Some divorce to get coverage like the elderly couple across the street.
He suffered several debilitating strokes and required in home care
that she was unable to provide. Their choices were do divest themselves
of all assets or divorce leaving her with what assets they had. The
division of assets left his finances in a state able to qualify for
government coverage which also says loads about the state of things.

For seniors on medicare who need additional insurance, each must get
their own supplemental and drug (part D) policies. There are no family
policies unless you pay the really bucks for a non medicare related
policy and a provider will take you.

Don't really need algebra, just work in whole numbers (integers to you

In 2 hours both could do 3 rooms, thus 2/3 of an hour for one room *if*

IIRC, Mr. Guthrie said if you're smart enough to understand the problem
and show the work, he was certainly smart enough to deduce the variables
from the (con)text of the problem, and your answer.

It isn't a math problem. It's an English problem. I think a staged
problem as well. Nevertheless, it is a pitiful example of what humans can
do to other humans, on many levels.

Some marriages work, others apparently don't. And sometimes a couple
marries because one of the partners needs health insurance that's
unobtainable outside marriage. Which says loads about the state of
health insurance.

Of course. There is a young couple who in all likelihood eventually will
marry. One has medical insurance, the other doesn't or is about to lose
it. Should they marry now or later? Or any of similar situations. Such
as a couple of seniors. One with, one without (but with medical needs).

The problem is
A) is the question posed understandable?
B) is the listener really paying attention?
C) Is the context really conducive for correct interpretation?

Yea but it will still take at least four hours to properly prep the

I disagree to the point that math is needed, but to such a basic level
that any functioning adult in our North American educated society
should be able to solve the problem.
Since there was no mention of the person in question having any type
of learning disability, we have to assume a given level of
intelligence and comprehension. If that person has a given
understanding of English, then to converse with them on an acceptable
level, one has to also believe they are capable of at least a basic
mathematical understanding. Otherwise, we'd all be talking to people
as if they were functional morons.

You know, there's like 300,000,000 people in this country. That leaves
a lot of room at the extreme end of any bell curve you want to draw.
There's people who could have converted 80mph into mach numbers or
furlongs per fortnight without blinking an eye, and there's people who
just don't get math.
For all we know, she's a genius poet when not being given math problems

Clever technique. I note that the first person can paint a room at the
rate of 1 room per hour, and the second person can paint a room at the
rate of 1/2 room per hour, as Swingman did, and then add the rates and solve
t(1 + 1/2)= 1
for the time t.
As far as algebra goes, I think students regards that sort of problem is
in the *very hard* category! However, viewed in the right way, it's the
same as determining the distance apart of two cars driving in opposite
directions, which I think is much easier. That's why I don't quickly
"write off" the woman in the video. Giving her the benefit of the doubt,
she may just need a little nudge to jog her memory: d=rt and stuff like
that! : )

I don't think you are unique in that regard. There are 2 parts to the
problem: Model and solve. Much more variety is encountered in the first
part so it probably takes longer to build up confidence--at least that's
the way it was for me.

You forgot the 0. BTW, that reminds me, I picked up the 8-pc Forstner

Yep. It's all in how you frame the problem. In school, we were all
taught stupid formulas like 1/(1/t1 + 1/t2) or whatever, and when we were
taught that stuff, we all asked ourselves "howinthehell am I supposed
to memorize *that*?"
But it's a stupid way to teach the problem. The right way is to teach
the students to think about how to frame it.
Clearly, two people are working together, so *something* is being simply
added up. It's not the time involved, because that would add up to three
hours and we know that's not the right answer (unless the question was:
how long does it take the first person to paint the room and then the
second person paint it again.)
So what's really being added up are their rates of room painting.
The first person can paint 1 room/hour, and the second can paint .5
room/hour. Add them up and you get 1.5 room/hour. Now it's trivial to
find out how long it takes to paint one room at a rate of 1.5 room/hour.
And yes, that turns out to be 1/(1/t1+1/t2), but memorizing that equation
is *not* the way to solve this.

You're not supposed to memorize that. There's a lot that can be learned
from the problem if you give it a chance. Revisit it concentrated on
the units and rates being used. The consequence could have immeasurable
value--in fact, it's sure to.
If you finished that one, calculate the measure of the miter you need on
each piece to make an n-sided rectangular frame. Fun problem. If you
get someone to help you, and you calculate out how long it takes each of
you to paint one piece, you could calculate how long it would take you
to paint them all, working together! ; )

Given the stats that 80% of marriages will experience extramarital sex
by one or both parties, who cares? Screw marriage. It's overrated.
By age 18, I had seen enough of marriage not to want it, ever.

I am surprised she did not behead him.
He should not have broad cast that video but had she listened she might
have gotten the answer. I am not sure that any math was involved other
than repeating the same words in a different order.
Not totally unlike, if I switch the red balloon from my right hand to my
left hand what color will it be? ;~)
