So far, +5 vs 0.
The latest:
Had a last min. need for Arbor Vitaes, for some privacy issues.
Spent 1/2 hr on the phone -- 30 solid minutes of mostly waiting on hold --
with HD, 4 different people, 2 hangups, 3 diff. stories. Ultimately, no
arbor vitaes.
Called Lowes: No arbor vitaes, either. But, it only took me 20 seconds to
glean this info. Boom, bang, done.
Goodgawd....
Unfortly, no Lowes conventient to me, gotta pay a toll to NJ, always a
traumatic event for me.
If you google Westchester County, NY, you'll see 500 HDs, and not ONE
Lowes.... I don't know what (or who) is behind that, but I'm sure there is
some corruption at work.
HD is sumpn else.... I think shit service is their own personal artform,
and I think managers are rewarded for it, bec undoubtedly shit service
corresponds highly with cost savings for them. I'm sure seeing 3 out of 15
cashiers open, with long lines on each, just warms Management's heart.

Wish that were the case by my HD and Lowes.
Neither has enough people. When you can't find something, you can't get
an answer either.
Most of the stores around here are understaffed.

The biggest jerks that I ever ran into were at a HVAC wholesaler.
They refused to sell me some duct board about 25 years ago. I asked the
manager his full name so he could be mentioned on the air at the TV
station, and told him that I didn't want to blame the wrong guy for
refusing to sell to a Christian TV station. His eyes went wide, and he
yelled at one of his workers to pull what I wanted, then gave me 'D'
column pricing. They even loaded it into my truck without being asked.
:)
We weren't doing any HVAC work, we needed to block the sides of the
water chillers on the transmitter to bring the coolant to normal
operating temperature, before we flushed the transmitter and refilled it
with distilled water & antifreeze.

13 "lumber yards" plus about 15 "building supply" not counting the

Well, my father was in the building tradesmost of his life, and I have
friends in the building trades - and NONE of them buy their building
materials from Home Depot. If they need something for a small project
on the weekend they MIGHT pick up a few odds and ends because their
supplier is not open.
They will buy from the Home Building Supply (formerly Beaver Lumber up
here) or TimberMart, or one of the Rona associated lumber yards - or
any of a number of local "builders supply" yards.
For electrical and plumbing supplies, likewise.
If I need plumbing supplies Marks Supply is my first choice locally -
Home Hardware and One Stop Plumbing are tied for second choice,
followed by Canadian Tire , and Home Depot. Canadian Tire is closest
to home, followed by Home Hardware, then Home Depot, Marks, and One
Stop.
For electrical, Guillevan Supply, Pope Electric, Home Hardware and
Canadian Tire, and Home Depot. I don't bother with the big Rona store
and have not even been inside the new Lowes store just across town.
Dad dealt with a few other large electrical distributors that are not
as handy to me - but I use them when I need something specialized or
if Guillevan does not have it in stock (or I'm at the other side of
the county and need something).

As I recall the wood at HD comes from Chile and is cut metric size.
e.g. getting 1/2" ply isn't 1/2". Buy a metric/imperial datao set.

My experience is that HD is crap. Lowe's only slightly better. Went to get
two 12' 2 x 12's, and the WHOLE PALLET had a split in the same place on the
end of evey board running 18". Went to HD, and found two out of about 100

If you want GOOD lumber, you will go to a lumber yard, as they carry sizes
and grades you can't find at the Borgs. Kinda depends on the project, and,
as stated, if they give you a break for having an account, etc. But I think
any lumber yard has better lumber on average than either Lowe's or HD.

What some stores grasp and most others do not is that if there is always a
line at the registers, the sales volume will always be limited (one way or
another) by the number of open registers times the rate at which the
checkers ring stuff up. If stores want to maximize sales, there should
never be a line. If there is any line at all, pausing the line for 5
minutes for a price check on a $2.00 item makes even less sense.

It's not that simple. 12mm ply isn't 12mm, either. Sheet goods
thicknesses vary all over the place. Adjust the design to the
particular sheet.

Don't know what your point is, but if you want to pay top dollar, there are
plenty in stock in Westchester County.
Sprain Brook has 8 footers for $450.... perty 'spensive garbage, eh?
Windy Farms has'em for $65, but full sun only.
HD had'em for $20-35, depending on the type. And, there are proly a dozen
varieties.
And yeah, it's late in the season.... so I took a shot....

