OT - Anyone Snowed In This Morning

Southeast Kansas:

They ran the road grader down the road in front of the house two or
three times yesterday. Can't even tell where the road is his
morning. Our 120' driveway is knee to thigh high all the way out to
the "road" My neighbor's 4x4 is in his drive with snow to the middle
or top of the tires.

Oh Well. Generator is ready, fuel ready, potato soup ready, firewood
on the porch, beer in the fridge.

Emergency Preparedness!

We got sprung this morning. Our neighbor bailed us out again with his
tractor and scoop. City grader made another pass while he was here
and got the street cleaned. We are fortunate that some of our town's
sewer system controls are about 1/2 mile south of us so they keep the
road open in all weather. Another small town trait - A local farmer/
rancher has a couple hundred head of cattle down there, and they have
been grading past the control station so he can get hay in and keep
the pond surfaces broken.

We got maybe 15 cm, but it is very dense, wet packing stuff. A shovel-
full weighs a ton. I did drive Angela to work and roads were fine. I
guess they actually managed to stay ahead with the plows for a change.

Just made it to 32 F here today. 19 F last nite, but no precipitation.
Supposed to snow tomorrow maybe, but don't expect to get snowed in.
If it does ice or snow, this whole town shuts down, no matter how small
of an amount it gets. We should be above freezing on saturday.

Remember weather like that when I was a kid growing up in the boonies
of NE Ohio.

Great in the summer but winters were a bear.

Here in SoCal temps had a tough time reaching 60F; however, winds are
another matter.

Sustained 65MPH-70MPH winds in the canyons and passes.

The I-10 & I-15 interstates between L/A and Vegas were littered with
18 wheelers flipped over on their sides like match box toys.

Good day to stay hunkered down.

All this talk about some fantasy extreme weather. Doncha know, in the age
of global warming, that these winter storms are right wing propaganda??

It was sunny and 47 degrees here today with no wind. I tried walking the
dog. I had to take my winter coat off. I got too warm. What an
inconvenience!! Bitch, bitch, grumble, grumble

Have to go now. My missus is preparing some late winter barbecue for me. I
am not sure what it is, but it sure smells good. Winter livin' sure is
hard. <G>

--------------------------------------------

AUG 12
Moved to our new home in Pennsylvania. It so beautiful here.
The mountains are so majestic. Can hardly wait to see them
with snow covering them. I love it here.

OCT 14
Pennsylvania is the most beautiful place on Earth. The
leaves are turned all the colors and shades of red and
orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful mountains and
saw some Deer. They are so graceful, certainly they are the
most wonderful animals on Earth. This must be Paradise, I
love it here.

NOV 11
Deer season will start soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting
to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon. I
love it here.

DEC 02
It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed
in white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and
cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We
had a snowball fight (I won), and when the snowplow came by,
we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place,
I love Pennsylvania!

DEC 12
More snow last night. I love it. The snowplow did his trick
again to the driveway. I love it here.

DEC 19
More snow last night. Couldn't get of the driveway to get to
work. I am exhausted from shoveling. Friggin snowplow.

DEC 25
Merry Friggin Christmas. More friggin snow. If I ever get
my hands on that son of a bitch who drives that snowplow, I
swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know why they don't use
more salt on the road to melt the friggin ice.

DEC 27
More white crap last night. Been inside for three (3) friggin
days except for shoveling out the driveway after that
snowplow goes through everytime. Can't go anywhere, car's
stuck in a mountain of white crap. The weatherman says to
expect another 10 inches of white crap again tonight. Do you
know how many shovels full of snow 10 inches is?

DEC 28
The friggin weatherman was WRONG. We got 34 inches of that
white crap this time! At this rate, it won't melt before next summer.
The snowplow got stuck up the road and the bastard came to the door
and asked to borrow my shovel.

After I told him I had broken six (6) shovels already shoveling all
the crap he pushed into the driveway, I broke my last one over his
friggin head.

JAN 04
Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food
and on the way back a damned DEER ran in front of the car and I
hit it. Did about $4,500 damage to the car.
Those friggin beasts should be shot on sight.
Wished the hunters had killed them all last November.

MAY 03
Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing
is rusting out from all that friggin salt they put all over the road.

MAY 10
Moved to California. I can't imagine why anyone in their right
mind would ever live in that god-forsaken state of Pennsylvania.

Not to worry Swingman. You are in Texas!! You guys are supposed to be

Besides, you can always go out and pick up a bunch of cow pies, horse puckys
and buffalo chips. Toss them in the fireplace and light them. That should
keep you warm for a day or two.

Glad to help.

You might be right. Not the weather but the overblown media coverage
regarding some of it. Granted the amounts of snow and cold we are
seeing here is quite unusual; but the news coverage regarding the
coastal areas seems to be way overdone.

We're slow at work this time of year so yesterday I decided to just shut the
place down today. Why risk a dozen people travelling is snow and ice to do
what can be done tomorrow?

We can get out if we want to, but we don't want to. No practical reason.
Our town (in CT) does a good job of snow removal. If I can get out my
driveway, I can get around town. Total before yesterday was 71".

Yesterday, I slipped on ice, fell backwards and banged the back of my head.
Never had a concussion like this before, don't want one again.

We don't seem too bad this morning...so far.
We have drifts half way up some of the higher windows and it is a little
dark in here with the severe winds on this mountain.

Highways are all closed now.

Now _I_ remember when... :)

1957 late March...when it quit snowing and blowing after 3 days we had a
drift that was within about a foot of the top of 30-ft light pole.
Buried every one-story building on the place including completely over
the small farrowing house. Have picture taken about a week later (no
time for pictures before that) of brother and myself on the drift by the
pole -- it was still over 3/4 way up; we were at the line height...

