I just ran down to the local BORG and took advantage of the 20% off
sale (to go with $30 PC rebate) to buy a Porter Cable 557 plate
joiner. They only had one left on the shelf and no others in stock. I
bought the one and didn't think to open the case and look at it in the
store, just wanted to get out of the store as I can't stand crowds.
Upon opening the case at home I discovered that inside the case there
was sawdust (looks like particle board) and the tool obviously has
been used judging by the fine coat of sawdust around the blade area.
Is this from testing done by the manufacturer or did someone in the
store decide to use it? I'm wondering if I should hassle with
returning this one and wait for a replacement or just not worry about
it and go ahead and use the tool. Anyone else have the experience of
sawdust inside the case of this tool when purchased new?
Dale
I had that exact problem TWICE lately. Once was even with that exact plate
joiner. I had also gotten a Bosch jigsaw. The jigsaw was even worse, as it
had a blade installed AND 2 packs of blades in the case (one already
opened). I kept the blades and returned both tools and repurchased ones
with their cases still factory sealed.

Return it. It should be sold as a "reconditioned" tool, not a brand
new tool.
scrooge? I'm not a HD manager. I'm merely giving you a little insight
into how business works. the idea is to thwart the dishonest folks
without pissing off the honest people. giving a 40% discount to
everyone who claims an item was used would result in rampant cheating,
and guess who pays for that, and "shrinkage" my friend?? You and me.
The store is under no moral or legal obligation to do anything beyond
providing a replacement item.

There are customers who buy a tool, use it, and return it,
taking care to make the packaging appear unopened. I have seen too
much of that in the past seven years working in a tool corral.

same thing used to happen with stores that sold typewriters. folks
would buy typewriters for resumes and term papers and then return them
to the store with some excuse about not liking it and then getting a
full refund as soon as their "one of" project was complete. I heard
about that from a local electronics store employee.

that's why some refer to Home Depot as THE Tool Rental Store.

Dave,
On a side note, do you remember the yellow sheet of paper that
came with the 733? It stated that sawdust was normal,a s they
factory test them before shipment.
I can only imagine how many came back before they started sticking
that yellow paper in there.

It's called free rental.
People did this to my buddy's musical instrument and equipment store
all the time. They would buy something like a wireless transmitter
for that special showcase gig, and return it on Monday. This practice
is also why the bicycle shop I work at part time will not accept a
return on a bike You can swap it for a different one, but we won't
take it back. We had college students doing this when they'd come to
town for two to three week summer courses.
I know some local tool dealers that operate with a similar policy.
Used tools can be exchanged for the same tool, the same tool in a
different brand, or a slightly different tool in the same family (like
a palm sander for a small ROS). This forces the free rental folks to
deal with the BORGs.

Last year, during HD's yellow tag sale, I saw a Bosch ROS that was about 30%
off. Needing one, I snagged the only one they had. The box was ripped and
it was obviously used (the used sandpaper attached to it clued me in). I
talked to the toll dept. manager. We plugged it and made sure it worked and
then I asked them how much additional they were going to take off because it
was used. Without hesitation, she dropped another 20% off the price. So,
it doesn't hurt to ask.

Mine was absolutely pristine when I opened the case. No dust anywhere.
Most likely, someone bought it, used it, and returned it for a refund. No way
would I accept that.

How come we choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?
My 557 was pristine from the BORG a year or so ago. The bummer is that yours
was the last one, so it's decision time.
After finding items missing out of supposedly unopened boxes far too many
times at the BORGs, (HVLP sprayer comes immediately to mind), I routinely
make a salesperson open the box and inventory the items BEFORE I head for
the one on duty cashier. The same *ssholes that cut you off in traffic and
routinely run red lights and stop signs these days see nothing wrong with
helping themselves to parts out boxes.
They, along with the designers of "tear here" and plastic
bubble-on-cardboard packaging, should have a special place in hell.