MY point was, 20 sec vs. 30 mins, plain and simple....
AND, this is not an isolated case. Getting info over the phone from HD is
ALWAYS, without exception, a nightmare, and *almost* invariably incorrect.
I've had them tell me stuff was NOT in stock, and it turns out it was in
stock. Of course, much more the opposite case. Never fails at HD.
My conclusion is that shoddy service has become a sport with them. Esp.
over here, where there are no Lowes to keep them on their toes -- no rhyme

They're not set up to spend a lot of time with phone calls. That's part of
the reason the prices are low. WRT Lowe's, the stores in the NY Metro area
are much newer than HD, but more oriented toward women. They are seriously
deficient in hardcore plumbing fittings, for example.

The idiot doesn't know that they have offices in the rear of their
stores that cater to contractors. Or that contractors buy lumber by the
truckload. I couldn't find any T-111 plyood siding for over a month,
years ago because a contractor bought every pallet of it that 84,
Builder's Square, HD or Lowe's could get their hands on. All the
lumber yards had were a few damaged sheets.

He hates everyone, including himself.
This town has a Lowes, Home Depot (depot was here first) and two large
lumber yards. 10 miles away is another lumberyard. They sell guns
there. :-) Another 20 and there is another - different direction. And
going north there are three in that larger town. Ours have 4 if you
count the do all box stores.
I agree - no builder would do that - but handy persons do. They often
have ladies with them buying the stuff and they tote it back to make the
shed or deck or whatever.
Naturally wood mills are 20 miles in several directions as well. Some
large. One once was but was sold off and for most chunks sold off.

That said, I can still find more of what I need there than at Home Depot.

Here in Canada, I have a HD about two blocks away, and a Rona three
blocks away, right next to a real lumber yard. I usually go to the HD,
can't find what I want at end up at Rona, the store is much smaller, but
invariably has what I need.
There is a Lowes being built and I believe it will open just after the
holidays about a block in the other direction. Wondering how that will
change my shopping habits.

True, I have little bad to say about the front-line help, given their
abilities. They try, but still, informational and organizational chaos
persists.
But I think you cite pure coincidence in the stock price vs. the help.
But, holy shit, indeed, the price doubled in one year!!
http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3AHD&ei=SW2_UKjCK4Ll0QHyUA
Which makes the chaos inexcusable. But understandable and perhaps
inevitable: HD can now do whateverTF they want, and there's not a fukn
thing you or me can do about it.
Well, there is, and PMT nailed it. And I really try to go local, but too
often the price differential -- and the irritating convenience of HD --
prevails.
Indeed, I watch myself fuck myself, all too often. We fuck ourselves, we
fuck each other, and HD laughs hysterically, to/fro the bank.

Arbor Vitaes are garbage shrubs.
Grow like weeds and are difficult to trim and maintain.
Have a useful life of about 10 years if you're lucky.
About the only thing they have going for them is cost.
They are dirt cheap compared to Yews or similar shrubs.

My comments based on events in NE Ohio (Metro Cleveland)
which has weather similar to NJ, but probably closer to CT.
Soil was basically clay that had the top soil stripped during
construction
of the development.
Lots of mulch along with some fertilizer helped things along.
No deer to keep things trimmed back then.

Obscenity begets profanity.... pretty much dat simple.
Sorta like fighting clean in a street fight -- dudn't make much sense, now,
does it?
If YOU are not driven to the point of profanity, then you proly don't really
understand the true depth of the problem.
Toughen up, dood.... it's way past the point of being polite, it's time to

Oh, btw, that would be "you're an idiot", not "your an idiot"....

