OT: Popular Woodworking Mail

I just opened mail from Popular Woodworking magazine.
Realizing it was an offer, I was thinking of just throwing it away
without looking since my reading stack is growing faster than I can
keep up, and I had to thin the heard. But I thought, let's see what
they have to say...

Okay,

You pay only: $15.96*
Mmm.. that's pretty good, let's see... hmm 2 years, 14 issues..(quick
mental calculation), okay.

Oh, the "*", looking further down, in a significantly smaller font,
" * Plus $2 Shipping and Handling".
Well, I don't expect to see S&H on a magazine price, but okay, it's
still not a bad deal.

Oh and they want to send me an electronic gift ("Free Info about Roy
Underhill's Woodwright's School").. Okay, I figure I know almost as much
about St. Roy and his school as they do, but I'd enjoy looking at the
pictures.

Oh, but they need my email address to send me my "free (digital) gift"
(above)--PLUS, "We will send you a FREE e-newsletter and special offers"!

They can have their S&H and I'll do my R&T ("Rip & Toss)!

I know tht magazine business is a tough one, but I don't like the feel
of this.

I pay 4 times as much per issue for 2 other magazines that I am
subscribed to; the price didn't rattle me as much as the "deceptive"(?)
advertising". YMMV.

Recently shipped a package from one town to another. Postal was going
to be about $20 and it had to be taken to the post office and since it
was rural it would have to be picked up at the receiving end post
orifice also. FedEx picked the parcel up, at home and delivered it to
home, the next day for $12.01, including taxes. (13%)

OTOH: bringing packages across the border via FedEx or UPS is a
completely different beast. To collect the taxes they want bond fees
and a $20 item can net you $35 bond fees on top of the $2.60 taxes they
collect.

Don't blame the post office - it's the H part of S&H that you're really
paying for. Look to your favorite vendor to cast blame on those costs.

Your extremely cheap rates are obviously subsidized by your tax money.
Canada made their Postal service a Crown Corporation (stands on it's
own two feet) and their rates have gone ten-fold of those rates.

I am saying that the uncontrolled spending is nothing new. You are
just
now hearing about it I guess. I remember when first class postage was
2
cents and the letter carriers walked to every house. In the last 15
years I have not noticed quite as significant of an increase in
shipping
as in first class postage offered by the post office. I seriously
doubt
that bulk rate shipping by the post office has gone up that much
recently.

And if you think it is all the PO raising their rates consider
companies
that charge you s&H by the dollar amount vs by weight.
A 4oz. item that you pay $200 for costs you $8.95 S&H. A one pound
item
that costs you $25 costs you $4.95 S&H.

I created an e-mail address just for those types of offers.

For nosy companies that ask for your phone number, you could try this:
http://www.rejectionline.com/ (I don't know if it's within their TOS, but
maybe something similar is. I'd be happy with a recording that said "You
don't need to be calling your customer, leave them alone.")

If it makes you feel any better I let my subscription expire, I tried it
for $10 and felt after the second issue that I had paid too much. I
literally never laid the magazine down to read later. I thumbed through
it as I walked in the door coming from the mail box and tossed in to the
trash.

And believe it or not the e-mail special offers for me turned out to be
their news letter riddled with non woodworking ads. IIRC they were adds
pushing something like Viagra and or condoms.

Exactly, regular first class mail has not increased that much and first
class is a premium priced service compared to bulk rates.

No, I'm continuing to hear about it and continuing to scream about it,
especially when people go fatalistic/denialist/indifferent about the
problem. The USPS isn't gov't, per se, but they're acting just like
them. I think it's time to privatize.

It went way down when they took the opportunity to raise their rates
above the new higher rates UPS posted after the union (not the
members) voted the raises a few years ago. USPS had it sewn up with
the lower rates (PM lower than UPS ground) but after UPS did it, FedEX
and USPS raised theirs.

I usually don't buy anything from companies who price like that. Lee
Valley is one which I do continue to buy from, but only when they
offer free shipping. I miss the days of the lower valued Canuckistani
Ducat. 0.7:1 was my favorite time to buy LVT.

Yes, I'm not surprised at the price increase--just at the effort to hide
it (behind a footnote). FWW is comparatively very upfront about their
$35 subscription price. And, I ordered a magazine from England just
recently--paying in pounds (for my first time)! Their advertising wasn't
"deceptive" like PWW's either! ; )

I was surprised to learn I can use credit cards to pay in foreign
currencies. FYI, One says they don't have a fee, and another says they
charge an extra 3%, beyond the exhange rate, in accordance with the day
the charge goes through--not when the transaction is made. I found this
interesting to know/learn. Cheers!

you can pay with paypal in a non-US currency too. they do charge the
conversion rate + 3% though.

there are certain US credit cards that don't charge the extra 3%. i have
one from chase called INK that doesn't.

Interesting site. I actually did create a new email address the other
day to use on craigslist.

I think what got my attention here was their lack of tact in allowing me
to see that I was just another "advertisee". There wasn't even a "Do
you want to receive special offers?" box to check. Who knows, maybe
someone at the magazine looks up what people are writing about it?

Yes, as a previously subscriber too, I had similar experience. But for a
buck an issue, one can hope to look forward to seeing improvement and
finding something useful! After all, we want to support WW... If it's
"survival of the fittest", the days may be numbered for PWW.

Bullshit, guys. The USPS has been throwing away money by the
truckloads. Look into their purchases of homes for postmasters, some
in the millions of dollars. Look into their purchase of million-
dollar-a-minute ads on the freakin' SUPER BOWL. Look at the high
wages and bennies the drivers get. And all that is just breaking the
skin on the problem.

Let's do a complete review of the USPS books before they're allowed to
give themselves yet another raise.

The mag seems to be targeted toward old guys who recently retired and
are optimistically tooling up to supplement their retirement income with
woodworking.

Yeah, right!

(my apologies to other old guys ... just a general observation, there is
nothing wrong with being an optimist, I'm married to one) :)

I received a mini-Prevention mag in the newspaper yesterday. The scam
was $13.96 for a year. Oh, plus $4.97 for s/h.

I paid $10 for 3 years of TFH an $11.97 for a year of PopWood. They're
asking $16-20 for renewals. I much prefer the limited ads in there,
but I haven't appreciated the projects as much as I'd hoped.
I don't know if I'll renew this year.
