DeWalt Comp Miter Saw

My DW705 12" Compound Miter saw died. The switch burned out. I
called the DW service center and they told me the switch had been
discontinued. My only option was trash the saw or bring it to them
(100 miles away) and get a credit for it on another saw.

Then I tried the online parts service. The part is no longer available.

I need another similar saw for occasional use. Serious suggestions?

Yeah, I had a 3 1/4hp freud router with the strangest switch it kind of roc=

DeWalt has service centers scattered all over the country and it wouldn't
surprise me if at least some of them still had the exact switch you need on
the shelf. Finding the right service center will probably be a bitch but it
can probably be done. I hope so since I have the same saw in the shop and
would hate to see it go obsolete over something so trivial.

In a similar vein, I am enough of an experimenter that I would likely try
buying a motor contactor/relay of sufficient capacity and with the needed
contact arrangement and replace the switch function with that and then
activate the contactor with a different type of switch at the trigger
location. That would probably be a bitch to do also but given a dead saw...

chances are any switch will work. See if you can find other similar
models from other vendors. Have you checked ereplacementparts.com,
sear.com or other site for spare parts?

option two, by pass the switch. ie: every time you plug it in it is on.

option three, wire a on / off switch to the power line some where and
by pass the bad switch. Maybe attach the new external switch near the
rear or top of the saw.

I had a similar problem with a Shop-Vac. The power switch was stuck on
"on" and the vac wouldn't turn off unless it was unplugged. Shop-Vac
doesn't provide the switch and wants to sell you a new power head for $85.

I found a compatible mini rocker switch at:

http://tubesandmore.com/

for less than $5 including tax. Works great.

Not sure what type of switch you have in the CMS, but you might find
something that works. Is it's a rocker switch, most are the same
physical size depending on mini or regular.

What is this fascination with providing crappy switches for power tools. I
have had a number of switch failures. It wasn't always practical to replace
them. But I have found replacement switches and replaced the faulty one.
And on a couple occasions, I even wired up a box with a much more
substantial switch. Because the original was so poor or unstable, any
replacement would have led to another failure.

Reminds me of the time I had to get rid of several office chairs. Closely
observing each chair, I found that there was an incredible variation in
quality. These things are obviously assembled from different parts of very
different quality. some of those components are good for a hundred years.
Others will fail within a year. Obviously the crappy components are what
led to the chair getting discarded. And also, quite obviously, no parts are
available to repair the chair.

Do they go out of their way to put crappy parts in a product? It seems to
me, being logical and rational, if you are going to make a product that is
mostly quality parts, why put crap in there too? Obviously I don't have a
MBA.

It's not uncommon to find momentary switches with NC (normally closed)
and NO (Normally Open) contacts. Sounds like that's the kind of switch
that's used.

Probably the hardest part of replacing the switch is going to be finding
one that fits and has the correct ratings.

The switch Closes one pair of contacts when the handle is squeezed,
When released These contacts open and another pair are closed. Seems
that this controls the electric brake on this model as well as the
motor. Another switch would require turning something loose in order
to stop the motor. Probably not safe in some circumstances.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

There should be a similar switch somewhere. If not check digikey for a
switch that might work. You can always mount a momentary button switch
where that switch should exist, and make a wooden trigger. Drill the
trigger out with a hole to accept the end of the momentary switch and
glue them together. Done.

Keep in mind that if you us an external alternate switch, your

That's why you think normally. You don't have an MBA. Somehow the severe
decline in our status came as a result of MBA's. Everything was numbers
to them, but they missed a couple of pieces of the equation.

Perception
Long term impact
What those economical decisions cost long term.

I have been outsourced over and over because of those decisions (IT).

One of my former Indian co-workers thinks Americans are stupid. He says
in his country they would not give Americans jobs, they give them to
their own people first. In America you give jobs to us Indians, and not
to yourselves he says.

I knew that, but the MBA's see it as a way of lowering the cost.
I am being told by unemployment that I should become an electrician,
carpenter or plumber. Hmmmm. Lets see, start out making nothing and
gently graduate to a living after going through the apprentice programs.
Why not just stop giving jobs to H1Bs and give jobs to us Americans?

What do you say to that MBA??? We can't buy the products if you put us
out of work.

I have no respect for MBA's or Politicians. Both SUCK!!!