500 Home Depots?
You know Home Depot has on-line interactive inventory. I look up what I
want on their website and then check the stores on-line to see if they have
it. Then I am not stuck with the vagaries of knowledge from a failed
contractor who works as a clerk at the store because they failed as a
contractor. If do need help in the store I look for the "old guy" who is
actually working.
If you mean the tree... arborvitae then they show 4 (1 discontinued) on-line
and they all say "on-line only." Took me about a minute to check.
The crappy pride in workmanship that you complain about is why I like to
check things myself if I can. I was raised that you do the job whatever it
is to the best of your ability no matter the wage. If you agreed to take
the money to do the job its immoral to do anything but a good job.
Per Stanley Schaefer:
> Might be a local
>management change is needed. And the HDs here have self-checkout, no
>lines at those, usually. Lowes doesn't, but opens up checkouts as
>needed.
On credit card sales under $50, our HD does not even want a
signature.
OTOH, the Lowe's I used to go to has the poorest checkout scheme
I've ever seen. Ironically, it is across from Target - which has
the fastest, slickest checkout scheme I have seen.

He's not cursing, just being potty mouthed. The real "trick" to
cursing/cussing/"ripping them an new one" is to be able to do it in
wards that can be repeated in mixed company.
My brother reported of hearing a master at work, during joint
operations with the RN. Seems one of Her Majesty's junior Captains
managed to come to the attention of Her Majesty's Task Force
Commander, over some - less than stellar seamanship, shall we say? As
my brother reported, it was a joy to hear over the Radio no less
(which is how he heard it, standing a communications watch.) as the
Senior Officer ah "rebuke" the Junior Officer. 'buked, rebuked,
dressed down, tear into, and leave no doubt at all as to the Senior
Officer's opinion of the Junior officer's skills, seamanship, ability
to command on of Her Majesty's ship, and probably his future career
ashore in solid waste retrieval.

Locally some of the smaller renovation companies buy from the HD
"contractor's desk" - but none of the major home-builders.

Around here, major home builders means entire subdivisions of
identical houses, or modular homes. We had three modular home
factories, till the housing bubble burst. All on rail lines who bought
directly from OEMs and had the lumber & chassis delivered by rail.
The custom builders deal with everyone, including HD & Lowe's, if they
can find what they want at the right price. Around here, most of the
smaller 'lumberyards' & 'hardware stores' catered to modular home
industry, and sold the surplus when it was available. One of those is
now in the scrap metal business, with very little lumber left. In an
area with a very high percentage of retirees, not many people build
their own homes. We wouldn't have two Lowes & a HD if the builders
didn't buy from them.

HD contractor's desk sells the wrong sized doors just like any other outfit.
Just more often.
Steve
Per PrecisionmachinisT:
>If I want plumbing, I go to a plumbing supply house....
This is probably totally moot to anybody's point but...
A long time ago, I was refitting the bathrooms in our house with
new faucets.
I bought cartridge-operated ones from Kmart.
The same day, I went to a plumbing-supply store to buy a Delta
brand lever-operated faucet for the kitchen sink.
Out of curiosity, I put one of the KMart faucets on the counter
and asked "What's the difference between this and Delta?".
The guy behind the counter got red in the face and almost shouted
"*This* is quality and *that* is SHIT!"
It's been 30+ years since that day and I've never had a problem
with any of the bathroom faucets. Then I noticed that the local
gym where I went for 10+ years used the same faucets.
OTOH, I've had to rebuild the Delta faucet in the kitchen at
least five times..... -)

Thats one of the reasons they offer lower prices than the other
stores..and why they try to get folks to do the self checkout. Keeps
their personal expenses down.

The methodology of the left has always been:
1. Lie
2. Repeat the lie as many times as possible
3. Have as many people repeat the lie as often as possible
4. Eventually, the uninformed believe the lie
5. The lie will then be made into some form oflaw
6. Then everyone must conform to the lie

Same here. First time I shopped at Home Depot in two years was a few
days ago. Rubbermaid had some very nice but expensive high quality,
heavy duty (Brute) storage bins. Got five of them. $20 each.

With both Lowes and HD, I check online to see if 1) they have anything
close to what I want and 2) if it's in stock in the myriad of stores
in the area. In some cases, I've seen that they had adequate stock
online only to get over to a specific store and find that somebody's
cleaned them out between the time I looked and my arrival. So I go
hit another. Must have at least a dozen of each in the area, three or
four on the way home from work. For those items they don't carry or
for a quick trip, Ace is closer and has more oddball stuff, usually
higher prices, too. I can usually get floor droids to answer my
questions at both Lowes and HD, the local HDs were hiring guys with
trades experience for floor workers at one time. If you're getting
crappy service at HD, complain to the head office. Might be a local
management change is needed. And the HDs here have self-checkout, no
lines at those, usually. Lowes doesn't, but opens up checkouts as
needed.