Driveway had 6-ft fences on both sides--it filled it level full from the
road the 100 yds all the way to the barn and on south past the corrals.

My grandson shoveled part of the drive and I'm glad he only made a path.
Where shoveled, it is slick and slippery. There is plenty of slush to walk
on in the morning. Plenty of accidents on the road though, was best to stay

It's nt too bad here in North Jersey. There is about 2-3 inches frozen
precip, but at least on the car it's wet underneath. Even our cul-de-sac
in Radburn got "plowed" by the town's miniplow. We'll wait a little before
venturing out. Locally, the schools are closed, but our daughter had to go
and teach at the Soth Orane/Maplewood high school.

No, but snow is forecast for tomorrow night in Houston.

When it snows here, the residents go nuts! They stock up on canned goods,
they huddle in the family room and pray, church pews fill up. The city
itself scrambles into its "dire emergency" mode: Schools, freeways, and
airports close, CONELRAD is activated, city trucks prowl the streets with
speakers blaring "Bring out your dead, bring out your dead..."

Evacuation routes are clogged.

The radio stations give out up-to-the-minute reports from on-scene
reporters: "The Kroger store on Flat Opossum Road is OUT OF BOTTLED WATER!"

Little children scrape the snow off car hoods, mold six-inch high snowmen,
and dance in circles (wearing everything they own) with childish delight.
Neighbors wearing Bermuda shorts, stop by with a beer and shoot the snowmen.
The children make MORE snowment. Soon we have a shooting gallery - until the
beer is gone. Then it's off to the Stop-And-Rob for more, plus a supply of
strawberry pop-tarts.

It's embarrassing for those of us who have actually SEEN snow.

We Q all year round. I have 2 chickens in dry rub to be Q'd tomorrow.
Our back deck is sheltered from bad weather (unless the wind comes
from the NE) and when I fill my smoke-brick with hickory shavings, I
piss off the entire neighbourhood with that 'summer BBQ' smell.
A few weeks ago, Angela called me from her car and wanted to know what
I was cooking... she was at least 1/4 a mile away...LOL We love winter

Yup - and I had to plow a foot or so, and I woke up expecting to have to dig

Good for you! We do have a bit more snow right now than my wife cares to
deal with at the grill, though we do cook out all year long. It's just that
sometimes...

I remember back in 2000 when my Chevy Silverado HD 2500 was the same

BTW - This has been an interesting few day in the four state area.
Broke a record on Sunday with a high temperature of 72 degrees.
Tuesday, a blizzard that with the third largest snowfall on record.
Expecting temperatures tonight in the -8 to -15 range. That is damned
cold in this part of the country. The edge of the Ozark Plateau is
about 30 miles southeast of here.

Got about 15" over the last 1.5 days... wife drove 30 some miles last
night during the worst of the winds and it was the last 200 yards that
stopped her... 50 mph winds, four foot drifts over the driveway...

My poor neighbor with his driveway just over the crest of the ridge
(which runs E/W, winds were outta the North) had one massive drift
over his entire driveway, level with the ridge top (about 5 foot above
most of the driveway) was running his snowblower before me and for
more than an hour after... and his driveway is about 1/3 the length of
ours....

Now, for areas around Lake Erie this is just another day in paradise
but for us, it was a 20 year storm, if not 50....

Oh, yeah, I am in southern WI.

Hope everyone else is as happy about getting an unscheduled day offa
work as I am :-D

Now _I_ remember when... :)

1957 late March...when it quit snowing and blowing after 3 days we had a
drift that was within about a foot of the top of 30-ft light pole.
Buried every one-story building on the place including completely over
the small farrowing house. Have picture taken about a week later (no
time for pictures before that) of brother and myself on the drift by the
pole -- it was still over 3/4 way up; we were at the line height...

Driveway had 6-ft fences on both sides--it filled it level full from the
road the 100 yds all the way to the barn and on south past the corrals.

That infrastructure problem is all over the place, there have apparently
been over 100 water main breaks in Toronto over the last few days. Lot
of digging to fix those in frozen ground, and makes for a ton of

I remember on Lincoln's birthday (Feb.12th) back in the early 80s we had
a huge snowstorm overnight.
In the parking lot of our apartment house, my friend's MG was snow
covered to the point where he couldn't see where it was parked.
The only clue was a snow lump between two full sized cars whose window
tops were the only thing showing.

I looked at the 6" of snow in my driveway this morning but didn't start
up the snow blower mounted 18 HP garden tractor to clean it.
I knew the freezing rain was coming later, so I put off cleaning the
driveway until later. The temp is supposed to reach 34º F.
I figured I'd rather have the freezing rain and ice laying on top of the
snow than on a cleaned driveway. The blower can handle both.

We got hammered in So Or last night. It has dropped to 27F and there
is nearly 1/16" of frost on the roofs. I wonder when FEMA will get
here...

Nah! Only REAL Canadians know what it's like to experience snowfall. I've
posted a picture of Toronto's recent snowfall in ABPW. Toronto is buried in
there *somewhere*. :)

Third day of below freezing weather here in Houston, and snow and ice
forecast for tonight and in the morning.

We've had scheduled rolling electrical brownouts (I think there is more
to that story than what the media is being fed by ERCOT), and our
natural gas pressure has gotten so low at times that both gas fireplace
and water heater have to be watched/relit periodically. So far the gas
furnaces have stayed on due to the pressure regulators ... glad of that

Population shift, and old infrastructure not being maintained (hell,
global warming means we don't have to fix it) are contributing to cold
weather problems that I've never seen in this part of the country in 60
years.

The forecast called for 10" - 18" in Buffalo. We got about 3". I'm
not complaining though.

70+ deg here (Coast Ranges, NorCal). Bright blue skies.

I'm not gloating, it actually seems a little weird to me.
