Was in the local hardwood lumber store (Owl Hardwood) with my "helpers" (3
and 5 year old girls) today to pick up a piece of maple ply. Maybe you guys
see this stuff all the time, but they had two pieces of 8/4 red oak 24" wide
and 120" long. I'm not wild about working with red oak, but it would be
kinda fun to tackle some pieces this large. I shudder to think of the size
of the legs David Eisan would make for a table with a top made from these
pieces. ;-)

I go to the Des Plaines store. Huge selection and a really nice staff.
Before I was aware of what wood actually costs, I was apalled to see a small
piece of ebony (coudn't have been larger than 1x2x6) with a price of 15$.
I immediately started thinking of ways to use it.

I love that store. I haven't the tools (yet) for rough cut lumber, but I
still go there on my lunch break sometimes just to think and smell the wood.
No, I don't loiter all the time. I have bought some of their dimensioned
poplar.

Near Chicago. Owl has three locations in the area (Des Plaines, Lombard,
and Oak Lawn). The Lombard store is near me. The Des Plaines store is
larger. The Oak Lawn store is the newest, but I've never been there. I
don't get to the south suburbs much.

I wouldn't call what they have "rough cut". Most of it is S2S. You could,
of course, ask them to dimension anything you wanted. But it's cool to see
the large or unusual pieces that come in now and then. They had a giant
piece of bubinga in there a while back that looked great.