Some people just don't understand the concept of a WAREHOUSE STORE.
Sad, isn't it?
Around here, Lowe's offers a 10% Veteran's discount.

Yup, an absolutely BRILLIANT strategy! Make sure no customer ever
sets foot in the store, and you won't need any of that expensive staff.

There's actually a whole branch of math that deals in optimal strategies
for managing checkout lines and the like. Google "Queuing Theory".

> I think it is clear who has the problem here. Your expectations are totally unreasonable. Lowes and HD both offer the same specific value; a huge fricking building full of deep inventory for all items they stock at reasonable prices. They are not offering good customer service. They hire people who can't get real jobs or are too old to want to work hard. Visit the store and buy what you find on the shelf or don't. That is clearly what they offer. Works for me several
times a week on average.
They do have some problems though. One time I needed a y-fitting for
the garden hose. According to the HD web site they were sold out, but
according to the Lowes site they had plenty in stock. So I went by
Lowes and nobody could find one of the blasted things. So I went out to
the parking lot, ordered online for same day pickup, waited ten minutes
for the email that they had it ready, walked in, and the same person who
couldn't find it handed it to me.

A real lumber yard doesn't have a bunch of shit lumber in their yard to
begin with, and (at least where I'm at), the prices are usually the same or
lower...
--And if any of it starts into warping etc then it goes into the "utility"
pile where a DF stud 2x4x8 currently sells for about 99 cents...
IOW, if you're "picking over the pile" at Home Depot in order to find boards
to frame a house with, not only are you you're getting crap, but you're also
paying more than the fucking boards are worth; it's green lumber and so
unless you get into a fresh unit, pretty much all of it will be warped and
cracked after 2 days of "picking over"
Let's see..pay more for shit boards, or pay the same amount and get good
boards...and if you are only building a chicken coop and can actually use
shit boards, pay 30 cents on the dollar for them...
--yup, definitely a hard decision..

There were lumberyards around here that required a copy of your
business license, and tax certificate before you could set up an
account. One now has very few customers, and a lot of 'OPEN TO THE
PUBLIC!!!' But after 25+ years of telling people to go away, they are in
no hurry to deal with them.

It has been an on again, off again policy for almost a decade around

The local HD told me they only offer it on the two days I stated, a
few months ago.

Not so much:
http://ext.homedepot.com/community/blog/veterans-and-active-military-thank-you-for-your-service-employment-opportunities-tribute-discount/
The Home Depot offers a year-round, 10 percent discount, up to a $500
maximum, at our U.S. stores to all active duty military personnel,
reservists, retired or disabled veterans and their immediate families.
We offer this discount to thank them for their outstanding service to
this nation and to help make their homes more comfortable and safe.
Customers requesting the discount should present a valid military ID.
In addition, a 10 percent discount is also offered in recognition of
Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day at all U.S.
Home Depot stores for all other military veterans.

The town I live in..has NO lumberyards. Ace Hardware Store keeps some
wood..but its 3x the price of the same lumber at HD 32 miles away.
As is most of their Stuff.
When I moved here in 1983..we had 2 full blown lumberyards. Then the
Oil Depression hit...and it all died
3 good hardware stores. Everything from bearings to kerosene lanterns.
AND a Western Auto.
All gone now. Wilsons is still for sale..and has most of of its stock
still on the shelves. About 10 yrs now....shrug

Someone has some brains.
If I just need a single something plumbin-wize I'll go to HD, Canadian
Tire, or Home Hardware. If I need anything specialized or any amount,
it's over to Marks Supply.
Electrical? Little stuff, the above. Anything specialized or any amout
- over to Guilevans orWesco or whatever.
Hardware? depends - usually Home Hardware or Canadian Tire - HD if I'm
headed that direction -

Pretty much depends on where you life. Lots of lumberyards, hardware
stores and plumbing supply houses.
They wont sell to the public? Bring in a business card. Even from
someone you know and tell em thats you and open a cash account.
They really dont give a shit beyond following corporate rules.
Sales are sales, expessially when its in cold hard green money.

Pretty much.

