Save yourself a few bob

G'day all,
Just an idea I came up with the other day, by nessesity rather than
saving a dollar or 2.
I have not been able to get 80g 125mm disks for my ROS in town for the
past 4 weeks or so.
On Monday, in desperation, I purchased a couple pkts with no holes. They
work fine but chuck up a lot of dust. Holes where needed.
I placed an old, holed disk on top of one of the new ones, grabbed a wad
cutter the same diameter as the holes and punched them out. Works just
as good as a bought one ;)
The good news is that the blank disks cost $3.50 for a pkt of 5,
compared to the 8 holed disks @ $4.95 for a pkt of 5.
Not much to write home about, but every dollar in my pocket, rather than
the cash register is a win. :)

Regards
John

Exactly, except when it comes to a "big-box" versus a 'Mom and Pop"
establishment. Tom

Darn right.
Make sure you punch the holes from the grit side towards the back.
That flutes the holes ever so slightly inwards without leaving a sharp
protruding flare which will give snake-trails...(if you were to punch
the holes from the back)
One of my sanders uses a 9-hole disk. When not using the Mirka Abranet
screens, I make my own from stock 6" material. Been doing it for
years....just assumed everybody else was too.
My little gem-of-a-Bosch-quaterter-sheet-sander uses two rows of three
holes... I punch those too.
Punching your own holes not only saves you money, but enhances
versatility. I make really nice scuffing pads by glueing (using 3M
Spray Contact Cement #77) a sheet of ScotchBrite-like material to a
used disk. NEVER put ScotchBrite directly on your hook'n-loop as it
will destroy the little 'hooks'

I have a P/C 1/4 sheet sander that came with a plastic base plate that
had little spikes on it - all you had to do was put a plain piece of
sandpaper on it, then push it down on the spikes - instant dust holes.

This insipred me to make a similar base for my RO sander. A few short
lengths of wooden dowel, sharpened to a point and glued onto a plywood
base - works great and is much faster than punching out individual
holes.

After a while, you won't even need guide marks.. just the appropriate number of
rounds and "Bob's you uncle" you have another one ready for the sander!

Happy wad punching from a fellow cheap SOB.. *g*

G'day Mac,
Talking of being cheap, when I was a kid I can remember pulling nails
from old boards and straightening them for the old man. :)

all the best

I agree 100%, unfortunately in Kal. there are now only 2 hardware shops,
because of the "Big Box" (Bunnings). The last small shop, Neves Tool
Store, closed about 3 weeks ago. I find that I'm using the net more and
more, if time allows. The only draw back is that not many Aussie Co's
trade on the net :(

Mirka sells packs of 50 for about 13 US$ on Amazon. They've gotten good
reviews, but I can't vouch for them yet. I loaded up at the BORG before
finding these on-line.

Here's a link to the 80 grit flavor.

After the glue dried, right? (just kidding)

my dad had a sign shop and I was the youngest of 3 sons.. that made me the
designated "nail puller/straightener" of the crew, among other things...

He's give me a small "crow bar" and a wood block and tell me not to bend them
when they pulled out.. *g*
