Good source of hardwoods in Seattle area?

Can anyone suggest a good wood dealer in the Seattle area?

TIA

A couple of others in the area worth mentioning are Hardwood Supply out
in Redmond, Sumner Woodworking, Portland also has Gilmer, probably the
largest of the bunch.

Welome to the NW Dan, if you get that glass table top just add
sandpaper and you have a place to sharpen your chisels and plane irons
:)

Across the street from Crosscut Hardwoods is Compton Lumber. They have
a big stock of the more common hardwoods and they carry s4s, if that's
what your into. I like Crosscut better for exotics and they have a more
service oriented staff. If you are measuring goodness of a wood dealer
by pricing though, neither of them has struck me as a great bargain.

I haven't had a chance to check out Crosscut yet. I buy most of my
hardwood from Edensaw out in Port Townsend as I live in the West side of the
Sound. They have a store in Kent as well on south 194th st; website is
www.edensaw.com. They were featured on the Lumberyard episode of Modern
Marvels on the History Channel, IIRC. No connection, just a satisfied
customer.

Hadn't heard of that one before, thanks Clint.

The hot weather is not really an anomaly. It gets that hot around here from
time to time, just doesn't last very long, that's why people say the air
conditioning is not needed. The need is quite infrequent. I compromised. My
bedroom is air conditioned, nothing else. I, myself, moved here from Japan.
The people around here don't know earthquakes. Been in this area for 18
years. The biggest earthquake they have had was actually fairly minor. The
damage that did happen was due to structures not built with earth movement
in mind. They need to hire Japanese contractors. :)

Thanks for the recommendations & the welcome! Moved here from central
Ohio, my wife & I LOVE IT! ESPECIALLY the WEATHER! And one thing I've
found is people sure are friendly here, which seems to extend to the
local woodworkers. I'll definitely look into the sources you suggest.

Neil-Thanks for the insights. Since my shop is pretty minimal at the
moment (I had a Delta jointer, but had to sell it before moving here,
along with my Unisaw) so the s4s is just what the dr. ordered at the moment!

Welcome, to the area. People here are polite but not friendly, very
clicky, very closed to newbies. They say hi on the streets but you will
not get invites to barbeque's, etc. Being new you might want to check
out Evergreen Woodworkers Guild, http://www.ewwg.org/. Not a member,
yet, but I have found them to be very friendly and helpful to their
fellow woodworkers.

I would reserve judgment on the weather until you been through a few of
those 90 days of rain in a row, 2 days of clouds and then another 70
days of rain, actually more constant drizzle than rain. Been here 30
years and it still drives me crazy. Does make everything green including
my garden fence, the patio, the retaining wall, sigh! Time to get out
the power sprayer.

Also, the earthquakes are very exciting. The building next to me was
damaged so bad it had to be torn down. I lucked out being in a better
built one apparently. Big cracks in the walls but no collapses.

Good luck.

...and the good part about the weather (ignoring the rain)

the temperatures are fairly mild. A couples of weeks where it may get
into the 90s and a couple of weeks in the 20s. Once in a while a little
snow but we don't get the horrible ice storms that Portland seems to get
quite often.

The Evergreen Woodworkers has a mentor program if you join. So, if you
are really interested in something and are not quite sure about details
you can buddy up with a mentor to show the ropes.

Yes, that's where most of my wood comes from. Good selection, reasonable
prices and, unlike some places these days, are just as interested in the
hobbyist as in the commercial shop.

Thanks CW. I'm new to the area, again nothing like good word of mouth
;-) I'll check them out next week. BTW my 1st project is a wood base
for a glass dining room table, 42" x 72". Now that I have a source for
the wood, I need to find/price the top. One place (Cascade Glass on
Nickerson in Seattle) has quoted me $560 for a 1/2 thick top, delivered.
Have you ever had occasion to buy such a thing in the area?

Thanks, I had found them on google, but you can't beat personal

GOOD! I tend to hate that stuff anyway, though my wife would probably
enjoy it ;-)

The last time I bought any glass was about 15 years ago. It was also in
Kent, about 25 miles from Seattle. Can't really help you there.

Thanks for that. I didn't even know they were there. The Kent store would be
about a five minute drive from work.