I haven't even seen a real lumber yard or what I'd call a real
hardware store in years. I never frequented plumbing supply houses -
they didn't like walk-in business so I always avoided them.
>They wont sell to the public? Bring in a business card. Even from

I don't know any plumbers. Sorry. Not going to happen. If they
don't want my business I'm not going to force them to do business.
>They really dont give a shit beyond following corporate rules.
>Sales are sales, expessially when its in cold hard green money.
Actually, many do. Some would rather not piss off their customers
than make what few bucks I'd bring them. I found plumbing houses
especially didn't want my business (electrical were much more willing
to take my dead presidents).

I just drive to my local HD and buy them. They are always bigger and cheaper
than at Lowes, and they always have them.

Is there some reason you are fixated on only big box?
We have two local garden centers that have great service with better
quality plants and lower prices than big box.

That's not fair to categorize all of the salespeople as the same.
I have met my share of helpful salepeople at both Lowes and Home Depot.
However, admittedly there are more clueless salespeople on the floor
than helpful ones. How many electricians does either store need? If
there is one in the store on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday between 9:00
and 3:00, maybe that's enough?

Home Depot encourages homosexuals.
I try to avoid HD because they don't share my beliefs. Please follow this
link below and see if you agree. My principle is that homosexuality is a
sin. Professing homosexuals constitute 3.7% of the US population but they
seem to make a lot of noise. God has spoken and shown His judgement in
Sodom and Gomorrah, etc.
Those without a cloo about God or His Word will immediately jump in like an
idiot and say I am "judging". The same people will say that I am
"intolerant". I am merely evaluating behavior and noting that God approves
or not; God already judged. I tolerate those who sin. I am not sure that
their behavior is any worse than any other sin, my own sins included.
However, I try not to give encouragement to any sin, as Home Depot does.

HD doesn't get my business often, but only in situations where I can't get
to town right away. It is a compromise that I have to make. And I make
other compromises when there is no other game in town.
Many more people than you might think really care. The fact that you don't
care can't be fairly projected into most other people, but only to those
close to you. The majority of people have chosen to adopt Godly principles
to their lives and to learn about good and evil, right and wrong, etc.
Sadly, most people do not live up to their beliefs, including me. I do
acknowledge that there are increasing masses of people like yourself who
make all the noise and get most of the attention of the socialist media.
btw, Atheism is a religion.

Double check on their websites, because I can't remember the specifics, but
I believe they both offer year round 10% discounts to retired vets (proof
required), and also to disabled vets. Regular old vets only get the
discount on 3 or 4 days of the year. It's on their web sites - might take a
bit of looking to find it.

Not really a surprise that they got it wrong. That particular policy is
fairly new and caused a huge amount of confusion within the ranks at HD when
it came out. It was not as clearly articulated initially. Not surprising
there are still people who misunderstand it.

LOL! you prove so easily that you are projecting.
Within 5 miles of me are 4 lumberyards, a half dozen plumbing stores, 4 hardware
stores, plus the usual Lowes and HD.
Keep looking in that mirror as you write.

You're a lucky man. There's not a real old school hardware store within
20 miles of me. Now the supply houses will sell to me, there's at least
plumbing and electrical nearby, but some have Saturday hours and some don't.
My parents just told me that the big hardware store where I grew up just
closed as well :(

Somebody who follows stock prices told me that HD's stock has
come way, way up in recent years.
Seemed to me like that coincided with local HD's service level.
Used to be that when an employee saw me, they'd try to duck into
another aisle to avoid answering a question. That's when the
stock was very low.
Now I practically have to fend them off.
Sounds like an upper-level management change to me.

The methodology of the left has always been:
1. Lie
2. Repeat the lie as many times as possible
3. Have as many people repeat the lie as often as possible
4. Eventually, the uninformed believe the lie
5. The lie will then be made into some form oflaw
6. Then everyone must conform to the lie

Right. I'm told that many managers will give it to any vet, anytime,
if they ask. Store managers (even department managers) have a lot of
leeway.

Might be a location/climate thing.
I took a bunch of cuttings from my parent's house at the Jersey
shore, planted them along the sides of our house about 30 years
ago and they've been doing fine ever since with little or no
attention. *Really* poor soil: solid shale with a few inches of

If I want lumber, I go to a lumberyard....
If I want hardware, I go to a hardware store...
