Hardware ID question

I bought an object from an antique store and I have no idea what it
is. It's made of metal, the number 16 is written on one of the sides,
the only part that moves is the bottom, with much effort if will slide
into the top half about 1/16", when released it returns as if a spring
is inside.

I was hoping someone here might recognize it.

Sounds like a good possibility, I haven't heard any better suggestions
for it, if I find any verification I'll post it here.

Looks to me like part of a door latch - the part that goes into door
itself and then is retracted by the handle.

Also, i had a number 74, the rocket shaped thing, as a kid. You
unscrew the top, insert some caps(rememebr cap guns), throw it up in
air and caps explode on impact when it hits the ground..
