Background:
My daughter was driving from Vermont to Virginia when she had a problem wit=
h
her brakes. At about 7PM she called me from Maryland and said she was about=
=20
2 hours from her destination. When she described the symptoms, I told her t=
hat=20
she should not continue driving "Get a hotel and find a shop in the morning=
."=20
Less than 3 hours later she called me again: "On my way to Virginia!"
Wait...What?
It turns out that Maryland has 24 hour service centers. Who knew? She calle=
d=20
one and they said if she came right over, they could work on it right away.=
=20
They fixed the problem and sent her on her way.
So, the point of this post is "Really? Auto repair shops that are open 24 h=
ours?"
Is that a big city thing only? We sure don't have them where I live. We did=
n't have them in NYC where I grew up, but that was 30+ years ago. I looked =
on line and it seems like NYC has them now. It's not surprising that the "T=
owing and Repair" businesses are listed as 24 hours, but there are quite a =
few that are just listed as auto repair shops.=20
Do you have 24 hour repair shops where you live?

Would a 24 hour truck shop replace rotors and pads on a 07 CR-V at 8PM?

It's been over 50 years since you could not buy gas 24 hours a day 7
days a week SOMEWHERE in both Kitchener and Waterloo Ontario.
A few stations used to rotate being open Sundays, and at least one at
each entrance to town was open 24 hours. "Self Serve" is virtually
universal here - with a manned booth where you can pay for gas, but
"pay at the pump" is also almost universally available.
Today I'd say 50% or more are 24 hour 7 day a week

It happened right outside of Baltimore. She only had about 1.5 hours to go
and she would have reached her destination - the Marine base at Quantico.
Once there she would have had access to the base auto shop, but I couldn't
chance letting her continue. As I suspected, it was a frozen caliper and it
had already destroyed the rotor.
She was on the way there with her girlfriend, whose father was retiring
after 25 years in the USMC.

That's probably the theory at Sam's too. But as they say; In theory,
reality and theory are the same. In reality, theory is something
completely different.

I called that 24 hour place in the residential neighborhood.
Female voice:
"Hi, you've reached Don's cell phone. Please leave your name and number and
he'll call you back with his availability."
No mention of the shop name or anything else.

At BJ's they have other functions:
- Prevent chaos by making sure vehicles follow the "one way" rules
- Help those that need help (elderly, frail, disabled, ignorant in the ways of the pump, etc.)
- Occasionally use their card at the pump when there's an issue with a member's card
- Perform other customer service related functions

I had already done the search you suggested prior to posting. Most of the
"24 hour" hits were shops that also tow. As I said in my OP, I would expect
those that offer towing to be listed as open 24 hours. I got a couple of hits
for "mobile mechanics" that were listed as 24 hours, but both websites are
dead.
I got some truck stops (food and fuel), some collision shops (my guess: an
answering service that tells the tow truck driver where to drop off the wreck)
and even a website that looks to be something like an Angie's List for auto
repair. You have to register to go any deeper than the home page and that
ain't happening.
There is one hit that seems like it might actually be a viable option. The
Google picture shows what appears to be a shop with some cars parked around
it behind a house in a residential neighborhood. I wouldn't be surprised if
owner lives in the house and answers his phone 24/7, throws on his coveralls
and walks into his backyard. Will he actually fix your brakes at 8PM like
AJ's in Maryland did for my daughter? Don't know. I may just call them
tomorrow and ask if they are truly open - and working - 24 hours. After all,
they are in a residential neighborhood and there are town codes that need to
be followed. Yeah, yeah, the true test would be to call them at 2AM and see
what happens, but I'll wait until normal business hours since it's just a
question, not a need for service.

Seems here are quite a few 24 hour servicers, here, but not sure just how e=
xtensive their services are. Several mobile mechanics, but, again, not su=
re how complete of services offered..... I didn't look at any websites, to=
read of services offered. Good to know something is available, though.

