Finding a belt is the hard part, I'd think. I had a "wide" belt sander for
awhile, but couldn't find any wide belts to put on it. I made it out of a
treadmill someone threw away. It worked surprisingly well, but I didn't do
anything clever for belt changing, or tracking adjustments, and it was
tricky to use. One slip, and FLUP, there goes another belt shredding
itself to ribbons. Dang. It was expensive to operate for that reason.

Anyway, the basic concept works. Just needs refinment. Find a treadmill
someone is throwing away, get some wide belts to fit it, and go the extra
distance I didn't to come up with a quick change and reliable belt tracking
mechanism. I would probably scrap the frame entirely and build a new one
better suited for its new purpose. Find someone with a lathe if you don't
have one and turn some crowned rollers to improve tracking (duct tape over
straight rollers doesn't work, DAMHIKT). Take your cue from a commercial
model and allow belts to come off on one side with a spring-loaded
adjustable tensioner to allow for changes without having to readjust
everything every time...
