O/T: Whew It's Toasty

Hit 113F in L/A today, an all time high.

It's still 105F outside my window at 5:30PM PDST as this is being
typed.

Fall arrived last week.

Oh well, it beats snow and 0F.

Go play in the sprinklers or jump in a pool, silly.

I much prefer to live in a climate where you won't die within hours if
you get your clothes wet or forget/lose your jacket, thanks.

I'm that way too, although I've never seen -20F on the thermometer. (Was
assembling an ice rink at -5F once.) It's easy to stay comfortable in
colder weather, hard to stay comfortable in hot weather (extremely
difficult when you throw humidity into the mix.)

Speaking of places not to go because of heat... Next time I go to
Michigan in summer, I'm bringing a coat. It was beautiful outside (80-
85), but the air conditioners were all cranked down to the mid 60's!

Physical labor like building houses? Not so much. Physical stuff like
playing hockey and shoveling snow, definately.

One of the biggest tricks is finding decent stuff. A good coat is not
easy to find, especially with the style being fleece linings. They'll
tend to catch and restrict movement. Guess they're good for sitting on
the deck and watching the ice freeze, but not for actually doing
anything. The coats with a slick lining (nylon?) are the ones necessary
for active people. They'll restrict movement a bit, but not enough to
make it difficult.

First thing I did when I got to SoCal was to bundle up all that
MidWest winter clothing and donate it to Goodwill.

A sweat shirt, swimming trunks and some FlipFops covers the beach.

After that, you play it by ear.

Bull shit.

If it was garbage, I'd dispose of it myself, not pass the disposal
obligation along to GoodWill.

If it doesn't have residual value, it doesn't get donated.

BTW, I'm not into yard sales, I prefer tax deduction receipts from
donations myself.

Add one week and see what happens:

Hit 67F outside my window today.

It's 59F at 05:30PM. PDST as this typed.

Had drizzle through out the day and snow above 6,500 ft elevation.

Oh well, still beats snow and 0F.

Probably "Global Warming" although that same Global Warming is presenting
Houston with 58 degree mornings and that is forecast through next week.
Right now, 2:44 pm it is 79.

Actually you have a 'high" situated to the east of you and it is bringing in
hot desert temperatures. We have that same high bringing in cool
temperatures from the north and that is being reinforced by a low to the
east of us.

I think Houston hit 99 a couple of times on the tarmac this summer.

Hah! I was in phx in time for the '72 flood. There was a foot of
water on the north side of Indian School Road and over 3' on the
south. Knowing that I lettered in swimming, my apartment manager
hired me to help him take the soggy carpets and furniture out of the
lower level of the apartment buildings. I was roommating (UTI and
DeVry students), so it was 6 months of free rent for a day of labor.
I believe that was from a few hour storm, too.

Depends on your situation. I really liked the record setting heat wave we
had in Toronto this past July. Only downside was that I had to turn on the
air conditioner almost every day whether I went out or not. Not doing so
meant I'd be ripped to shreds as punishment by my cat.

And, I had to pay further when the two month cycle electricity bill arrived
in August.

That's your opinion. I would greatly prefer -20F with clear, sunny skies to
100F and 98% humidity any day. Twenty below is when where winter camping
starts to get interesting. But then, I choose to live in the frozen north
of Michigan where I look south into Canada.

One of my brothers is in Arizona and I wouldn't think of visiting there

I have done quite a bit of camping , hiking and snowshoeing in sub-zero
temps. But not "physical labor" as in construction.

You do have to be smart about clothing choices. The biggest challenge is
that the clothing needs between active and inactive periods vary greatly.
Layers is the answer but I find that I am frequently adding or removing
layers to compensation for activity level. Vapor control is another aspect.
Nothing reduces insulation as fast as moisture.

And intelligence is something that you are a little short on
Okay, turn the air conditioner on during the summer
huddle around it
use heaps of electricity
contribute to the greenhouse effect, that is if there is one.
Why can't people put up with what me, my brothers and sisters,my parents,
grandparents and before them had to put up with?
If it is hot, sit in the creek.
If it is cold, then get out and chop some wood or chase your sisters or one

It's winter clothing. It's garbage for the exact same reason that you
wouldn't need it anymore. Isn't stuff that's not needed anymore considered
garbage? It's not like there's a line up at the local thrift store for
winter clothing. If it was worth something, you'd sell it instead.

I bailed from there after I graduated UTI, came back for a girlfriend
who then left me, and bailed again after a single summer back,
installing air conditioners on 270F engines on new pickups. One day
it was 118 outside and a breezy 108 inside, with 4 swamp coolers
going. I don't recall why I left (g) but '72-3 was enough for me.

Oh, I almost forgot something else I remember from Phx. I got my one
and only (so far) medical operation there. My appendix was juuust
about to pop when they finally got me sobered up enough to remove it.
I was drinking to kill the pain all day. Ahhh, memories!

P.S: I did love the Aridzona desert sunrises, though. Gawjus!

SoCal wimps!

Plus 100F temps are common in NorCal, and while 113 is not common,
it's not uncommon. Hit a 115F a few years back, and that in a valley
jes one hop over from SFBA. Usually 5-10 degs hotter in the Central
Valley. I recall one summer in Sacto back in the 70s when it was
still 102F at 2am! Another yr, hit 106F in the 2nd week of Apr.
Hell, in AZ it's usually 105F by 10am EVERY Aug morning. Quit yer
sniveling. ;)

No it doesn't. I can wear appropriate clothes in the winter and still
spend time outside. There's a limit to how few clothes I can wear and
not get arrested and it's still too #@$% hot - all I can do is huddle
around the air conditioner.

i was in mexico this last weekend. 95F+ with 75%+ humidity. today, back in
phx we got golf ball sized hail and 1" of rain in about 30 minutes, which
promptly caused 3' of water in our wash about 2 minutes into the storm.

the week of storms in 79 was worse. it washed out 8 of the 10 bridges over
the river. there was a 4-5 hour backlog getting over the small bridges that
were left, so people were staying on the side where they worked for the
week, then trying to get home on friday night. i was a while before the
water in the river dried enough to allow the riverbottom crossings to be
used (actually, they had to be rebuilt as the paving on the pavement was
simply gone).

Actually I consider 99 on the tarmac quite pleasant for summer. IMHO it has
been pleasantly "not hot" most all summer long although the local weather
guys claim 3rd hottest summer on record. They get their figures from Bush
Intercontinental air port so naturally the temps are going to be uncommonly
higher compared to a more natural setting.

For you guys that like 20 below, do you actually spend your days doing
physical labor in that kind of weather? Just wondering because when I work
out doors in the winter and wear much more than a wind breaker I cannot seem

LOL they way I see in Texas, you can always remove clothing to cool off but

out from your body and cannot bend. '~)
