I have run across an outstanding condition Delta 6x48 Belt sander with
enclosed stand and mobile base for sale.
Machine runs and looks like new and is ~5 years old.
Seller wants $700 for the unit. It has come from a deceased person's
wood shop and is part of an estate.
The current model seems to sell for $1250. This unit looks identical
to the current model that Delta sells.
Is $700 a good and fair price?

I would go with the other guys. Accept the fact its not a bad deal but see
if its negotiable (with out offending the other dude):)

Ultimately, it boils down to 1) a cost-benefit analysis, or 2) how much
you would like to have this machine. In other words, if it will make
your life easier doing needed chores and you can afford it, buy it. Or
if you really would like to have it, you have a use for it, and you can
afford it, buy it. The $700 price is fine. Perhaps offer a bit less
and negociate.

Half the price of new for a piece of equipment in "average" condition is a
fair price.
If the piece is exceptional or as you state "like new", then it should bring
a bit more. Perhaps as high as 75% - 80% of new price if it is in pristine
condition.
700 bucks is a deal for a sander of this quality. If you can haggle the
price down a bit, its even sweeter.
