I am trying my hand at dissolving shellac flakes to make a 1lb cut for
sealing prior to staining. I am using the recommended alcohol to
dissolve them, but I cannot get the lumps of shellac in the bottom of
the container to disappear. It seems that it would require constant
agitation to get it completely dissolved.
What am I doing wrong?

Stir it for 10 minutes.

Heh... Put the rocks in in December. Listen to it make its tremendous
racket until February, changing grits a few times along the way. Voila.
Instant dust collector.

Something else you might try:
Last Christmas, I asked for and received as a gift a ceramic mortar &
pestle set from William's Sonoma. They are rough finished with the
consistency of 220 grit paper. This lets me really grind the shellac
out to fine particles to speed dissolving.

Now *there's* something to watch for at the garage sales. Good idea.

I mixed up a 2lb cut last weekend - right before sitting down
to watch a football game. I swished the jar around at each TV
timeout. It was fully dissolved by halftime.
In the past, it has dissolved on it's own in a few days...even
the big lump at the bottom. I was shaking it 1-2 times per day.

Being impatient.

Note too, that some of the less refined grades of shellac seem
to have a waxy sediment that never dissolves. The OP doesn't
say what he's using, but if it's not dewaxed blonde, then he
might run into that situation.

There's something familiar about this question. (I asked the same one about
a week ago). In the end, patience did the trick. I did pulverized the
shellac with an electric coffee grinder first, which I'm sure helped
greatly. You don't say if you did anything similar. Shaking it now and
then was all it took.

I did the same thing here in Chicago. Every time Green Bay scored a TD, I
shook the container. Took no time at all.

Or Goodwill. I picked one up there and just saw another this week.

Get that old rock tumbler out of the basement and let it turn your
shellac mixture round and round. It'll cut the time way down.

Sheesh, another cheesehead.
I make mine in 8 oz squeeze bottles when I first go to the shop, and shake
every time I pass by and think about it. Either that, or set it in the room
as I watch TV, read, play at the computer, and do the same. I would think
those who make shellac powder and let it sit are shooting themselves in the
foot, because the smaller pieces will find closer ways to fit together and
keep the solvent on the outside. Think of the marble in the spray can.

Yeah, OK, so maybe not. How about instant shed space waster?

You're probably just a little impatient. I just last week made up a batch
of 1 lb cut. The collective wisdom of this group discussed this very topic
about a week or so ago so my remarks may be redundant to some. Anyhows,
here are some tips. Grind up the shellac....some use a coffee grinder.
Warm the shellac-alcohol solution in the sun or in _warm_ water. Shake it
up every chance you get. That batch I just made up took 3 days to totally
dissolve. So there you are.
