If any of you are geting e-mails, with my e-mail address, it is not
me. Some person, or persons, is forging my e-mail address to send span
and/or viruses. I even got one myself.
Today I have already received about 9 messages saying I had failed
e-mails. Different subjects, different servers. This has been going on
for a couple of days.
There are only a very few people I would be e-mailing, and th os
people know who they are. So, unless it specifically states in the
first couple of lines that is it by e-mail only, you can pretty well
take it that it is phoney, and not from me. I would not open any
attachments, as apparently at least one attachment had a virus.
While on the subject, did a google the other day on
"jakofalltrades". Interesting. Seems several people with serers other
than WebTV use that also. One forum I had never even heard of has a
poster that goes by jakofalltrades, just that shows, no @ etc. They
have a working to not pay attention to his posts. LOL
Also see some of the posts from rec.woodworking showing up on other
sites also. Well, I guess I have no problem using them, but I didn't
post there. My posting has been to rec.woodworking, a few other
newsgroups - on kit-cars and steam, a few Yahoo groups, and that's it,
as far as I can recall. But, if it doesn't have @webtv.net, then it is
not me for sure.
Been making webpage changes, if anyone cares to look.

I've gotten over 200 here at work. Norton caught them all. In
addition, someone with me in their address book got it and it's sending
itself out with my name in the headers. As a result, we're listed as a
spamming account. Both swbell and AOL are blocking our account (and
we're with SWBell).

There's a worm taking over the net over the past couple of days.
Everyone's getting these things.
I even got one telling me I had been successfully unsubscribed from a
mailing list I'd never heard of.

Also keep in mind that just because you get an email that says "From: foo",
it doesn't mean that "foo" sent the email, or even that it came from
"foo's" computer. It is trivially easy to forge the From header, and many
virus programs will do so to try to hide their tracks.

These big providers will not hesitate to throw out the baby with the
bathwater. Tech support is being done overseas and most of them are
illiterate on the underpinnings of the Internet. There have been some
horrendous constraints imposed by RR, SBC, et al, on some of our client's
e-mail here lately that just make no sense from a technical standpoint.
Between the spammers, the anti-spam vigilantes, and the sledgehammer tactics
being used by the big ISP, it's getting tougher to get your business done by
e-mail these days.
The "sobig" worm that spawned this thread is spoofing the "from" headers, so
expect to see a lot of misguided bitching at completely innocent folks and
businesses.
