OT: Mack Lawn Mowers

Sorry for the off topic post, but I was just doing my usually runs through
the local Borgs and at Menards I saw a "Mack" (as in Mack Truck - a blue
mower with the "Mack" logo -- dog and all) brand lawn mower on clearance for
$200 -- regularly $450.

Anyway, Does anyone here know anything about "Mack" mowers or own one who
can speak on the quality of this machine? parts? are blades standard and
easy to get for it... etc. If I recall it's a 6.5HP Briggs & Stratton
motor... so its got a good motor on it...

I would appreciate any knowledge on this I can get -- I've tried googling it
up and can't seem to find anything.

The Scott's brand of riding mowers sold by HD for several years were
really built by John Deere. They couldn't be sold under the JD label
because JD had dealership arrangements in most of the markets where Home
Depot was doing business, so the solution was to manufacture orange John
Deeres. Apparently JD must have reneged or expired all of those
dealership arrangements, HD is now selling properly John Deere green
tractors.

You probably won't find anything. It's likely made by MTD or Murray under
license. A few years ago, Stanley licensed their name for a similar line. Don't
know if that's still out there or not. It has become common practice for
companies doing nicely in one field to license their name for items in other
fields. Stanley licensed their garage door opener line to another company a few
years ago, but that company went belly up, so there are no more Stanley GDOs
being made.

I keep expecting to see a Wendy's bandsaw.

I have recently seen a few items other than big trucks with the MACK name &
logo and in very fine print - name and logo licensed from Mack.
I think the items were a flashlight and a leatherman clone.

It is a version diversification.

I just did a Google and found:

"Volvo Trucks has purchased Renault's Mack truck division."

Is nothing sacred?

Hasn't Mack been bought by Renault? Or the reverse?
May be the reason?

Go the extra money and buy a Honda. Then don't think about another mower
for the next 20 or so years.

Well, I did a little more research and found that the Mack mower is really
an Ariens "LM 21" model #911400. I haven't used a pure-bred "Ariens" before
but have heard good things about them. I have, however, used their Gravely
line which are awesome machines. So I went ahead and purchased the Mack for
$200. Unfortunately, we got our first accumulation of snow for the year
this morning so I can't even take it out for a test run... I guess I won't
really know until next spring.

It didn't come with an owners manual and the customer service number
(1-866-622-5633) is no longer in service... but once I found Ariens number
(920-756-2141) I gave them a call and the service was excellent. They're
sending me the owners manual and parts manual for free. Later I noticed
that you can view the parts manuals online for free through their "Parts
Radar" on their website at www.ariens.com

I've got my fingers crossed... but I'm feeling pretty good about it and
hoping it proves to be a sleeper gloat. We'll see...

p.s. - I have no affiliation with Ariens, I'm just supplying information for
anyone else who may have purchased or are considering purchasing this mower
and finding little or no information on "Mack" branded mowers.

I haven't used one personally, but I'm always reading about and looking at
mowers. Ariens models give me the impression of being very sturdy and solid,
but rather crude. Excellent for the price, by the way. It should last forever.

They're the most storied brand in snowblowers. I was given one from 1963 (now
that's a gloat) and it's like new internally, plus are parts are still
available cheaply. I'm selling my 8-year-old used-once (another free find,
gloat-gloat) Noma/Murray now that I have the ancient Ariens.