Costco is always $0.30 to $1.00/gal cheaper around here. That's $5 to $16 dollars
savings on a fillup (compared to the most expensive in the
neighborhood - granted those two stations are always $.50
higher than most of the rest.). Go before the warehouse opens and there
is seldom a line a the pumps (open 6a -> 9p, while the warehouse
is 10-8). My warehouse has 20 two-pump lanes that can accomodate
40 vehicles simulataneously
so there is no problem accomodating fuel door placement, just
choose the shortest line on the correct side of the pump
for your vehicle.

If you only buy gas, and the gas prices aren't substantially
less than non-costco gas, then why did you buy the membership in
the first place? Food, pharmacy alone easily pay for the membership.

It has only been a few months that McDonalds went to 24 hours. No gas
stations, let alone repairs in our town of 10k.

I never really thought about it for local shops but they are and have been
common along heavily traveled routes like I-95 since at least the late
1960s. As a test, Google for "24-hour auto repair near me" and see what you
find. I located at least a half dozen that appeared to be good bets and I
don't live in or near any sort of major metropolis.

No open pump unless an attendant is present. There are two stations
right at the highway exit that are closed at midnight. Nearest 24 hour
is about 10 miles north.

My BJ's solved that problem: No front pumps.
There is a single row of pumps with hoses on both sides. The hoses are long
enough to reach both sides of (most) vehicles so it doesn't matter which side
of the vehicle you fill up on.
The entry and exit lanes (the roadway perpendicular to the pumps) is way too
narrow to allow cars to come from both directions. A single car waiting to
come in from the other direction would block the roadway and no one would be
able to move.
As far as the stations that have front rows and allow access from both
sides, what happens when you are at the back pump, pumping that last half
gallon into your tank and a dually pickup with 2 empty 25 gallon tanks swings
in to the front pump? (yes, I'm exaggerating). If there is a vehicle behind
you, you're stuck until the dually is done filling his tanks. I hate when
that happens. ;-)

No attendants anywhere on site? That is different. The Sam's here has
to have an operator to pull the emergency switch if it all catches on
fire (they don't have any other function - all self-serve and no
cash).
>The small town in Indiana I lived in during college had a 24-hour BP. I

Most of the gas stations around here make their money from the crap
inside the store and don't even own the gas business. The major oil
companies own the gas, tanks, and pumps. They pay the station owner
to handle the non-pay-at-the-pump customers - and not much.

That can't happen at costco[*], they leave three lanes of space
between the islands, so the rear car can leave early, or the
next waiter can take the front pump before the rear pump
is finished.

up in the search as 24 hour service .. only evident if you

But what _is_ the population of, say, the county and how close to one of
the "heavily traveled routes" are you?
There's nothing remotely resembling that within at least 200 mi from
here and I pretty strongly suspect not even those have truly 24-hr
service more than, perhaps, a tire change (not repair, just change).
OTOH, the local JD dealership will respond 24/7 if you're that desperate
as to really need something up and running! :)

There's surely a pump, though, by now?
Wasn't until about two years ago the one in NM near our ground out there
finally put in a card reader; you had to catch him while he was there
before...of course, most times could just call and he'd come over if you
really needed fuel badly, but anybody driving through wouldn't have a
clue! :) --not that many drive that route but a few do to cut across to

The only places I know of still w/ mandatory Pump4U law are Oregon and
NJ altho Oregon finally relented for the lower half (roughly) of
counties by population beginning this year.
NM had no law against self-serve/just the station did so little volume
the owner didn't want the expense of putting in new pumps with card readers.
I think he finally relented when the distributor threatened to quit
making the trip unless he upped his volume and figured the pass-thrus
were the only added market there could be. With population of the
county seat village being 300, there's just not many extra folks around
to use any more than they already were... :)
The pumps were still open when we were out last spring for checking on
fences, etc., so at least so far the distributor has only threatened.

