Twenty Two year old Kevin Blanchard, a Marine Lance Corporal, spoke to us
while at home in Troutville last July, after being hit by a road side bomb
in Iraq.
Blanchard: I just kept asking if my legs were still there, I think my mind,
cause I looked down and I saw both boots. I think my mind wanted to know
that they were, but my left foot was not.
Kevin lost his left leg and nearly his life. 18 surgeries later, he's
recuperating at Walter Reed Medical center.
Kevin credits his parents, girlfriend and even a special visit, from
President Bush for helping him heal, physically and emotionally.
They credit Kevin's spirit.
Kevin I believe this happened for a reason and I know that sounds weird but
I wouldn't take it back for nothing.
Kevin tells me he's a better person for having served in Iraq and for losing
his leg. He uses his experience to help other injured soldiers coming into
Walter Reed. Now, Kevin has a prosthetic leg and helps other soldiers with
everyday tasks like picking something up off the floor, and most importantly
he lift their spirits. He shows them they may be hurt, but they are not
wounded forever.
Ronnie Blanchard, Kevin's Dad: He never once said, I don't wanna go or can I
get out of this.
Kevin's parents, Gail and Ronnie aren't surprised by their son's courage.
Kevin will always be their hero. He risked his life and was spared.
Ronnie Blanchard: There are so many, you hear about the casualties and they
don't get to come home, but we don't hear about these guys that sacrifice
their limbs and everything else for this country.
A sacrifice Kevin is proud of. We're proud to call him an American hero.
