I read a lot about getting the rear fence (the one closer to me) set
square to the saw slot in the base. I liked the idea of making a slot
for the screw on one end, to allow adjustment - but couldn't figure out
how to make it strong enough. So I did the adjustment before screwing
it to the base.
I assembled the runners and the front fence to the base, and then put
it on the saw table and cut the slot through the front fence and back to
about 2" from the rear of the base.
Then I clamped the rear fence to the base, tighter and one end than
the other, and used a good square to see when the fence was
perpendicular to the slot - tapping the looser clamp to move it. I
tightened both clamps, rechecked the squareness (it was still fine) and
then I drilled two holes through the base into the fence and put in
screws. Then I added more screws.
At this point I could complete the saw cut, and I checked it once more
and everything seems fine.
Now to decide on a guard - I'm thinking about thin lexan fastened to
the tops of both fences.
