Home Depot Sucks

I hope I'm not breaking the rules of this group, but I'm working on a
new website called www.homedeephell.com which is newly opened and I
was hoping on getting some Home Depot horror stories from people in
this group to get the forum rolling.

You can go to the site and post them, or post them here (let me know
if it's ok to copy the story over), and I'll come back and get them
(if any?).

Thanks a lot. I know "advertising" is a no-no on Usenet, but this is
strictly non-profit and evolved strictly for my desire to share my
hate of the big orange hell hole with others who feel the same.

Yowza! I didn't mean to get everyones feathers ruffled. The only
reason I brought it up was because I searched through the
rec.woodworking archives and found quite a few subscribers who had
similar negative experiences involving HD. Judging from the response
I've received on the website, I'd say that this is still the case.

If I offended anyone, I apologize. The fact of the matter is the Home
Depot's in the Bay Area are flat out awful in my opinion. I've filled
out endless comment cards with my name and address, and they do
nothing. I honestly wish we had them as nice as the ones you all have
access to.

Your site says "there are MANY people like myself who just feel the intense
need to VENT!" Can't they just vent without needing to have it on a web
site?

If not, then I'm all for doing my part to help them. I've been able to get
through the emotional anguish these situations have caused me, but hopefully
I can help others through the telling of my stories.

After looking through a myriad of ________(fill in blank with pipe fittings,
electrical parts, nuts/bolts, etc) and after finally finding the right part
I find out they're out of stock. To compound it, of course there is a box
in the spot but it's the wrong box. I put the box in the aisle so a stocker
will be able to figure it out. Next week the wrong box is back in the spot.

I use the self-checkout because it's the only checkout without a huge line
and every other item needs an employee to assist. Why can't the employee
just do the whole thing?

They won't let me look at the small tools anymore (chisels, screwdrivers,
etc) because they've put them behind a long employee-only counter.

When I don't need help I have to say Hi to 15 people. When I need help I
have to walk around for 15 minutes looking for someone to help me.

Sam, I pray these stories can help at least one person in dealing with their
own emotional healing.

Sorry Larry...I totally missed the sarcasm (it was late).

Truth be told, I don't much enjoy the HD experience but when economics
dictates it, I grit my teeth and do it. Key is to know exactly what I need,
get out of the house early (NY'ers tend to "lounge" on the weekends), get
the goods and get outta there.

If I had a single bitch to make on the place, it is the sloppy pricing of
merchandise. There seem to be more and more items where the price is not to
be found until you get to the register. Probably against the law in NY but
I am new to the area and don't plan on sticking around long enough to learn
about such things so I either accept or reject at the "finish line".

True, but your creating a www.HDReallySux.com takes consumer annoyance to a
level most of us are not comfortable with. <g>.

It's something I might have done when I graduated from college in 1982. ;-)
But I have learned there are better ways:
- I was able to "plea bargain" my way out of a differential equation
final exam.
- Via negotiation, I received full passing credit for an English course
in college I never finished.
- I have returned opened software to computer superstores, explaining to
a sufficiently-high manager the delta between the product's claims and my
experiences with said product.

I haven't had a problem at HD I wasn't able to solve. If I had a problem
that couldn't be solved by the local management, I have no doubt I could
take it up the chain of command and get satisfaction. (Rule #1: Always
talk about the other guy's benefits.)

Vent all you want. Most of the complaints seem to stem from the fact that
they are busy places. Follow that to the reason why. If you know what you
are doing and what you need and don't have to rely on advice from somebody
that didn't want to be doing the McD thing, you have a good chance of
finding it there. And don't forget price. Not that they are necessarily
low-priced all the time, but they are usually fairly priced (being in the NE
USA, the alternatives in my area would make a lawyer blush).

Mark:

I haved to agree with your assessment on HD. I have found them to be quite
negoitable and always back up their stuff. I recently returned a 10x10 E-Z
Canopy that was an absolute piece of dogpile almost a year later and they
took it back and refunded my money no questions asked.

I think the website is a great example of Freedom of speech and Sam is right
in execrcising it. I probably done it differently and would have tried to
email Nardelli. Knowing that he came from GE he is a stickler for quality
and process improvement.
