Sounds like me. I haven't fished since before I started using the wheelchair
which was 1982. But, I came across an article recently detailing accessible
fishing spots in and around Toronto, so I'm gearing up for it. Went to a
Bass Pro Shop and bought a new 3 piece fishing rod with case. I also bought
a new reel and a compact tackle box. Headed over to home depot after that
and bought some 3" abs pipe which I'm going to convert to something similar
to an umbrella stand to hold the fishing rod etc. That I'll make attachable
to the back of my wheelchair. It may be even be awhile before I actually get
to one of those local fishing spots, but at least I'm having fun by building
something at the same time as I'm getting ready for it.

A dear friend of mine, Roy Kenner, sang in The James Gang with another
Torontonian, Domenic Troiano after Walsh left and went solo prior to
getting scooped by The Eagles.
Troiano, who sadly passed away in 2005, was every bit as competent on
guitar while he was with James Gang till The Gang broke up. (Troiano
went on to work with The Guess Who for a while after that.)
I learned a few tricks and tunings from him which, even today, sound
like I know what I am doing. All smoke and mirrors, of course.

I used to have a nice three-some of raised beds. 24 feet long. Pole
beans, tomatoes and a whole variety of peppers. I liked doing that
kind of work.
Then one day, I'm at the Farmers Market here in Sarnia, and walked out
with a whole whack of all kinds of veggies and spent less than 20
bucks. Amaroso tomatoes, the fattest bell peppers, and mini potatoes
and beans and pencil sized asperaghuseses. [sp?lol]

I know that is not why many people grow their own, but I simply ran
out of time and with Ang's school schedule, she can't do it either. I
haven't gone fishing in too long a time either=96 something I love
doing.

But I still have my pear tree. (AFAICT no partridges, and they're good
eatin')

So, aside from no fishing and gardening, I don't hunt pheasant, duck
and quail anymore either.

Back to summer dresses.

Until last month, it had been 25 years since I did any serious fishing. I
promised myself it won't be that long again. I even got to looking at
fishing gear the other day. I remember dreaming about the latest rods and
reel and lures in the Bass magazines when I was in college and too damn poor

As a kid I loaded hay on wagons in the hay fields just for the privilege of
being able to quail hunt on old "Tightwad" Moore's farm, and, being an avid
wingshooter, there were times after I got out of the service that I never
missed a day of duck/goose/dove season.

I no longer hunt either ... don't think it has anything to do with age, just
no longer have the itch to scratch. I also promised myself a million times
that I'd own a pool table when I "grew up" ... I guess I just haven't grown
up enough in some areas, and too much in others.

But! I did do an "old man project" today ... something I haven't done since
I was a kid. I built two screech owl nexting boxes for a neighbor. It felt
good to go in the shop and do something that wasn't "furniture", and you
could hold it together with your hands, without clamps, and nail the hell
out of and no one would care. :)

And the wood only cost $1/bf!

Every wooddorker deserves a like project on occasion ... aspic that cleanses
the wooddorking soul. I imagine that's how Tom felt after he made his boy
that footlocker.

I'm right down there with ya Swing.

I stopped hunting about the time the Vietnam War ended. There was
something in my thinking that didn't make me want to kill anything
anymore.

I still like to shoot but my good shooting buddy moved to Maine a few
years ago, so I don't smell the powder much anymore. I look forward
to teaching the boy how to shoot when he's twelve. That will give me
back my shooting buddy. The only problem is that the house arsenal is
limited to a 1903-A3 Springfield, a 12 G Mossberg pump, a Colt 1911,
and a sorry ass .22 of indeterminate parentage. I guess that gives me
license to score a couple of decent .22's for 'educational purposes'.

Fishing is just sweet and pure and feels good and smells good
and...just a lovely thing to do.

There is almost no prettier sight to me than watching the sun rise on
good bass water, with the mist curling off as the sun bakes it away.

The boy caught his first bass last year and is hungry for more.

Thank god he's a country boy.

As for the palate clearing project - I've finished the trays and need
to attach some leather grips tomorrow. It has been a wonderful
project. I didn't approach it like a usual work thing. No plans,
just build part and look at it - then build another part and look at
it. It'll be done tomorrow. In a way I'm kind of sad.

Going bass fishing on Thursday - the day after school lets out.

As cold as it's been around here until just recently, the largemouths
might still be on the beds.

We'll be charging up the trolling motor batteries tomorrow and
checking out the gear. Need fresh mono on all the reels.

We'll probably start with four inch rubber worms, no weight, and cast
in tight onto the shoreline.

The boy (11) will get yanked out of bed at 5 but probably won't know
he's even awake until he smells the water.

Going to try out the newish pressure washer on the fifties vintage
Grumman aluminum 14 footer. I'll be interested to see if it tears
anything off that I didn't want torn off.

Thank god for fishing. Whenever I'm sick and tired of everything
else, feeshin' is there to help me through.

I have a 40' dock out from the beach that neatly divides our property
from the neighbour's. The dock is mine, but it's shared with the kids,
drunks, nimrods and assorted paraphernalia that a summer cottage
attracts. In the interest of neighbourhood peace, I share the dock with
those folks.

Most of the time it's not a problem but I truly don't like my fishing
time at the end of the dock interrupted. Kids can do that diving off the
dock and coming back onto the dock.

I think I've fixed that this year. An old pool ladder that I salvaged
will go on the end of the dock. It's not something I want or need, but
it's a magnet for the neighbour kids. As well, I've got a floating
platform running right-angled from the end of the dock which is designed
to be my fishing platform.

I'm with you Tom. Fishing gives me some sense of sanity, whether I catch
anything or not. (Ok, let's be honest here - I wanna catch something)
There isn't much sanity to be gained when I have to watch for anyone
else snagging a hook or otherwise getting in the way. And sometimes I
don't want to launch the boat, get all my stuff in it and paddle out to
where the 'big one' lies.

Life is good.

This thread reminds me of the story about the traveling salesman who
visited a house of ill repute.

The madam greeted him and began to show him the girls that were
available, starting with the young and trim ones.

The salesman kept rejecting each group.

Finally, the madam said, "I've shown you all the girls and you are not
happy."

"What do you want?"

The salesman replied, "Do you have someone about 40, 15-20 pounds over
weight, sagging breasts, bad breath, and hair starting to gray at the
roots?"

"To tell you the truth, I'm homesick."
