Title: U.S. SERVICE MEMBER KILLED IN VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Release Date: 3/13/2006

Release Number: 06-03-01CP

Description: BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - One U.S.
service member died today from injuries sustained when the humvee in which
he was riding rolled over during offensive operations in Torkham District,
Nangarhar Province .

Although the cause of the accident remains under
investigation, enemy activity was not a factor. The area received heavy
rains last night and the road on which the accident occurred may have been
weakened.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the comrades and
family of our fallen comrade," said Maj. Gen. Benjamin C. Freakley,
commanding general of the Coalition's Combined Joint Task Force - 76.
"Coalition partners and NGOs are involved in dozens of projects across this
country to improve existing roads and build new ones," he continued,
referring to nongovernmental organizations.

"Our loss today in this tragic accident steels our
resolve to make Afghanistan a safer place. I would like his family to know
they are in our prayers."

The injured service member was evacuated to a
medical facility at Bagram Airfield where he died upon arrival. The name of
the service member is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
