fist. That way your impact on rec woodworking will
match your contributions to the group.
I encourage all readers of rec.woodworking to forward a copy of Mr

have the RFD rejected as an attempt at power seeking.

Uh, there was a serious attempt to create a moderated group a while back,
led by one nutcake. Went to a vote, he won the vote, then it turned out
that there were so many irregularities in the voting that the Powers That
Be decreed that another vote be taken, which he lost.

This could be the same guy and if everybody ignores him then he might win
his vote by default and become the moderator, which in his case will be
semantically equivalent to "dictator".

Given the fact that we just went through this with a *real* proposal and
*real* [fraudulent] vote a few months ago, folks around here are just a
mite edgy and a bit trigger-happy. So, if'n ya know what's good fer ya,
you'll watch yerself around here, OK?

Is every one THAT bored???

Over 60 responses to this lame troll.
I've never seen a 'mature' news group respond like this.
In most well established groups a poor troll like this wouldn't get a handful of
responses.

Sort of. Not exactly over and over again. The troll posted on 12
January, and is getting a late reply to the same troll post. In this
case, the problem is not the troll, but people responding to the troll
after the troll has moved on to doing damage somewhere else.

Given that my comments were neither abusive nor combative in nature, but
were purely legitimate questions and comments backed up by facts directly
related to the discussion *you* chose to start, you have identified
yourself as being of way too thin skin to be allowed anywhere near a
moderator's position in which personal affronts should in no way affect the
selection or deletion of postings. Frankly, whether you pay attention to
what I, or anyone else for that matter, say during the RFD process is on
little consequence -- it is what those voting think of the ideas expressed
during that discussion period that matter. This is true of course, unless
you are implying in your comment about having a very good idea that this
vote will pass that you have identified a means of assuring that the votes
will be there for your proposal.

Moderating a newsgroup as active as the Wreck is normally done
primarily by a robot and secondarily by humans who write scripts for
the robot and make sure that it is running.

Posting messages claiming that a group as active as the Wreck is about
to be moderated is done by a subspecies known as a troll.

No, you won't. You will become the moderator of
rec.woodworking.moderated. Rec.woodworking will continue to exist and
will completely ignore you.

I seriously doubt you are going to welcome the feedback you get regarding
this. Particularly since this appears to only be the second posting you've
made to rec.ww, the other posting was also participating in a thread
dealing with creating a moderated woodworking group.

No. The NAN had to impose a ban because moderation in place does not
work. The way to deal with trolls is to ignore them.

Bob, I've lead the effort to create something like 4 newsgroups. I
also ran a poll about splitting this newsgroup (ok that was several
years ago), and I can tell you this....

Your proposal will fail

Your history is a little off. There was no second vote. After the PTB
decreed the vote invalid, the original creator of the RFD withdrew his
second proposal.

I do find myself going to the yahoo woodworking group more and more. They
seem to police it a little better and the trolls are almost non-existant and
the racial and other belligerant type stuff just doesn't get on there.

I would suggest the more descriptive and accurate term, "statist": one
who believes that regulation and control are desirable and that
individualism and free thought are dangerous and to be suppressed.

I would also suggest that "troll" is probably most appropriate. Sorry
sadsack has probably wet himself excitement over the furor his little
posting caused.

I worded the sentence poorly.
I was referring to the age of the group not the maturity of it's members.
Most 'mature' groups have seen so many trolls over the years they mostly go
completely ignored but not here at the wreck.:)

So long as you're not the moderator I'll think on it. I'd rather put
up with the OT crap, which is easily deleted. Like sorting through
junk regular mail, it's now instinctive and on automatic, and takes
seconds. This troll topic is on that list now.
