Finally - I get to post one of these. I think this falls into the category
of "eat yer heart out..."
My son just purchased a Ryobi 18v L-ion kit containing a circular saw, a
sawsall, a screw gun, and a flashlight in a nice bag. Regular price at HD -
$299.
He paid...
are you ready?........
are you sure you're ready?.................................
You're going to hate this............................................
$29.00. Brand new - never been opened!!!
Now - isn't that cool?

It seems that packaging was supposed to have been marked down for clearance
in the past. Or, was marked down for clearance in the past. Just a routine
re-packaging type of thing where the manufacturer is going to replace that
offering with a slightly adjusted one. Somehow this one unit escaped the
notice of anyone in the store. The computer diligently ticked off the time,
marking it down further and further automatically, but nobody noticed.
Maybe they thought it did not really exist in the store, so they just
ignored the markdown notices. This would make sense because it was
absolutely loaded with dust, indicating it had been stuck up overhead for a
very long time. So - it finally hit this point quite automatically. It was
the only one in the store, so I'm sure it was some sort of oversight.

Oh - he is indeed! No - I didn't get one too. There was only one in the
store.

A similar thing happened with a 13" Ridgid planer I bought 7 or 8 years
back for a ridiculous low price ... IIRC, there were a couple of us on
the wRec that managed to get 50 - 70% off on that tool due to Ridgid
repackaging the same 13" planer in a kit with a dust hood and stand.
Y'll suck ...

Yeah - they unload when it's the last one but not at 90+% off. Like I said
in another response - they do markdown when the manufacturers discontinue a
packaging, or a product, but that markdown schedule is pretty well defined
and starts at trivial markdown levels like 20%, and seldom gets to this
level.
He picked up a pallet of fertilizer 2 years ago for a penny a bag. There
were 77 bags of fertilizer on that pallet. $ 0.77 plus tax for the whole
thing. We're still spreading that fertilizer in the spring. The stuff that
drops to a penny is really not supposed to be sold - it's supposed to go
down the dumpster, but they sold it to him.

Was it in the store or on CL?

It really is Pat. And, I'm happy for the kid. He's a hard worker who does
a lot for people that need help. He takes care of projects for the old
folks in his neighborhood (no charge for labor or materials as long as it's
not a major project), he's a first rate dad to our grand-daughter, a model
husband to his wife, and a hell of a good son. Well... except for maybe the
fact that a really good hell-of-a-good son might have thought that this kind
of a deal was just the thing that dad needs...
I raised him to give back even before receiving. He understands the notion
that what goes around comes around, and that some day he'll need somebody
and the measure of what he receives will be based on what he's given. He
also understands that just because he can, is reason enough to help those
genuinely in need, simply because they can't.
Sorry - got on a proud dad thing, and then decided not to hit the delete
key, but to hit the send key instead...

Good on yuh Mike. Sooner or later you have the right to boast about the
way your kids turn out.

That suction will likely affect the weather in your neck of the woods

Yeah - great ain't it? The only down side I see to it all is that he did
not think "gee - this would make a neat present for dad..."

Just _one_ question --
"Did he use a gun?"
I was once asked that question by a cold-call telephone salesman for office-
supplies. He was promoing computer paper -- which we _were_ about out of, so
I told him we'd buy, _if_ he could meet our regular supplier's price. He asked
me what we regularly paid, and when I told him, that prompted the question. (It
wasn't a 'fair' offer to buy -- I had an outside-user account on the local
University mainframe, and that let me by paper through the DP center at _their_
price. They bought in multi-truckload quantities, and passed it on to campus
users 'at cost'. OK, so I had to pick the box up on campus, and carry it to
work. It *was* worth the _70+%_ discount vs. the onesey-twosey price from a
paper distributer (and about _90%_ under what the phone-guy was offering).
