Spencers Loggers Tape

Have you seen one? Thought it might be useful on the job, if you still
do this kind'a thing.

I have seen them on TV, most recently on the show "Ax Men", a show about lo=
ggers. Never seen one in person. When I have something large to measure o=
r layout, I have a steel bladed Milwaukee model I use that is in a steel fr=
ame with rubber corners as armor.

That's a true logger's tape, made to have the crap beat out of it all day l=
ong. Hopefully I wouldn't be the one using it....!

This seems like much ado about little, to me.

It's clear that someone manufacturing tape measures will design one that will
satisfy the most customers, and one may assume they've done the market
research to justify inclusion of 1/32 marks on the tape - which is the
opposite of 'damn dumb'.

Personally, I use an icra or starrett rule for all my woodworking and leave the tape
measures (four 25' stanleys) for construction or general measurement usage.

"Useless 1/32 crap" is a value judgement that is not universal when applied
to measurement devices.

Sometimes I need more stickout when going to measure something. Would
popping one of those "purple pills" into the tape measure help?

Not sure what you are looking for I guess, you mentioned that you wanted
a tape measure that has a resolution of 1/16" and no higher.

Here is my FascCap Green measure.

I have a pair of white tennies for the gym, an "identical" pair of
black that I wear for work, and another "identical" gray suede pair
that I wear on the weekend. My feet are a hard fit. ;-)

But I mostly only use a tape measure to double check a previously laid

I don't know why everybody calls it the "purple pill". The _purple_ pill
is an antacid, the one that makes things woody is _blue_.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the "white" FastCap tape measure.
Totally flat and pretty much worthless unless you are measuring the
surface of an arc or if you are measuring a horizontal surface.
It's stand off is about 1". ;-)

Exactly, I do not like the fat cases and as I mentioned in another post,
that is all to do with stand off. The tape has to be wider to accept
enough bend to extend 16+feet with out support. If you want a narrow
tape measure you have to look at 12' and under, typically.

That's a harsh value judgement, indeed. One might consider that
if one were to use every other mark on such measuring devices, one
could easily get precision to 1/16th of an inch.

Some people are really really really really really good at reading marks
quickly. ;~)

I would be willing to bet the numbers are in the center. If the "1" was
in the center it would be covered up by the magnetic hook.

Something to watch out for, you probably already know this, the curve in
the blade for the stand off tends to make it difficult to mark
accurately and not tip the measure case or hook. I personally want the
least stand off for building furniture and cabinets. It is a trade off.

To tell you the truth I don't really notice the numbers. I only look at
the marks, much faster. IOW I don't find them to be in the way.

And FWIW I have had a few wear out over the years, an e-mail indicating
so and they ask for an address to send you a replacement. So far they
have not wanted the broken one back.

Have you heard of FastCap? They have several style tape measures. You
want to look at the green one, it is on 1/16" increments on both sides
and reads left to right and right to left and labels each marking if you
are not proficient reading a tape measure.

Nice looking tape for builders. I'm not a builder, but I'd think if one

I'd like to find anyone that makes a nice tape for cabinet makers?
Lots of decent short tapes (12' or less) but they ALL have the first
foot or so marked in 32's which is stupid. I want the whole tape,
especially the first foot or so in 1/16's. Don't want 1/64's or 1/32's
anywhere on the tape. If anyone knows of such let me know.

BTW, last I checked my Stanley tapes all measured the same. Other tapes
were all over the place.

Not near harsh enough. After using tapes for 60 years and never ever
once needing 1/32 markings I have zero need for having the marks gum up
the first foot or so of the tape. When I was young, my eyes had trouble
with those useless markings. Now that I'm old, they are really annoying.
I would need a magnifying glass to use every other mark as you suggest.

One thing for sure, I don't need you making harsh value judgements for me...

Not only heard of them, I own the old standby 16' but it has the 1/32"
marking on the first foot. I don't see any on their page that shows the
style I want, and the "Green one" is "standard reverse" with nothing
readable from the looks of it. The Old Standby is advertised as large,
readable letters, which is good, except for the first foot where the
1/32" lines are unreadable by my eyes, and never needed.

You would think they would be common, particularly in short, cabinet
shop tapes.

The Stanley's have 1/32" markings. The Komelon looks promising, but, it
only has markings on one side of the tape. What's up with that? I'd
like markings on both sides, like most all tapes have, but I want no
1/32 markings anywhere. Pretty sure my 25' and 30' tapes are like this,
but not the short ones I use in my shop.

My eyes are getting to the point where it is very annoying, as well.

But there are other reasons those marks are pretty pointless on a
standard tape measure.
1. If you're doing work requiring that kind of precision (real
precision, not "Hey, I got lucky!" precision), then you need to be using
a rule with a stop, not a tape.

2. You can put a tick mark perfectly in the center of two 16th lines on
a tape just as easily as you can on a 32nd line.

3. There's at least a 32" of slop in the hook of the average tape
measure anyway. The hooks get bent in and out or twisted. The slots
get sloppy and don't always catch at the same place. If you are
measuring a decent distance and aren't perfectly perpendicular to the
edge, you add distance, or you end up on the bent side of the hook.
etc, etc, etc.

I had one of those and I only lasted about an hour with it.
I "thought" the printed "1/8-1/4-3/8-etc" markings would be convenient,
but man, it was just the opposite for me.