My 557 was clean, but I've gotten well used Freud Forstner bits from HD.
They aren't that expensive, but some lowlife has to use one and then
return it for a refund and it get put back on the shelf.

it shouldn't be that tough.
be glad your return isn't being handled by Amazon. I'm into an hour,
plus, of my time trying to get a return label for an item that arrived
broken. called amazon and whoopee, the item is no longer available.
customer service gal tells me I should get an email with a label I can
print for UPS to pick up the package for return shipment. No email.
make another call to amazon and this time the guy says he'll send one by
snail mail, after Christmas. So now I get to search the local stores
for a duplicate item and pay about $15 more, to boot! Thank you, Amazon
for not packing the item properly!
rant off!

Dale,
Just bought one yesterday from HD. After reading your post, I checked mine
(even though it is suppose to be a Christmas present) and found that the
cardboard cover over the plastic case is connected to the case with a
plastic cable tie. It looks like it is supposed to be sealed this way. I
decided not to open it any further!

why should the manager give 40% off when he can just send it back to
PC?? Every customer could pull that one: claim an item had been used
and DEMAND a huge discount. Retailers aren't that naive.

What really pisses me off from the service side of things is when a customer
brings the same tool (or so he claims) back again for repair a short time
later claiming it has not been working properly since the previous
repair.....here is the hard part....me being a gentle non confrontable kinda
guy......different serial # to previous repair or type 1 this time type 2
last time, who are they trying to con?? we keep all the info on file for
three years.
The best try was when a customer had brushes & switch replaced & cord
rewired in an Electric brake type DeWalt saw, returned it three days later
claiming the switch was faulty.... type & serial # was right so under
warranty right???
Wrong, this smart bastard had re-opened the saw & robbed the new switch
replacing it with an old worn out non-electric brake switch from another
model.
When I called him on this he swore blind he had not done this.....pointing
out the differences between the two types of switch to him he then stammered
"one of the guys I had helping me on a job last week must have done it"
Fixed it up for him that same day & added $10 to the bill for time
wasting.....I wonder if he managed to get his other saws switch replaced???

After posting my message this morning I called the Home Depot where I
bought the joiner and asked for the Tool Corral. The man who answered
is actually someone who is on the ball as I recognized his voice from
having spoken to him in the store. I wanted to see if they had another
joiner in stock that may not have been on the shelf or in their
overhead storage but sure enough the one I bought was the very last
one in the store. After reading the posts here I now know that there
should have been a zip tie of some sort around the cardboard outer
wrapper and the plastic case (there wasn't on the one I bought).
Looking at the box now I can see where one should have been. Since
others here have posted that their's were pristine coming out of the
box I have to assume that this was a return that was put back on the
shelf or that someone in the store was playing around with it. I don't
want to take any chances with my new baby. The store has some on order
and if that order is filled they should arrive on the 27th so I will
return this one for an unopened one hopefully within a week. I can
only pray that it will be as easy as going to customer service and
exchanging it without having the spend excess amounts of time or
having to talk to ten people to get the problem fixed. My blood
pressure has a tendency to rise when dealing with the BORG. Thanks for
all the feedback. Happy Holidays.

Keep the joiner go back and demand a reasonable discount and the same
warranty, have the manager sign your sales slip that he sold you a used
tool.If he doesn't want to comply ask for a new one. I'd settle for 40% off

who said they were naive, but they're not all are as accusing as you Dave
there are store managers who are willing to negotiate, perhaps I was a little
to stern on the demand thingy. You did here one guy get a rebate for used
equipment,don't be a scrooge. It's Christmas Ebenezer :)

Might be a new tool or could be a resealed box. The store have a gizmo. that
is used
to wrap plastic strapping zip-ties around boxes for security purposes. I
bought a rotozip
as a birthday present "sealed". When opened bits gone and had been used.

Perhaps -- but how does that differ from the status quo? The Borgs accept
returns unquestioningly, maybe don't even check to see if the tool has been
used, maybe don't care. The result is rampant cheating.

How come we choose from just two people to run for president and 50 for Miss America?
even a "reconditioned" tool wouldn't have sawdust all over it. It
should be like new, but it has been returned to the factory for
inspection and/or repair and then sent back into the retail market with
a "reconditioned" designation.
