Pressing I on a thread will mark it as ignored and will not download
anymore headers but there is that ugly thing on your screen.
Create a view by clicking to the right of subject which will bring up
the view manager. Or you can navigate 'group', 'view messages',
'Manage Views....',
Click on Add, then give a name for view I used "not ignored", and
click on the 'not ignored' check box and then on 'ok'
Now run the view manager and put the filter in effect and get
temptation to reply behind ye.

I left one thing out, press 'F5' after 'I' if the ignore filter is
active. It refreshes display and makes the thread go away from view.