The printing just confused the heck out of my brain. My mind has been
trained for 35 years to know what the fraction is by recognizing the
standard lines and heights of the different ones. So when I see that
AND the printed fractions, it actually slowed me down. TOO much
information. :-)

I took it back.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Couldn't see that from their web
page. There, those measurements looked closer together (on my screen)
than the Old Standby, but were too blurry to see. The old standby was
clear as a bell in their photo.

Thanks for that, I'll have to get me one of those. Not sure I want all
the extra numbering and would love it in a 10 or 12' rule, but this
should do just fine. Do you like all the extra numbering?

That's what I was thinking. You would think someone would just make a
simple (short) rule with just 1/16th measurements. How hard could that
be, and why on earth do tape makers not know this?

I sent an email to Stanley on this very subject. Lady sent an email
back pointing me to one of their tapes on their web page. The tape had
1/32 measurement you could see. Sent me to another, and it was a 25'
tape. This went back and fourth several times until she admitted they
didn't make such a thing.

I suggested they should as it would be popular with about all cabinet
makers as the 1/32 measurements were nothing but a PIA, and basically
useless. She (Charla) gave me an address for development or something
which I promptly sent a suggestion.

Thanks, will do that. Couldn't tell much from their photo's, but will
definitely check them out. I saw that one had the actual fractions
marked like the Fastcap tapes. Not sure I want that but if they have a
12 footer with nothing smaller than 1/16th inch markings, on both sides,
I'm in for yet one more tape for my giant collection:-)

One of the tapes pictured seemed to have no numbers other than at the 1
inch line. What's up with that?

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/515OFzPO4RL._SL1000_.jpg

Personally, I like my Stanley short tapes the best, for overall feel and
all that. Unfortunately, they seem too damn dumb to eliminate the
useless 1/32 crap. I like my Fastcap 16' except for it's a bit too long
for a cabinet shop, and the strong ass spring. Like to chop off a
finger when that thing retracts.

I bought the combo pack of those Milwaukees when they first came out and
I don't like them. While the magnetic tip is nice (strong!) it can be a
PITA when you *don't* need it.

The hook bends too easily and the two "bat ear" ones can end up being
one forward and one back which can really screw up measurements
depending on how the tape is oriented for each measurement. It's been
relegated to being my "go to" metal object receiver when I drop a nut or
screw and it bounces down under the bench or table saw. :-)

One thing I don't like about all these new tapes, overall, is how fat
they are getting with all the superfluous trim on them. It's like
they're trying to make monster trucks out of tape measures. I can't find
a one that will slip in and out of the tape holster on my tool belt.

Except that Fastcap seems to be in the market of making many different,
specialty tapes for people with different, quirky needs. They seem to
like satisfying the most customers by producing the most, different tape
measures.

It's also rhetorical hyperbole which is perfectly acceptable in casual
conversation between like-minded people sharing their opinions on
different subjects.... which is exactly what we're doing here.

LOL. You would think people posting pictures of a product would take
pictures that show off the product. This goes for the above tape, but
also the FastCap tape you mentioned that has a blurry photo of the tape
you recommended to me.

Yes, one of several reasons I prefer short tapes in my shop, one of
course is smaller tape to lug around and handle, but also the longer the
tape, the more curve so the tape doesn't buckle when extended. Handy for
outside carpenters building houses and sheds, just a nuisance in my
cabinet shop.

Sweet. I'm definitely going for the Klien with 1/8th inch markings. I
was going to say I'd like that, but considering the trouble I had (you
didn't) finding one without 1/32nd markings I'm thrilled. (Tingle
running up my leg, just like a liberal) Mike said he can easily judge
halfway between 1/16th marks, I think I can do it between 1/8th inch
marks. I could swear I looked at Kliens before with no luck, guess I
didn't.

Also liked the Milwaukee with the 1/16th markings...

Thanks, you da man, and made an old man happy (tingly)

That's just a value judgement by you, certainly not a universal one.

Wrong again. Walt found two manufacturers that make the tapes I want,
albiet in 16' lengths rather than 10 or 12, so you can assume they did
the market research to justify elimination of the useless 1/32 marks.

> Personally, I use an icra or starrett rule for all my woodworking and leave the tape

Personally I don't, but soon will be using a Klien with 1/8th in markings.

Never once said it was "universal". It is _my_ value judgement based on
_my_ 60 years of experience. You are entitled to your own value
judgements, and you can be certain your value judgments are not
universal if that's what you're claiming.

Anyway, turns out my "value judgements" are popular enough that at least
two manufacturers make what I want, probably more.

And, they always seem to have 1/32 markings in the first foot. My 16
footers are ok, but a bit too big for my tastes. Seems all the tapes
mentioned here with no 1/32 markings are 16 footers. I think I'm going
with the Klien with 1/8th inch markings. Don't build much anymore, but
think I'll buy one just to reward them for knowing what cabinet makers
need.

BTW, you mentioned you only use tapes to check your measurements, or
something like that. What do you initially measure with if not a tape?

Thanks Mike, good to know. I've almost given up on finding anything I
drop on the floor. I once dropped a 10mm socket and after minutes,
hours, weeks and months of looking EVERYWHERE, it is gone. I kept
looking EVERYWHERE because it is impossible for something to disappear,
or so I thought. I figured it would eventually show up, but 2 years
later and so far, nada. Didn't fall into piles of rubble either, clean,
concrete floor.
