I once encased an 8' lower section of a cresote telephone pole with
western red cedar. The pole presented a nasty problem for the
unknowing children catching the school bus at this site. I adorned the
octagonal casing, top and bottom, with simple moldings/dressing, as if
it were a porch/veranda column. The casing is in 2 halves, latched
together and easily removable, for whenever any utility workman needs
to climb the pole. It has since weathered nicely and is still very
functional after 10+ years. Hence, whatever suits your scenario.

If you provide no information, how the hell do expect anyone to give
you advice? We have no clue what you like, the decor you may want to
match, etc.

So, I'll say: Wrap the beam in sisal rope. It looks great! If you don't
like that, maybe consider painting it taupe?

Or, you could always box it in with cedar...

Or just paint it yelow and be done...