In large traffic area, not surprised; too many customers wouldn't have
the foggiest idea of what to do if.
Here in rural area there are many totally unattended fueling stations;
the emergency button is right there on the island with big sign if it
were needed and a contact number.
Some are on card readers so anybody w/ a CC _can_ use it, but many,
being co-ops or just distribution centers of a larger distributor only
have member keys or use combinations for their clients; they're not
general service stations at all; just have the same general function
where it may be 20-50 mi to a "real" service station.

I grossly over-estimated; Mosquero is only about 120 permanent residents
now; Roy is about 225; the whole county is ~650-700 over 2000 sq-mi.

Same with Costco.
I rarely get gas there, because there's always a line out the parking
lot. And why would I, anyway?
They have that stupid one-way line rule. The price is hardly ever lower
than any other gas station. They don't even have window washing
squeegees.
So, I'm basically paying a membership fee to wait in a long line for
poorer service.

Is that a state thingie or a local fire marshal showing off his power?
There are a number of 24-hr stations in town that are manned as they're
convenience store operations but the co-op and distributor pump islands
aren't cut off overnight so if you have the key/combination you can fuel
there at any time...the oilpatch companies and farmers would riot if not
able to, I'd think. :)
I've not checked at the smaller stations that do close whether they also
cut off the pumps or not; never thought to try to see.

I've never seen any problems at any of the regular gas stations around
here that allow 2-way access. Occasionally you'll see a landscape truck
and trailer clogging up a lane, but other than that people seem to know
how to navigate it so that all the empty pumps can be used.
At Costco, there are always pumps at the front not being used because A.
Soccer moms in behemoth SUVs park too far away from the pump to allow
anyone to go around them to use the front pump. B. Soccer moms in
behemoth SUVs or grannies are too afraid to use the center "lane" to
move ahead of cars to the front pumps, even though there's plenty of
room to do so.
So you end up with empty pumps that would otherwise be used if people
could pull in from the other side.

I'm not driving to Costo at 6am just so I don't have to wait in line
when there's a station 1/2 mile from my house that never has a line.
And like I said, around here, they are never any cheaper and sometimes
more than other station, like Kroger, where you actually do get a
discount for shopping there and they have 2-way lanes and window washing
squeegees.

Who said I only buy gas? I didn't.
The point is, you're paying a membership fee so things should be better
than places you don't pay a membership fee.
Same with their tire center. Discount Tire always ends up beating their
price and is always faster.
Their checkout lines are always long. It's the only place you have to
wait in line to get OUT of the store, when they check your receipts when
you're leaving.
We love Costco, don't get me wrong. Their return policy alone is worth
the fee. But they have some very quirky aspects that could really be
improved from a customer service standpoint.

Back many years ago, the pumps were left unlocked and everybody had a
running account book in the office they wrote down what they used.
There was a cash box for through traffic folks to leave their "donations".
When gas prices got high, unfortunately temptation (and outside
knowledge of availability) also grew and "shrinkage" got too high to be
able to continue tradition.

Yeah, I'm sure they do in highly-enough populated/traffic areas...out of
the metro Atlantic corridor and perhaps S Cal and similar areas I
suspect they're few and far between for the shops that are anything more
than minimal.
Your daughter was most lucky to have the incident where she was,
methinks...out here it might be a half-hour to even see a light
alongside the highway, what more a shop! :)

Half the time, they don't do it because a giant truck didn't leave
enough room or the person driving thinks their car is twice as wide as
it actually is and is afraid to go through the center lane.

Depends how busy they are, if you have the parts, and how hard up you
are. Likely depends how well you know the guy, or who you know - so I
can't say definitely yes or no - - - - At 8PM you could still find
partd here in Waterloo - less likely in Elmira

IL lets gas stations run without attendents. You pay at the pump with a
credit card and of course pump your own gas. I'd think if there were
problems they wouldn't be doing it for very long. (I bet the places that
won't let you pump your own gas for "safety" reasons are scared!)
The small town in Indiana I lived in during college had a 24-hour BP. I
don't know that they did much business but I guess enough to stay open.
